Microwaves are great for a lot of things.

If you microwave hot dogs in the buns they come out like how they’re served at ballparks.

Wrap the whole bun/dog in a dry paper towel, burrito style, and hit it for 50 seconds on high (or like 1:10 if you do two at a time) Utterly perfect hot dog every time. This has been my move whenever I'm too lazy to grill for most of my life and it never lets me down.

Do you have to pierce or slice the hotdog so it doesn't pop?

No, it'll split open if you go the full minute in my experience (hence my suggestion of 50sec) but it won't explode or anything.
