Bear with me ladies and gents, this may be a bit long winded, but I promise it will come back around to being relevant to the sub.
I grew up in Cranston, Rhode Island. You haven’t heard of it, or if you have, it’s because in “Dumb and Dumber” Harry says that it where Louise Felcher is from.
I did not know Louise Felcher so I cannot confirm if this is true.
Even “Family Guy” hasn’t mentioned Cranston, and they have a whole ass beer named after Pawtucket. Anyway.
We had a second-run movie theater in town. The Park Cinema. It wasn’t really all that close to Roger Williams Park, which I assume it had been named for, but I digress. For the youngsters, a second-run theater was a cinema that showed movies at a discounted price, in the time between they left the multiplex and arrived on home video.
My mom loved movies and a bargain. We saw a lot of films at the Park Cinema. Plus, she didn’t drive, and it was within walking distance.
I left Rhode Island at 17 in 1993, around the time the Park Cinema started to struggle. I would hear rumblings now and again…at one point they were trying to knock it down and make the land the centerpiece of a multi-use land development. Developers, as always, are the worst.
Decades passed. Eventually they were able to renovate the space into an intimate theater setting. I led my life capriciously, from California to Texas to Kentucky and so on.
And this month, I found myself back in Cranston, Rhode Island, for good, I think.
And Neko Case, my favorite musical artist in the world, is playing my hometown this very month. At the Park Cinema.
I am going to see Neko in the same space where I saw “Poltergeist” in 1983, terrified of that stupid tree. Where I girl I met at the Budlong Pool and I bought tickets to some Disney movie and then snuck into “Friday the 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan”. Where I went on several high school dates with the girl who I ended up with for almost a decade, teenage romance be damned.
Well. If that ain’t some kinda alright.
(Come say hi if you will be at that show)
