GREAT show! Strong cast and of course powerful, innovative, emotional music. The staging was inventive and the venue was intimate.

I’ve been to dozens of Broadway shows and a few in the West End. This is something special— bravo Neko!

A (True) Story

Bear with me ladies and gents, this may be a bit long winded, but I promise it will come back around to being relevant to the sub.

I grew up in Cranston, Rhode Island. You haven’t heard of it, or if you have, it’s because in “Dumb and Dumber” Harry says that it where Louise Felcher is from.
I did not know Louise Felcher so I cannot confirm if this is true.
Even “Family Guy” hasn’t mentioned Cranston, and they have a whole ass beer named after Pawtucket. Anyway.

We had a second-run movie theater in town. The Park Cinema. It wasn’t really all that close to Roger Williams Park, which I assume it had been named for, but I digress. For the youngsters, a second-run theater was a cinema that showed movies at a discounted price, in the time between they left the multiplex and arrived on home video.

My mom loved movies and a bargain. We saw a lot of films at the Park Cinema. Plus, she didn’t drive, and it was within walking distance.

I left Rhode Island at 17 in 1993, around the time the Park Cinema started to struggle. I would hear rumblings now and again…at one point they were trying to knock it down and make the land the centerpiece of a multi-use land development. Developers, as always, are the worst.

Decades passed. Eventually they were able to renovate the space into an intimate theater setting. I led my life capriciously, from California to Texas to Kentucky and so on.

And this month, I found myself back in Cranston, Rhode Island, for good, I think.

And Neko Case, my favorite musical artist in the world, is playing my hometown this very month. At the Park Cinema.

I am going to see Neko in the same space where I saw “Poltergeist” in 1983, terrified of that stupid tree. Where I girl I met at the Budlong Pool and I bought tickets to some Disney movie and then snuck into “Friday the 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan”. Where I went on several high school dates with the girl who I ended up with for almost a decade, teenage romance be damned.
Well. If that ain’t some kinda alright.

(Come say hi if you will be at that show)

Tour Merch

I'm seeing Neko and Destroyer in Moncton coming up in Oct. I'm so excited I could cry but I also want to know, ahead of time, if she's going to have tour merch with her. I have a friend who wants to give me money for merch but, also, for myself I want to prepare.

Should I buy a $170 Tacoma ticket yes or no

Really really have always wanted to see her live! I’m way closer to the west coast so really the only stops that make sense are the Tacoma dates.

Which are sold out but alas there are a handful of tix available via resale…just inflated as hell.

Please vote yes or no below thanks in advance

Taken on this rainy weekend here in L.A. I can’t believe it’s already been 10 years since the release of case/lang/veirs… feels like it’s only been a few years at most!

Lots of us can’t be in London. Let’s rewatch the film in solidarity with the stage production.

I rewatched Thelma and Louise last night and stand in awe of the incredible story, and storytelling.

Thelma & Louise @ The New Vic. Friday Sept 4th

Went to see the play last night, with great excitement. It hadn’t occurred to me that I was about to hear a new Neko Case album until I was walking through the door.

Absolutely loved it and was enraptured for the entire runtime. It was gorgeous and very cleverly staged. There was dialogue from the film and the music absolutely enriched the story it supported while telling another story alongside it. I don’t know how to describe it.

I thought all of the actors were brilliant and they performed those song and dances beautifully.

Big praise goes to the two leads! When the focus was on one or the other, I was convinced they were my favourite performance. Magnificent performances from each of them. I felt each heartbreak and triumph. They also had some pretty savage ‘Neko’ lines to sing which they BOSSED and gods I love her so much for music like that.

Hell yes, I absolutely cried my heart out at the end.

If you can see it, I could not recommend it more.

As a West Coast North American I’m really bummed I can’t make it all the way to London to see this show. I know so many years of work have gone into it. Fingers crossed that it will make it to New York, or somewhere closer!

I think I know who Neko's calling out in the new Substack post

Yes I hate to be "that person", but I think I know who this is about, and I just want to see if anyone else is thinking it too.

Neko's newest Substack is called "IN WHAT FUCKING UNIVERSE?", and it's about how men pretty rarely get comeuppance for sex crimes. It's a deeply personal and disturbing rant, but also super cathartic.

What stood out to me is that the first few paragraphs are about a "shitty, spoiled man being lionized". Said man died recently, and she said that while she knew men would mourn him, she's upset by how many women are sad about his death too. She goes on to write about sexual harassment that this unidentified man committed both to her and women she knew. I'm guessing she didn't share his name because he's recently died, but later in the post she calls out Ryan Adams by name (to the point that I was like, wait, did Ryan Adams die?!)

To cut right to it: I think it's Glen Hansard. I don't know if they ever toured together, but they were in the same genre of music, and both worked on the Hunger Games soundtrack. I hadn't heard anything about sexual assault, but I did just find out (on r/indieheads the day he died) that he met Matketa Irglova when she was 13, and there's ample evidence that he groomed her, given they dated later. The only other musician who died recently (that I know of) is Kavinsky, and afaik he and Neko never crossed paths at all.

Anyways, if you haven't yet, I seriously recommend reading her post. It's sad but needs to be read. The part that hit hardest is when she says that rape is basically legal in the US right now, and...yeah she's not wrong :(

Hey there! Does anyone know if the lyrics for 'An Ice Age' off the liner notes of the Neon Grey Midnight Green vinyl? I have the CD but none of the lyrics. I would greatly appreciate if someone might be able to send a photo! Thanks a ton.
