An unfortunate update on OoT DSi
Hey everyone. I’ve got some really bad news.
My PC ran into some serious problems, and Windows ended up needing to be reinstalled.
Unfortunately, I lost my local OoT DSi project files in the process along with literally ALL of my other projects.
As things stand, I can’t continue development from where I left off. I genuinely don’t know if or when I’ll be able to pick it back up, and I don’t want to make promises I can’t keep.
That being said, I’ll try my absolute best. This is just
going to be extra difficult to finish the project now.
I really appreciate everyone who showed interest in the project, joined the Discord, or followed the progress. Seeing other people genuinely excited about something I was building meant a lot to me.
I’m sorry I don’t have better news.

Digraph DS: a two-screen graph editor and analysis workbench for the Nintendo DS
I’ve been building Digraph DS, a graph editor and analysis workbench for the Nintendo DS and DSi. It grew from the kts-nds foundation, and the engine work developed during Digraph’s creation has since been brought together in Devy, a reusable Rust, Bevy, and BlocksDS runtime.
That engine work goes well beyond the original foundation: Devy brings together framebuffer and layered 2D drawing, hardware 3D, touch input, gestures and strokes, SD-card storage, NitroFS assets, sprites, audio, cooperative tasks, time and RTC support. It also comes with host-side tools for preparing assets and scenes.
Digraph DS puts those capabilities to work as a real graph editor. The two screens have different roles: edit and manipulate your graph on the touchscreen, while viewing analysis results on the other screen. You can create directed and undirected edges, move and delete vertices, set source and target vertices, and pan and zoom around larger graphs.
The app includes 27 graph-analysis algorithms, covering reachability, shortest paths, cycles, topological order, Euler trails, DAG paths and kernels, game-theory analyses, bipartite matching, spanning forests, core numbers, dominators, cuts and disjoint routes, and feedback sets. It also includes component analyses such as weak, strong, and unilateral components; loops; articulation vertices; bridges; and source and sink SCCs.
Results are visual, not just text. Component analyses can show both the original graph and a quotient view across the two screens. You can swap the result view to the touchscreen and explore it independently. Analyses stay active while you return to editing, and the app reports when an algorithm’s requirements aren’t met. DAG transformations can be previewed before you choose to apply them.
Digraph DS supports graphs with up to 200 vertices and 20,000 stored edges. Dense-graph rendering uses caching, clipping, and level of detail to keep interaction responsive; those display shortcuts don’t remove edges from the graph or its analyses. You can also generate complete or random graphs, save named projects to SD or a flashcart, and check runtime and memory statistics in the app.
The current app is v0.5.10. Digraph DS builds as a Nintendo DS ROM. Desktop frame-preview and Android library builds are available as development groundwork; a desktop window and installable Android app are still future work.

I’d love to hear what graph problems you’d explore on a DS, and what you’d like to see next.

How would one go about extracting .bin files?
So I'm trying to essentially mess around with Style Savvy to see if I can mod the Japanese version of some items into the English release, as there are some slight regional differences. However, like 1/4 of the files I'm seeing are .bin files for some reason? A person from around 7 years ago had this same problem, but it was never answered, and the account has since been deleted. From his findings, it looks like the .bin files are like... a mishmash of different file types? Currently I am using Tinke as well, even though I know it is depreciated currently. I am not too well-versed in decompiling nor am I well-versed in Romhacking or hacking in general, so any help I can get from anyone who knows more than me will be much-appreciated!!

Readmanna: use your dsi as a kindle
galleryI’ve been working on Readmanna, a fork of ds-mangaman that turns the DSi into a portable reader for manga, comics, and books. The idea is to make it feel a little like carrying a tiny Kindle in your pocket.
The original ds-mangaman was a great starting point, but its workflow had some limits: processing PDFs could take a long time, and the finished book was bundled into a single ROM. With a book around 300 pages, starting up could take as long as 10 minutes.
Regardless ds-mangaman is a great! homebrew and im glad that the creator made it public.
Readmanna changes that workflow. Convert a PDF or a folder of page images on your computer, then copy the prepared book to your SD card. The reader app and your books are separate, so you keep one Readmanna ROM and can add or change books without rebuilding the app. The finished books are ready to open from the DSi’s book selector.
It also has seven zoom levels, so you can fit a whole page across both screens or zoom in to read smaller text. Rotate pages to read upright or sideways, then pan with the stylus or D-pad. There’s a page selector for jumping ahead, and Readmanna remembers your position, zoom, and rotation for each book.
Also you can go to any page you want by pressing B) showing a menu for going anywhere you want
Rendering is faster because page images are prepared on the computer before they reach the DSi. That lets the reader use prepared images at common zoom levels instead of doing all the resizing itself. There’s also a compact 256-color export option. Depending on the source and export settings, I’ve seen books shrink from around 300 MB to 80 MB.
PDF conversion happens on your computer; the finished books are what you read on the DSi. The project is open source, and I’d love to hear what people think or what features you’d like to see next:

Expanding Age of Empires on Nintendo DS (Age of Kings): Progress, Ideas, and Feedback
I’ve been working on expanding the Nintendo DS version of Age of Empires and wanted to start a thread to share my progress, discuss ideas, and get feedback from other players.
My coding experience is limited, but with some basic knowledge and help from Codex, I’ve been able to turn several ideas into working features. I’m running my builds in DeSmuME and in Delta on iOS.
Here’s what I’ve added so far:
- A fifth player on the Empire map.
- Custom maps, including the Hawaiian Islands and island maps designed for naval battles.
- AI improvements.
- Three ship types: scout, passenger, and battleship, with carrying capacities.
- Enemy intelligence: the ability to purchase information about an opponent’s finances.
- Expanded research options to support the new ships.
I’m currently working on adding a Viking civilization.
I’d love to hear what you think of the additions so far and what you’d like to see next. Any ideas for new civilizations, units, maps, or gameplay features? Feedback and suggestions are welcome!

Help, je peux pas finir la ligue.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Merci

Best DS homebrew excluding emulators?
The DS homebrew scene has been so prominent for so long that the list of homebrew software is endless. I don't know where to start.
I remember sinking a good amount of time into the Colors! app back in the day, which basically turns the DS touchscreen into a drawing tablet. It was a damn near commercial-quality homebrew app.
What are some other must-have, high quality, or simply interesting pieces of software for the DS? Is there a "best of" list anywhere to help narrow things down?
(DS only please, I don't have access to a DSi)

PWC 2010 Rule Check Tools - Closure on a 7 year mystery
Seven years ago I bought a DSi off of eBay that came with a never-before-seen DSi application called "PWC 2010 Rule Check Tool". I quickly posted about it to see if anyone knew anything about it and found out that everyone was just as confused as I was. Feeling it was stupid to hoard something useless, I dumped NAND (though in hindsight maybe I should have held on and traded it for a New 3DS with how much retro gaming costs now). Pretty soon some people in the scene went to work trying to figure out how it worked and I was naturally included despite my lack of experience.
After 3 weeks, we were able to deduce that it was indeed an app intended to check the legality of Pokémon used for tournaments, though no idea why it's label "2010" when Black and White wasn't played until 2011. Through smart effort and dumb luck, we were able to figure out how to get it to boot and dump the results of the rule check for the log viewer to read. After that, we realized we still had now idea how the other files worked or what they did, all we knew was `regulation.cfg` was what was needed to get it to read the cartridge. Eventually interest died down and everyone left to continue their own things.
But not me.
For the next weeks I tried reaching out to different subreddits and forums to see if I could get support or at least answers to some of my questions without spamming. The closest I got was some confirmation that indeed players had to give their cartridges to a judge, but none of them were able to see what they were doing, and a dev from the Pokémon reverse engineering team "pret" telling me on Discord that it seemed interesting, but not really worth the effort at the moment to look into. Eventually I gave up and decided to try and reverse engineer it myself. I found a copy of Ghidra and the ARM9 plugin and went to work using my virtually nonexistent CS skills. The closest I got was figuring out how some of the error codes related to the message it would display, but still I could tell that without those files from the SD card I would never truly know how it worked. After 2 weeks of staring at hex addresses with no idea how to read them and still not much buzz from the people who first started the investigation, I too decided to throw in the towel.
Flash forward to last week. I've now gained more technical knowledge and kept seeing all these posts of AI being used to do cool complex things like adding Skate 3 physics to CoD and GTA or seeing games getting decompiled or recompiled to make PC ports that at the very least boot in-game. That's when it hit me: why don't I ask Claude to take a look at these apps that no one else wanted to spend time doing? Worse that can happen is nothing gets discovered and I'm back to square one, plus they're pretty lightweight compared to asking it to decompile an entire game. I gave it a copy of the decrypted .nds file, a few notes I made_Save_Data_Tools), and what the tournament rules were for both years and told it to figure out what the missing files did and if it could be recovered. It came back with more than I was expecting. Here were some highlights:
- The bit in `regulation.cfg` didn't tell the app to turn on Slot-1 access, but rather it was a list of which country code for the cartridge was acceptable (I only have the USA version, so this is still technically untested)
- `regulation.bin` handles global checks such as allowing duplicate Pokémon, items, level caps, number of Pokémon, and most importantly, the IDs of banned Pokémon and items.
- `rules.prd` is meant to be a copy of every legal move available to each Pokemon and what level are they expected to learn said moves, as well as act as an item whitelist. It also keeps track of which pokemon are shiny-locked and Smeargle's Sketch moves.
- The move Sky Drop was hardcoded in both apps as a banned move, not in the rules.prd. This was due to a glitch with the move Gravity but still interesting to see it was preprogrammed
Of course this all means nothing if you can't prove it on real hardware, so I went and put the files it generated on my SD card on the original DSi it came from and... It worked! For years it would always fail the check on each pokemon saying that it knew a move it didn't know or that it was the wrong level even though my entire party was legally caught in the game with no modification.
It's still not 100% perfect, it doesn't seem like the look up for location data of pokemons is completely accurate when checking to see if it came from an illegal location or if it knew an egg-move but wasn't hatched. It's hard to tell since there's a chance that the PkHex editor I used was sanitizing some of the test cases I was injecting. In any case, I can finally put this mystery to rest.
You can find the files and the detailed investigation report Claude made here:

I hadn’t played my ds in a while but I just heard about modding. I don’t want to permanently mod my DSI so I just bought a modded game card and it worked good for about 2 hours. DSPico QuickReturn: I added a hotkey to return to Pico Loader without rebooting
I’ve released DSPico QuickReturn, a community fork of LNH-team’s Pico Loader that lets you return from a DS game to the Pico menu without power cycling the console.
Hold L + R + Down + Select for about half a second, then choose another game from the menu.
This took a fair amount of trial and error on real hardware. Some builds booted but ignored the hotkey; others froze or produced graphical corruption during the return. The fixes included splitting the return code into smaller pieces to fit fragmented patch memory, correcting alignment issues, and coordinating the ARM7/ARM9 handoff so storage reads happen after card ownership transfers.
I’ve tested it successfully with several games, including returning to the menu and launching another game afterward. That’s encouraging, but I’d like more compatibility feedback from other DSPico users.
Source, downloads, installation instructions, and technical writeup:
https://github.com/VideoGameMore/pico-loader/releases/latest
Video showing installation and the return hotkey working:
https://youtu.be/XmjKz9nq69A
The release includes a full SD-card software package. Huge credit to LNH-team and the original contributors for the open-source foundation.
If you test it, please share the game, your DS model, and whether you could return to the menu and launch another game. Reports of freezes or other issues would be useful too.
