Damn you to hell Steam I will never get those 4.53 seconds back.
118
u/superdavit 15h ago
Yeah, but hey, you do that 10,000 times and over the course of your life, you're looking to save DOZENS of minutes. You hear me! Dozens!
19
u/nhal 12h ago
I mean i know you're joking but if you opened steam 10,000 times (that's, let's say, once a day for 30 years aprox.) you'd spend an additional 31 days and a half waiting for it to open compared to this "New" Epic Launcher.
Not that it matters, I'd rather watch paint dry than open the Epic launcher, but I just found it funny.
23
u/kleptorsfw 10h ago
You messed up your math somewhere. 1 million seconds would be 11 and a half days, 46 thousand is much less. Like 12 hours
11
u/Clusterpuff 15h ago
This was literally a complaint of users initially. Epic store used to be much worse
31
u/levios3114 14h ago
Yeah because it was in combination with way less features now the only thing they have better is a slightly faster start up time
-19
u/Clusterpuff 14h ago
You're saying now they have less features?
16
u/Lord_Oasis 13h ago
The new epic launcher that runs faster doesn’t have social features or account management lmao
4
u/S7YX 11h ago
Even the old Epic launcher, which is much slower, doesn't have reviews, forums, mod support, or a way to sort games into groups, just off the top of my head.
The only reason I still use it is to check if the fee games are interesting.
2
u/Lord_Oasis 9h ago
Yeah, I was referring to the fact that their new launcher doesn’t even have the very few features that the old one did

u/Funambulia 15h ago
Wow, 0,36s rather than 0,42. Wonder what I will do with the free time they vibe give me

That sounds like it was written by the same person working on the White House socials.
This fellow kids trope died the day the WH started using it.

u/Bigtallanddopey 15h ago
Ah yes, it may be slower, but steam rarely forces you to re-download a whole game every time there’s an update.
22
u/FireDefender 13h ago
My steam doesn't even take 10 seconds to start. It takes me 10 seconds to boot up my PC to the login screen. Steam starts in less than 5...
I don't even have enough time to sit down properly before all of it is online lol
38
u/Suds08 14h ago
Epic makes you download the entire game again because of an update? That sounds absurd. Why would that even be a thing?
22
u/Bigtallanddopey 14h ago
I don’t think it’s every game, but I have had it happen more times than I can remember.

... That's not really true, and that's up to the developer. Eg Crimson Desert and Helldivers on steam had that issue for a while.

Why on God's green earth would a company admit it's Store, you know, the place I use my payment method on*, and I sign into with an account containing a certain amount of PII, has been vibe-coded?
edit: *could potentially use. Cause Sweeney ain't getting my money.

The difference? I'll always let steam start with my computer. I'll never let epic do the same.
In other words, steam will always take .42 seconds to show up on my computer, and epic will always take 5.47 seconds.

u/Reality_Evans 14h ago
Is there a category of speed running for opening a launcher that I'm not aware of?
17
u/syn0079 14h ago
GoG Galaxy staying the hell out of this 😂
11
u/Jeremiad-Kain 13h ago
'cuz GoG rules and doesn't need to blackmail people into using it. You don't even need the launcher for their games.
3
u/pudgybunnybry 8h ago
And if you do use their launcher, you can import game libraries and launch from there. I much prefer it to the rest for that feature alone, even if it loads slower.
5
u/Donmiggy143 7h ago
Do people open and close the program alot? It's such a weird selling point to me. Steam is just open. But even if you don't have it open, or you manually open it after startup, it's not a long time? I don't know, Epic blows and basically all I use it for is opening Alan Wake 2. That's only because I have to.
2
u/TheDisappointedFrog 5h ago
Challenge: don't fall to obvious ragebait marketing
Difficulty: impossible
You perpetuated the cycle, congrats! I just logged in, and now I have seen this idiocy too. This isn't murder, even, this is just an obvious reaction they were trying to get from you from the start. You're being farmed. Don't feed the trolls.

u/DrMaxwellEdison 12h ago
Why the fuck would I care how fast the app loads from the system tray?
Does it play a game?
2
u/Rushes_End 7h ago
Don’t care. There’s nothing there I wanna play. None of my friends are on epic longer than it is to click the free game. I don’t buy games on epic,
A few times playing the free game on epic and then buying it on Steam so I can play with my friends.
1
u/angrytomato98 4h ago
Okay cool, still just gonna keep taking the free games and not buying anything…

Please let steam release a performance update with, "We don't need AI to be better than you."
1
u/Woooshifyourmomgay 13h ago
Hey man, they showed more features other than this!
What? What do you mean Steam already had them? What do you mean it still has more QoL and customer-centered features?
1
u/JuliusSeizure2753 9h ago
Making that 4.5 second time advantage the main selling point is idiotic. Most people open steam a couple of times at most and I highly doubt that anyone looses more than a minute a day on steam startup times so nobody cares that they can start their games a few seconds quicker
1
u/askyidroppedthesoap 9h ago
My game purchases are as follows:
Steam: 695 titles
Epic: 8 titles
...that's not a coincidence, when it comes to those unique, weird and/retro indie games? Steam's got 'em and im such a sucker for 'em too lol. Comparing steam to epic is like comparing the selection between the local 7-11 and Mall Of America...

Shitty company, i aint playing or Even installing that launcher ever
They killed GTA online, they killed dbd, and they killed Star wars bf2
I don't know what tf they were thinking when they gave away those games, i was playing the 3 of them and they all filled with hackers to the brim, people could claim the Game on 30 accounts and hack tf out of 29 of them and still have a copy for themselves
Dbd was imposible to play, bf2 literally died And GTA You had to play on a prívate server because of You entered any public lobby You got instantly sent to a Cage or teleported to mars because of some dipshit doing epic games work

Some one tries to co.mare a real store vs a trash bin
I will go for the store, but the only store in this post is Steam, who the fuck would touch that malware epic shit store?
-11
u/Mr_K_2u 15h ago
Why is everyone hating on epic? I don’t use it to buy anything but love getting free games.
12
u/hoxto 15h ago
Vibe coded AI slop that you will collect free games but never play
-11
u/Glum-Objective3328 14h ago
There’s a game called Fortnite a bunch of people play
5
u/hoxto 14h ago
Weird that they put such a popular game on my free game app.
-4
u/Glum-Objective3328 14h ago
Yea they can do that and put it on their launcher, and improve their launcher if they want. I don’t really understand why people are complaining, aren’t these all good?
4
u/hoxto 14h ago
This is vibe coded AI slop that does little to nothing
-4
u/Glum-Objective3328 14h ago
It made the launcher faster. That’s a good figure of merit for code quality. Of course not everything, but what do you mean it did nothing? It made the launcher faster.
3
u/The_Salacious_Zaand 13h ago
Oh boy, a bunch of shit code that no one knows how it works made a shit launcher that no one wants to use a little faster! Where do I sign up?
-2
u/Glum-Objective3328 13h ago
I mean, it’s just not that deep is all. The launcher is better. Don’t use it, the lord knows I never use Epic Games launcher.
1
u/Dagordae 12h ago
The issue I have is that vibe coding is TERRIBLE for security.

They do some anti-consumer things like get exclusivity on certain games for 6 months. Unfortunately for them one of those was Borderlands 3 so no one missed it.
I’m with you though, they give a ton of great AAA and Indy games away. I don’t get how their budget allows for it or what their end game is. I know people say it’s to get people to download the client and possibly use their store… but a far more effective way to do that is just have insane deals instead. Like have a AAA game for $5 once a month.
I will say I find it comical how people are anti-monopolies but insist on having ALL of their games on Steam. Gabe is one heartbeat away from Steam changing hands.
5
u/Phemus01 14h ago
Their budget doesn’t. The store has never been profitable and they keep shifting the date it will be
They’re basically investing Fortnite money into this to try and buy themselves a market share before Fortnite dies
1
u/ShawnyMcKnight 14h ago
I’m wondering if there is something super deep in the Eula that says they can pull the games whenever if they give up on the store and I should be playing the games now.
2
u/Grunt636 12h ago
Every store has it in their EULA that you are just renting a license to play that can be revoked at any time for any reason so as soon as any of these digital stores pulls the plug the hard earned money you spent goes bye bye.
The only exception is probably GOG where you could download DRM free launchers beforehand to play if it ever dies.
4
u/Dagordae 12h ago
They pulled a lot of anti-consumer crap when they first tried to supplant Steam. Their CEO is… Let’s say he’s got issues.
. And despite the huge push they made their platform is shockingly shit, missing basic features and whatnot for a bizarrely long time.

Any moron who belittles, insults or downright wants them to go bankrupt of an alternative to something THEY DONT EVEN HAVE TO USE OR CONSUME and in no way, shape or form affected by it is a moron. This includes 99.99999% of steam fanboys, 99.9999999% of console fanboys.
1
u/Spartan_117_YJR 1h ago
They compromised my card so I hope they go bankrupt for their complete disregard for customer data
1
u/HikerRemastered 1h ago
You hold every company ever to the same standards or only when you’ve been personally afflicted?
There’s no right or wrong answer I’m just curious
1
u/Spartan_117_YJR 29m ago
Personal experience adds on an extra layer. Contacted customer support from Epic questioning how and why was my card leaked, essentially got blamed for using a card to buy things digitally. What else am I supposed to use to buy shit online? Paypal? Fucknuts at epic.

I feel like I'm more hung up on the question of why would a company ever advertise themselves with the words "vibe coded?"
No one is impressed by it and a huge chunk of the population will have a visceral reaction to that phrase.
