u/savois-faire 3d ago
It's the 6000 workers being laid off. That is a bad thing, and therefore it is socialism. Anything bad is socialism, that's how you know socialism must be bad.
Don't worry about why or how it is supposed to be socialism, or what socialism actually is in the first place, just know that it's bad and it's socialism, because bad things are socialism, that's how you know socialism is obviously bad.

They’re just classifications that help to predict things. It’s not just in politics. If an animal mostly eats meat then we call them a carnivor. If a someone flies all around the globe for social events, we might call them a jet-setter. If someone follows a band around the country trying to get close to the singer then we call them a groupie.
If someone voices supports for left-leaning social programs, bigger government oversight, civil rights protections, social justice, and environmentalism then we probably classify them as a liberal. At least that’s the modern agreed-upon interpretation of the classification.
Nobody is dying for labels. We just understand that words have definitions.

u/delicious_fanta 3d ago
Jesus. Socialism is an economic model of government. It is nothing more and nothing less. It will not automatically give everyone puppies and rainbows. It is just as susceptible to corruption and abuse as anything else.
Mamdani and the DSA keep making people think it’s more than it is and that is doing a disservice to this country and their own goals of improving things.
What Mamdani has done is wonderful, and it is because HE has made good choices, is not corrupt, and has literally NOTHING to do with socialism.
If you put corrupt leaders in a socialist context, just as bad things will happen to the people as are happening currently under unrestrained capitalism.
The whole reason we have unrestrained capitalism, instead of using the positive aspects of capitalism and regulating its wildly harmful effects, is because we have terrible people in powerful position of government.
That same thing would happen under socialism when education isn’t respected and corruption is allowed, like it is in the united states today.
What you are seeing in the world right now in “socialist” European countries, which are not remotely “socialist” nor are they “democratically socialist” btw as their governments do not actually own private industry, is that they are “social democracies” which are STILL capitalist, free market economies, they just have a higher level of education, better leaders, less corruption, and therefore have regulations on said capitalism to provide for the good of the people.
So the term “socialist” simply does not apply to any of these nations. Please, please stop using that word wrong.
This is how they provide single payer healthcare, government mandated vacation days, regulations on worker employment, etc.
THAT is what we actually need, and everyone keeps calling it “socialism” or “democratic socialism” WHICH IT MOST CERTAINLY IS NOT.
Please use words and understand problems correctly or nothing will be improved.

Socialism doesn't mean "free stuff" except to regressive pigs, Nancy. To the rest of us, they mean social policies that help citizens not corporations.
6
u/Jellodyne 3d ago
I pay taxes, there's no free stuff. It's just cheaper to pool our money and buy things like roads, schools, police, fire departments, food safety inspectors, etc. The rest of the civilized world has proved that's also true of healthcare. The poorest people might get some free stuff, but most of us just get in on a good money saving group buy.
4
u/ForensicPathology 3d ago
They say it means free stuff and then turn around and promise 5000 dollars if you vote for them.
-13
u/Anthaenopraxia 3d ago
they mean social policies that help citizens not corporations.
Well that's not what socialism is either.
9
u/senturon 3d ago
Democratic socialism has become socialism in current vernacular, words have meaning until they are beaten into submission by another meaning.
3
u/Anthaenopraxia 3d ago
Democratic socialism means whatever you personally think it means. There is no broad consensus on its definition which makes it a pretty useless term. Socialism and capitalism have well-defined meanings even though the yanks are trying to redefine and muddle everything. They do this so people can't discuss politics and economics anymore, by stripping away the very language the people use. Makes it easier to control the masses, it's like newspeak from 1984.
I protest changing the definitions of technical words. Better to make new ones that better describe what you're talking about. Democratic socialism is an attempt at this, but it's an American attempt so it'll never work.
20
u/Galle_ 3d ago
"Socialism" just means whatever I happen to not like at the moment.
0
u/quick20minadventure 3d ago
And on other side, it just means whatever i like.
I once got downvotes because I quoted wikipedia saying social ownership of means of production is a characteristic feature of socialism. Like, banning private businesses has always been core part of all socialist ideologies.
But now no one cares what words means.
3
u/ARERTSIGER 3d ago
It really does feel like the term has been butchered. People just seem to say that socialism is just better conditions for workers and free healthcare. Your point is great though, the right uses it in the completely opposite way.
1
u/quick20minadventure 3d ago
It's been butchered by both sides. Mamdani's fans often suffer from this.
Like, he removed permit requirement for icecream and other vendors. I've seen it called socialist, when it's a capitalist deregulation move. You are literally removing regulation to help private businesses.
Then they'd say rent freeze is socialist, except it is regulatory move on private landlords. Or taxing 2nd property, or getting delivery workers to get paid or help them unionize. Worker protection from private businesses is part of regulating capitalism/labour market.
Actually socialist move in NYC is their social housing program. And it's been ongoing for almost a century. Govt builds and gives houses for rent.
In general, population no longer has ability to understand which policy goes in which bucket.
Everything goes in square hole.
→ More replies (1)1
u/ARERTSIGER 3d ago
Yeah the ice cream thing is so farm from socialism. I definitely agree with you on the other points too, his policies have definitely been a mix of ideologies.
I think running on policy has become outdated, I mean a lot of Bidens policies were popular on paper. But people make it sound like he was just an inefficient devil or something. On both sides too.
1
u/LurkerInSpace 3d ago
Like, banning private businesses has always been core part of all socialist ideologies.
It's a bit more nuanced than that - a co-operative, for example, is a private business but is also owned by its employees. More co-operativist tendencies within socialism would aim to make co-ops the prevailing mode of business, replacing the joint stock companies that currently prevail (which themselves replaced family-run firms due to things like estate taxes and inheritance laws).
1
u/quick20minadventure 3d ago
There's definitely nuance there. But also a lot of word salad.
Co operatives are more worker oriented, but they already exist. Question is how exactly are you going to force more companies to turn co op?
By banning or capping typical private ownership? Then you're back to the same point.
My point is that we already have mixed economy in basically all countries. Govt already socializes and takes over many many sectors, or at least has a presence in it. Co ops or other worker owner stuff are already allowed. But, socialism in all its various flavour ask to remove or reduce private ownership of businesses one way or the other. And general public do not give a shit want of that.
They decide what policy they like or don't like and everything in that bucket is socialism/capitalism depending on which side you want to be on.
Or worse... Blindly follow their favourite politician.
1
u/LurkerInSpace 3d ago
It doesn't need to be as direct as a ban. For example, in the last 30 years there has been a shift from public joint stock companies to private companies, particularly in the tech sector. Why? Because the reporting requirements for private companies changed so the number of investors needed to force public reporting increased from 500 to 2000 (and employees who go stock as compensation are no longer counted as investors).
Changes in the incentives behind structures pushes businesses in particular directions - usually accidentally.
I would broadly agree that the general public are a lot less interested in the "means of production" element than in the past though - hence why many modern "socialists" don't really pay it as much heed as one might expect. In some cases they even argue against greater public ownership of the economy - they balk at the idea of investing Social Security in shares, for example.
1
u/quick20minadventure 3d ago
Then you're just regulating businesses and share market like all mixed economies. Some critical sectors are owned by govt, some have govt presence and some are entirely private.
Everyone knows american lobbying structure has made its economy woefully unregulated, but regulation of business has never meant socialism.
And that's my point. If you're just going to deliberately be confusing and use random words, then don't need surprised when people get confused or act cautious.
1
u/Galle_ 3d ago
I'm willing to excuse the other side because they don't misuse the word maliciously the way the far right does. American progressives aren't trying to convince anyone that public health care is the same thing as gulags.
-3
u/quick20minadventure 3d ago
Progressives are speaking things they don't understand. They look up to Europe and Scandinavian countries, and none of them are trying to ban private businesses. They are all trying to regulate them.
They are championing policies that put a lot of businesses and sectors under control of govt, and they don't realize last 5-10 years have proven that govt controlled entites are way too prone to political interference. They have blinded themselves to not see any benefits of capitalism.
On one hand, everyone is asking for more jobs. And at the same time creating jobs by starting business is disincentivised? And workers are in no hurry to start their own worker-owned business.
1
u/Galle_ 3d ago
They look up to Europe and Scandinavian countries, and none of them are trying to ban private businesses.
Right. So progressives are wrong when they call themselves socialists. So what?
0
u/quick20minadventure 3d ago
Well, you are the one pointed out wrong uses of the word 'socialism' in the first place.

None of these definitions are hard, either!
Capitalism is when those with capital control the means of production and hire laborers to work the means of production they own.
Socialism is when those who labor democratically own and control the means of production.
Socialism isn't "when the government does stuff", and capitalism isn't "supply and demand set the prices of goods" (that's a free market).
The capital class uses marketing tricks to obscure ALL of these definitions, so that way we can't reasonably talk about how to make our workplaces more democratic; which would be a more mixed economy from the shareholder supremacy we live under now.
3
2
u/makemisteaks 3d ago edited 3d ago
You’re arguing about something they’re doing on purpose. They’re not stupid. They know that if they brand anything as socialism, the base will hate it and blame a democrat. That simple.
2
u/fadingsignal 3d ago
Nobody knows anything anymore. They just say things and make themselves angry.
1
u/guyver_dio 3d ago
I get confused by what it means for those who labor own and control the means of production.
Don't they do that via a government? The government represents the people and the government own and control the means of production.
So say a nationalized supermarket would be one owned and controlled by the government and that's an example of a socialist form of production isn't it?
7
u/CBud 3d ago
I personally don't believe the government is actually representing labor at this point, so no, I don't believe state socialism is socialism. If a government structure that actually represented the people instead of capital existed, then I could see a case for it.
Worker owned coops are a thing that exist and are much closer to democracy in the workplace than what we have now. I've been socializing four policies that I believe would result in more direct labor ownership of the means of production:
- Tax labor less than earnings off investments
- Mandate favorable bank lending laws for worker owned co-ops
- Allow workers right of first refusal to form a co-op and take ownership of a company in cases of bankruptcy
- Mandate half of all corporate executives of publicly traded companies are democratically elected by the people
If America really believes I'm democracy, we shouldn't just have it in our government, but we should have democracy in publicly traded companies, too.
2
u/whyd_I_laugh_at_that 3d ago
That’s communism. Socialism the workers own the companies, while social programs are run by the government. Communism the government owns the means of production and is supposed to run everything for the good of the people.
2
u/guyver_dio 3d ago
I thought one part of communism was that it was stateless (meaning no government)?
6
u/whyd_I_laugh_at_that 3d ago
Theoretically that is the final outcome, ut in essence it’s because the “government” itself doesn’t exist because the people operate the same with or without it, which only occurs after society reaches perfect balance.
It’s the reason true communism will never succeed in the real world, because human nature means there will always be some people that want control, and they will inevitably seek power when it is most concentrated before that equality is achieved.
-2
u/JordoIsYourComrade 3d ago
This is a hilariously incoherent and incorrect definition and explanation of communism.
-1
u/oOZeenOo 3d ago
So I'm not sure what some of the other comments that responded to your question are trying to say but would government run supermarkets fall under the economic/political philosophy of socialism? I think you are correct and definitionally it would as the government is generally defined as a representative structure for the peoples in a society and they would be the ones who owned the land, buildings, product, and other capital required to make the business function.
The difference in these systems is who is ultimately -allowed- to hold the ownership. In a capitalist society, anyone with the means to gain access to that capital can. In a socialist society, no individual would be allowed to. Also in a socialist society, no person would be able to hire another person as that is what "exploiting "labor" means in the political/economic philosophy discussing these terms.

It's not free stuff when we paid for it. This country was set up on no taxation without representation. FDR taxed the billionaires, built a middle class, built a safety net. Instead of giving out money, he gave out jobs. Those people built the infrastructure that was neglected for decades and decades. Our taxes haven't been building infrastructure. They haven't been given us taxpayers any help with a rising cost of everything: healthcare, school, etc. imagine how much extra money we would have if we didn't have to worry about those things.
Reminder in the last 50 years they done everything they could to make these things more and more expensive. Insurance used to be non-profit. State colleges used to be free. We didn't do this, they did... They get bailouts, we don't.

It's abusive towards them and the American worker. I'm all for a level playing field. I can compete with them. They often cheat and lie about their work. I don't.

The problem is that workers are forced to compete to survive. We should be coordinating to survive instead.
There's nothing inherently wrong with competition so long as it isn't the sole determining factor in a person's worth, nor tied to their security and dignity as a human being. People should not be forced and stressed into destitute just to maintain capitalism. It was a nice step in human economic evolution, but it's time it followed our social evolution into democracy.
