Mitch McConnell was missing for three months, and MAGA barely made a peep. James Talarico gets the flu and stays home, and MAGA is losing their fucking minds.

u/BigCballer 4d ago
Talarico is Diabetic from what I've heard, meaning he REALLY gets sick when he has the flu.
But these people don't care about that.

u/Sarasha 4d ago
A lot of people don't realize that diabetic doesn't just mean low sugar or high sugar. It lowers your immune system. Also makes you more susceptible to nerve damage in your feet and sometimes hands. Carpal tunnel syndrome comes up more likely. These are things that have to be monitored.

u/Shark7996 4d ago
I wish we had a more comprehensive education system for understanding the full experience of what people with different disabilities and diseases go through. Have a local adult with diabetes come in, share their experiences, help everyone become a little more understanding. Would be great for elementary school I think.
28
u/Sarasha 4d ago
Thank you, I wish so too. I have epilepsy. Sometimes my words get mixed up while writing. It messes with my grammar. I try to fix it but I don't always catch it.
20
u/Shark7996 4d ago
"Invisible" disabilities are hard. Be kind to yourself and share your experiences when possible. I'm very open about my AuDHD partially to raise awareness, but also because people just have no idea what it entails, and it helps them help you when they better understand.

Even doctors don't bother telling you about what they diagnose you with most of the time, you have to go looking for the information yourself and hope what you find is accurate. My current doctor is better than most, he straight up doesn't have time to do in depth explanations so he tells me where to find more info. I've been to see multiple diabetic specialists through the years and none of them explained much about it, and those appointments were literally about telling me the nitty gritty about diabetes, what I've learned has been small bits and pieces from small comments from multiple doctors, most of them not even the endocrinologists, through the years.

Talarico has type 1 diabetes. It used to be called 'juvenile diabetes.' It's not type 2, which can be prevented with diet and exercise and usually only shows up in older people. Type 1 isn't really preventable.
90% of diabetics are type 2.
→ More replies (1)17
u/Deep_Charge_7749 4d ago
I have type 2 and I'm an avid athlete it is not prevented by exercise and diet might happen because of an infection
15
u/ReadontheCrapper 4d ago
You are correct. Thereās a lot of reasons that someone can develop Type 2 diabetes. For me, itās because I have PMOS (formally called PCOS), which is a hormonal/endocrine condition which impacts 1 in 8 women, or more than 170 million women worldwide.
6
u/LaurenMille 4d ago
1 in 8 women, or more than 170 million women worldwide.
These have to be two different statistics, I assume?
Because those aren't the same numbers when normalized.
2
u/ReadontheCrapper 4d ago
Maybe? This is where I got the numbers (because I had to yet again look up the new acronym and a better description⦠Iāve only lived with it for 40 years⦠yeesh)
3
u/LaurenMille 4d ago
The reason I asked is because 1 in 8 women is 506 million women, substantially more than 170 million.
So I assumed it was two different groups.

The exact cause of type 2 diabetes in athletes (without infection, diagnosed hormonal conditions, or any other issue) is apparently somewhat of a mystery still and an active area of research. You've led me down a very interesting rabbit hole!

Since I've become diabetic I've developed trigger finger in my right middle finger and left thumb. Fixable, but annoying and painful.
5
u/Sarasha 4d ago
My husband has that. Not sure what really can help. All we can do is keep track of symptoms and talk about them. Make people aware that they are there.
8
u/dplans455 4d ago
Nothing can really "help" with trigger finger except surgery to fix it. They tried a cortisone shot the first time it happened with my right middle finger. That did nothing and actually made it hurt worse. It won't heal itself on its own either.
The surgery was pretty painless. It was the healing period that annoyed me because it was a lot slower than what the doctor had told me. Maybe that's because I am diabetic and heal slower but he knows I am diabetic so should have taken that into account when he told me the healing process.
It took about a year each time to regain full motion of the finger again. But since then, I've had no issues with either of those fingers. But being diabetic, I will most likely experience trigger finger in other fingers as I get older. The surgery though is a permanent fix. They say it's extremely rare to have trigger finger again in the same finger.
2
u/sunflwryankee 4d ago
So it sounds exactly like dupuytrens. Iāve got the foot version of this - no diabetes tho. I had no idea diabetes could cause this.
5
u/dplans455 4d ago
Dupuytrens is a tissue issue and trigger finger is a tendon issue. They might have similar effects on the fingers but the causes are different.
2
u/sunflwryankee 4d ago
Ah!! TIL. I always thought Duouytrens was an issue with tendons due to people growing ācordsā. After 6-7 surgeries I developed a fibroma along the tendon that runs throughout the foot. š¤·š»āāļø

Hi, my wife is diabetic and when she gets really sick its bad.
We all know about diabetics and sugars, but not like the in depth thing. When your really sick, with vomiting, diarrhea etc it also means that your body isn't properly regulating its nutritional intake, which gets really fucked up when your also trying to manage your insulin. So it can quickly compound with the illness symptoms and make things much much worse.

Not influenza. That can knock you down for weeks
35
u/VoidOmatic 4d ago
I had type A waaaaay back in my early 20s. I was down for a month. I'd wake up read a chapter of The Dark Elf trilogy, yank the dried mucus out of my eyes and throat and then pass out again for another 8 hours. Never again.

u/miniliedn 4d ago
Had influenza last year. Ran a fever up to 40 degree C (104 F), was weak af. Visited my GP after I was free of fever because I felt short of breath and dizzy (was afraid there was something wrong with my lungs). She told me that real recovery will take 2-4 weeks and that my BP was still really, really low (58 / 104). She was right. And I'm middle aged and healthy.
8
u/stompinstinker 4d ago
This right here. People call bad colds the flu, but actual real-deal influenza is brutal and will knock you down for weeks potentially. You donāt even need any preexisting conditions, health nuts with tiger blood still get their ass kicked.
46
u/Dragonfly_pin 4d ago

People call colds āfluā all the time.
Real flu will have you basically unconscious in bed for a couple of weeks at least. Youāre lucky if you get through it without fever hallucinations and vomiting.

If the average reported illness is around 10 days, many people had it for a few days longer than that (and shorter than that).

u/mister_spacecat 4d ago
Jfc, you dimwits have all the world's knowledge on a device in your pocket, and you still can't be bothered to do basic fact-checking or research.
There are 3 types of flu that affect humans. Influenza C is mild, with symptoms lasting 3-7 days. Influenza B is more serious, with symptoms lasting up to 10 days and fatigue for a week afterwards.
Influenza A will knock you on your ass. Peak at 4 days, symptoms for 7 more days after that, then post-inflammatory fatigue and a dry cough for 1 to 2 weeks. Or longer. This is in healthy individuals.
5
u/_austinight_ 4d ago
Real flu would make you sick longer than that and 4 days of isolation only means that you're then super spreading it to everyone around you right as you are most contagious

⢠John McCain: about 8 months, December 2017 until August 2018,
⢠Walter Jones: about 5 months, September 2018 until February 2019
⢠Steve Scalise: about 3.5 months in 2017; over a month in early 2024 for
⢠Thad Cochran: about a month in fall 2017
⢠Johnny Isakson: several weeks in early 2017
⢠Dan Crenshaw: about a month in April 2021

a book which calls for the effective extermination of "leftists," a group which is vaguely defined to include virtually all liberal positions.
It explicitly dehumanizes "leftists," (see: the books literal title) praises dictators like Pinochet, including directly referencing his throwing political opponents out of helicopters.
Dehumanizing targeted demographics is widely regarded by experts as one of the most important precursors to accepting political violence and genocide against that demographic.
Oh also JD Vance endorsed this book.

Shead has cracked the code, folks. The American Dream used to be āwork hard and invent something.ā Thatās adorable. Very 1950s. Today itās āsurgically remove your conscience and find a fresh batch of MAGA marks to fleece.ā
The startup ideas practically write themselves. Bubblegum-flavored beef tallow, because nothing says āfreedomā like a lard lollipop. Raw ferret milk, unpasteurized, unregulated, and shipped straight from the ferretās own hardened bunker. And for the true believers, giant Depends-style diapers worn proudly in solidarity with their leaderās (and their own) incontinence. Call it Adult Undergarments for a Stronger America. Comes in red. Republicans donāt care about hypocrisy or lying or disseminating completely fabricated disinformation. Itās the part of the absolute worst, bottom of the barrel cockroaches the human species has ever produced.
Why do we keep promoting these absolute human haters? Why do we love to make psychopaths and sociopaths our leaders? Because they make promises they will never keep, only to destroy and cheat the rest of us? Elon Musk has now proved heās a soulless murderer by dismantling USAID. Why do people keep championing him?
Humanity needs to grow up or we will end ourselves. In Star Trek it took WWIII to get to that future. It looks like we are headed in that direction, though ending up with a future that hopeful and mature to have global cooperation seems a bridge too far for humanity to envision.
