Hey, everyone. I finished Monster around 2-3 months ago. I don’t see much discussion about the ending on this subreddit, so I just wanted to talk about it.
I mainly have 2 reasons for heavily disliking the ending. The first being:
1)I feel like they left the true origin of Johan’s monster to be too ambiguous. What is Johan’s monster? Did it come to be with him at birth because of the manipulation of breeding by the government? Or was it because of Franz Bonaparta’s actions? Or was it birthed when Johan saw that his mother couldn’t tell him apart from his sister, and felt that he and her were the same? The whole show built so much tension around the finale, so the answer to Johan’s monster felt rather underwhelming.
2) I don’t like how Johan was just allowed to walk away. Look at his kill count. All the middle aged couples across Germany, The Lieberts, Junkers and his accomplices, The Fortners and Mr Maurer, all the people from 511 Kinderheim, Richard Braun, the whole darn town of Ruhenheim, etc etc. And I bet there are so so many more, as I said before it’s been a while since I watched the show. He’s taken many lives and shattered so many others completely. And after that, he walks? We just forget about all the people who suffered in his wake, and focus on his joyous rehab? I really disliked this part.
Monster was genuinely a 10/10 for me before the ending, the character development, the action scenes and especially the choreography were top notch. But the ending brought it down to a 7.5/10 for me personally.
