Hi everyone,
I'm in a bit of a dilemma and would appreciate some advice, especially from current PhD students or graduates in Australia.
I recently received fully funded PhD offers from Monash and UOW. My wife also received a fully funded PhD offer from UOW, which she has already accepted due to our complicated visa situation (we've been waiting around 13 months).
My background is in engineering and AI (both bachelor's and master's). At Monash, my PhD would be in the Psychology department, with research somewhat related to AI. At UOW, the research focuses directly on AI and drones, which aligns much better with my background.
Personally, I've always wanted to study at Monash because of its reputation and ranking. The stipend is also significantly higher. However, choosing Monash would mean living separately from my wife for potentially 3–4 years, paying rent in two cities, and having higher overall expenses.
If I choose UOW, we can live together, share expenses, and I'll be working on research that is more directly related to AI. Wollongong is also close to Sydney, which could be useful for future industry opportunities.
I've spoken to a few people, and opinions are divided. Some say Monash's reputation would be better for my future, while others say research alignment and personal circumstances matter much more during a PhD.
I'm worried that turning down Monash might be something I regret later, but I'm equally concerned about the financial and personal challenges of living apart.
For those familiar with Australian universities and the AI job market, how much does university ranking actually matter for PhD graduates? Would you choose UOW in my situation?
Thanks!
