Information Independent nonpartisan voting guides for 2026

Hello /r/Modesto,

Ballots have been mailed, you should see yours in the mail soon.

Please take the time to review your voting guide and take the time to fill out and turn in your ballot.

For a voting guide overview, please see CalMatters 2026 Voter Guide here: https://calmatters.org/california-voter-guide-2026/

Take a few minutes to review the propositions, see who supports each side and why, then make an informed decision. The CalMatters site above has a little quiz that can help you make sense of the props if needed.

For local races (and another nonpartisan general guide to statewide races and props) see Modesto Bee's Voter Guide here: https://www.modbee.com/news/politics-government/election/voter-guide/article317493442.html#county-stanislaus

Remember that local races have a much larger effect on you and your community than the bombastic federal races. Take care to vote with intent in local races!

Voting is a civic duty to our community and country. If I could have my way, I'd make voting mandatory and make election day a federal holiday, but I digress.

See you all early November for the results.

Promote your local business here! Updated Monthly

Hey everyone! We've recently tightened the rules a little bit about business promotion posts. We understand however that this is indeed a city subreddit and it would be mutually beneficial for local businesses and consumers to connect! Some promotions such as events are exempt from the tightened rules and may have their own thread. Please read rules 5 and 6. This is for business promotion and NOT a listing for goods for sale.

We still DO NOT allow private listings (including the sale of pets). Please keep those to places such as Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. But if you're something of a realtor, a landscaper, handyman or private music instructor for example, feel free to promote your business or services. For now this is scheduled to post monthly, however the schedule may change depending on activity.

Note to consumers! Please exercise your due diligence. Make sure you're doing business with all properly licensed individuals/businesses. Research reviews and request referrals if you must!

I’m making a commitment

Please use iceinmyarea.org to report ICE, and post here. I’m committing to show up and help keep them out of Modesto and surrounding cities. I implore you to do the same. We need to show up for our community. We need to control immigration through the legal system and due process, not by allowing masked shitheads to harass hard working people just because they’re brown.

And please vote.

Virginia Corridor Creepy Guy

I normally run pretty late at night because it works with my work schedule and long commute. That unfortunately ends tonight. I’ve had some sketchy(ish) situations before but nothing where i felt threatened or truly unsafe. Tonight, i ran past a dude (who was seemingly homeless, but idk) who tried to ask me for something. Obviously, it’s dark and i’m a woman— I say no regardless of who or what is being asked if it’s dark at night and i’m running or getting gas. That’s just a hard line for me. so, i say no (firmly). I kept running, dude turns around and jogs past me, but then slows down just enough so he’s right in front of me. I stop completely and just wait. He immediately stops and pretends like he’s adjusting his pants for a solid 10 seconds. I start running again, and he immediately starts running again right behind me. I turn around and snap “knock it the **** off”. He pretty much stops, slows down but keeps walking in the same direction i’m running. I cut my run short and sprint home, looking over my shoulder the entire time. No more night time runs for me. Any ladies out there running that path, keep an eye out and carry pepper spray or something. i can’t say what his intentions were and maybe i’m just being crazy, but be cognizant and keep something on you just in case.

Any reccomendations for good ribs?

I don't think we have a lot of good bbq spots in town, or if we do I don't know of them. Anyone have a good spot for ribs? I rarely eat them but have been craving them lately. The best bbq spot I last ate at was big vics in turlock. Their brisket was good, the tri-tip was a little on the dry side, but with some sauce it was ok. And their sides were good as well.

Spookfest

I’ve been seeing soooo many ads for Spookfest in Modesto. Does anyone know which bars it includes? How far down the street will be closed off. If I am planning to go out that night in Modesto, is it better to just buy a ticket??

Thoughts on recalling Chris Ricci?

I am really tired of his ai heavy posts on social media so I drafted this up:
I have serious concerns regarding Councilmember Chris Ricci’s judgment in proposing projects that we believe could expose the City of Modesto to excessive financial obligations and unnecessary risks to its long-term fiscal stability.

I believe these proposals threaten to divert taxpayer resources from essential municipal services, infrastructure maintenance, and other community priorities.

I am particularly concerned that committing public funds to financially unsustainable projects could increase the city’s debt burden and, under sufficiently adverse circumstances, contribute to a risk of municipal insolvency.

I also believe Councilmember Ricci has demonstrated a disconnect from the needs, concerns, and priorities of the constituents he was elected to represent. In our view, his approach to major spending decisions does not adequately reflect the financial interests of District 3 residents.

Anyone know where to find Godzilla trading cards in town?

So far the only place I’ve found them in town is at the Collectible shop in the mall. I just tried Simply Unlucky but they don’t have any there. I know it’s a really small niche in the card community, but it would be rad to find another spot in town for them.

Behold, a Modesto light rail concept

Because why not?

I am a major YIMBY advocate (among other things) from Missouri who just moved to Modesto to be with family, so I felt like giving my new home a little love.

Here is my little light rail concept, which I am dubbing the Modesto Trolley. My initial intention was to add rail along major streets in Modesto, specifically McHenry Ave. The red line shown was my initial concept, running down from McHenry north of Sylvan/Standiford, to a loop downtown on J and H streets, past the future HSR/ACE station and down H/Paradise into West Modesto stopping just before Wade. The Blue line is my first addition to this concept, running from Vintage Fair, down past the MJC campuses on 9th Ave, past the aforementioned HSR/ACE station, all the way to North Ceres, stopping past Mitchell along Hatch.

Most of this runs along existing roads so it will be much cheaper compared to dedicated right-of-way, although some parts have their own right-of-way, mostly along the blue line in particular. Most expensive part will certainly be a tunnel under the 99 at Briggsmore/Carpenter, running from the Carpenter/MJC West station all the way to Prescott, where the train will emerge in the median. Another challenge will be a viaduct in Ceres, where the trolley would run high above the 99 connecting the southern end of 9th to Hatch. The tunnel and viaduct would be necessary to avoid complicating existing traffic at the Briggsmore/Carpenter and Hatch interchanges respectively.

This was made assuming signal priority would be implemented (which is a must for any rail line sharing right-of-way with cars).

And here is the Google Earth project for you to look at:

Help! STOLEN BIKE!

Post image
41 Upvotes

My bike was stolen off of campus at MJC west. I know the odds of me getting it back are low but if ya'll could keep an eye out for me and just let me know if you spot it. I already filed a report both with campus security and Modesto pd. It has been spotted on River rd being ridden by a young possibly Hispanic woman. If you see it please please reach out. I'm heartbroken, that was my one and mode of independent transportation and it meant so much to me. Very identifiable, its a bright green with a parrot emblem on the front above the tire. It was originally marketed as a Jimmy buffet bike and has a yellow pineapple cup holder as well as baskets and a rear view I added onto it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
