Because why not?
I am a major YIMBY advocate (among other things) from Missouri who just moved to Modesto to be with family, so I felt like giving my new home a little love.
Here is my little light rail concept, which I am dubbing the Modesto Trolley. My initial intention was to add rail along major streets in Modesto, specifically McHenry Ave. The red line shown was my initial concept, running down from McHenry north of Sylvan/Standiford, to a loop downtown on J and H streets, past the future HSR/ACE station and down H/Paradise into West Modesto stopping just before Wade. The Blue line is my first addition to this concept, running from Vintage Fair, down past the MJC campuses on 9th Ave, past the aforementioned HSR/ACE station, all the way to North Ceres, stopping past Mitchell along Hatch.
Most of this runs along existing roads so it will be much cheaper compared to dedicated right-of-way, although some parts have their own right-of-way, mostly along the blue line in particular. Most expensive part will certainly be a tunnel under the 99 at Briggsmore/Carpenter, running from the Carpenter/MJC West station all the way to Prescott, where the train will emerge in the median. Another challenge will be a viaduct in Ceres, where the trolley would run high above the 99 connecting the southern end of 9th to Hatch. The tunnel and viaduct would be necessary to avoid complicating existing traffic at the Briggsmore/Carpenter and Hatch interchanges respectively.
This was made assuming signal priority would be implemented (which is a must for any rail line sharing right-of-way with cars).
