Story\Experience Years later, I still feel regret about not getting to serve
I went to college on an Air Force ROTC scholarship. I was the girl who wanted to be like Amelia Earhart, a woman aviator holding her own alongside the men. Sometime into the program I was disqualified from both my scholarship and from flying by the medical review board when mental health treatment I had received as a teenager came to light. I was so upset and frustrated, I was crushed really. They had enough faith in me to give me a full ride scholarship but not enough to trust that I'd moved on from some adolescent depression?
I moved on and tried out a variety of jobs and careers. Having been disqualified from military aviation I felt free to go all into my other thing which was rock n roll. But the pull never went away. Years later I had the idea that maybe I could do the next best thing and be on an air crew or do aerial search and rescue. I started the process of enlisting when I ran into the same damn problem, some anxiety medication I had been prescribed a couple of years before when I was going through fertility treatments was flagged and I wasn't allowed to enlist, despite being healthy and fit in every way. Over the couple of years I was trying to appeal that I basically aged out of being eligible.
Thing is, I'm still that person. Whenever there's trouble, I'm the first one to run to it, especially if someone needs help. I really love my country, even though I'm often surrounded by (completely irritating) people who hate it. And I still wish I had a chance to show a little valor in a world where that's supposed to be an obsolete virtue and where especially as a woman it's considered not important at all.
I'm not necessarily looking for advice about what to do with this, I just wanted to get it out. Responses welcome, though.

Story\Experience Trying to come out of my shell
had a remarkable exchange on a PTSD for vets subreddit yesterday. It was a simple check-in to see how everyone was doing.
Not that this was new, almost all of the support groups and therapists do those check-ins. I can’t explain why, but that thread struck me and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it for almost 24 hours straight.
I told the poster that not once in my life have I shared any details regarding the harder parts of my service or PTSD. This is true, I’ve addressed the PTSD symptoms with many therapists, but she doesn’t know how I developed them.
And in not one support group did I contribute, I found myself always thinking I was unworthy to contribute as my fellow brothers had been through worse. It was always engrained in me by my conservative Korean family, that I had it easy and everyone else’s problems were worse than mine.
I don’t even know where to begin… but I suppose I can share one thing that no one knows except my soon-to-be ex-wife. I am now an honorably discharged USAF Captain, after an unfortunate incident with a M18A1 Claymore… and have been a paraplegic for the past 6, almost 7 years.
I think right now, I find myself all that I can say, which is more I’ve said before.
if I might ask, how do you all deal with isolation, with survivors guilt… disability? Among other things… of course I’d never pry, so please don’t feel obligated to comment anything you’re not comfortable with.

Discussion Constant Tricare East referral problems for EFMP issue. Is Tricare Select or USFHP any better?
My daughter is in the EFMP program for a lazy eye. She's seen the same doctor for the last 6 years, but the vendor is in St. Louis and was transferred to Tricare West. Tricare East has now denied coverage on her last 2 visits. She also started Vision Therapy on a separate referral but it was denied when the bill was received.
The EFMP office says they can't help, that this is a Tricare issue. Tricare says the doctors are using the wrong codes but won't tell me what they are.
Her PCM says she's using the right referral codes. The specialists s,ay they are using the right codes.
I've spent countless hours in chat or on the phone with Humana. I'm out thousands of dollars. I'm waiting on a response from the patient advocate, but as open enrollment approaches I'm wondering if I should just switch to Tricare Select or USFHP. Is the the referral process any better for either of them?

Discussion Nurses in the Reserves?
Currently going to complete my 1yr as a new grad/resident nurse in oncology unit on December. Secured a CVICU/critical care position starting January.
I keep thinking about maybe doing 1-2 years critical care and taking that towards the military to expand skills, knowledge, experiences, etc. Also to hopefully get GI Bill and use that to further studies at one point.
Ideally, civilian nurse job with reserves commitment would be a good balance. Potentially open to active/officer, we'll see that down the line.
- Anyone out there doing civilian job + nurse in reserves?
- Which branch? Why did you pick that branch? Would you stay or recommend a different branch?
- Is it hard to get into reserves as a nurse?
- How long does it take to get full access to military benefits as reservist?
- Anyone started out Reserves and decided to commit to Active after a while? What made you leave civilian for full time military?
Any other input/advice/information from nurses in the military is more than welcome.
Thank you for your time.
