I want to look at and discuss Mazda's current line-up, Mazda's up-market push, the future of the (US) market, and predictions.
Firstly, the huge push for EVs in the US is dead. This isn't anti-EV, and I do still think every single manufacturer will eventually have a solid EV line-up sort of like every phone manufacturer is now building folding phones. I'm not going to give Mazda credit for waiting, when really they simply didn't have the resources as a small manufacturer.
For Mazda whose biggest market is the US, the future is undeniably hybrid. Let's look at the CX-5 which Mazda will finally be implementing their in-house hybrid system. I'm hoping it's reliable, closer to Honda's fun-to-drive system, and fuel efficient. Looking at the CX-5, I think it's a good car, but I know a lot of people are very disappointed by the minimalist/digital interior. I think Mazda will likely backtrack on this, or at least they should backtrack and reimplement SOME physical controls. We see this with Volkswagen and the golf. We see this with Toyota's RAV4 where management acknowledge they might've gone too far. I think eventually Mazda will too, and they should. This will remain as Mazda's bread and butter.
Next, is the CX-70/90. Mazda is already dropping the CX-70 per rumors, and simply offering the 90 as two or three row. I think it's safe to admit that the CX-70/90 platform is mostly a failure. It's not just tariffs, it's the reliability and reputation of these models. Every new year people swear up and down the multiple, various issues have been fixed, I don't see how someone unfamiliar is suppose to be able to know. Even I would opt for another brand if I were in the market. This is such a huge disappointment given that Mazda had so much riding on this platform. It was a huge push up-market in both performance and luxury having a BMW-like longitudinal RWD platform.
The question becomes, what's next? Can Mazda give this model a huge facelift and updates that attract buyers into thinking the model is completely issue-free? Will they finally put the powertrain into a non-SUV? They've invested so much into the platform, and I feel like they need a huge facelift to inject attention into the platform.
Then there's the Mazda 3. I have no idea what's going to happen with this vehicle other than Mazda's going to extend the life of it for at least another 2-3 years without a new generation. It seems like everyone is doing that. I don't think Mazda's in a position to develop a whole new 3 and gambling on a RWD Mazda 6 might be too big of a risk no matter how much I want it. They could give it a minor CX-5 like update adding more interior space, adjusting the exterior, with new styling on the interior. I wouldn't mind that with the new hybrid system although I was really hoping for a PHEV RWD/AWD Mazda 6 + i6 Turbo Mazda 6.
What are your thoughts? Personally don't know about the CX-30, and I think there are enough rumors about the Miata.
