Modeling Topology Megathread

Topology is the geometric structure of a polygonal mesh. It is the layout of the edges and vertices which define the shape of a mesh. A particular shape can be represented by many different topologies.

Mesh topolgy can never be considered without context. It is necessary to consider how a mesh will be used and modified in the future in order to say anything true about the suitability of its topology.

There are no hard rules when it comes to topology. Some people will say n-gons (polygons with more than 4 sides) are always bad. Some will say triangles are always bad. Some will say that non-manifold geometry is always bad, or that meshes with holes in them are always bad.

None of these are true, because mesh topology serves a purpose, or multiple purposes. It is not a goal in and of itself. If the purpose(s) is/are served by some particular topology, then that topology is good, whether or not it is itself aesthetically and technically appealing.

Often users are advised to avoid triangles or ngons when building topology--to keep to quads. This is good practice, because quads are easier to work with, easier to edit, easier to create UV projections for, they subdivide more predictably, and, most importantly, easier to produce aesthetically appealing deformations from.

However. If a mesh will not need to deform, then there is far less pressure to keep to quads. If the mesh will not be subdivided, even less. If the shape is well-represented by the topology, and it either already has a good UV projection or will not be needing one, then quads and ngons don't matter, unless the mesh will be altered in the future.

It is much harder to modify a mesh which isn't quads than one which is. Especially if you want to alter topology. However, altering shape, to a small extent, usually is not sensitive to topology. It's also generally easier to do UV projection and alteration of quad topology than triangle/ngon topology.

It is still important to point out that having SOME non-quad (especially triangles) in your deforming, high performance mesh which may be altered and have UVs applied, is still just fine in many circumstances. If the trangle won't interfere with these things--then it DOES NOT MATTER and you should spend time on other things. Same with n-gons, although those have a higher chance of causing technical issues.

Regarding non-manifold geometry: it is generally a bad thing. Many, MANY operations and programs will not function correctly when passed non-manifold meshes. However, if your mesh is serving all your purposes, and you don't see those purposes changing, then non-manifold geometry doesn't matter. The circumstances where this might be true, however, are extremely rare, and it is best to avoid it.

Regarding holes in the mesh: again, context matters. Some advanced simulation or mesh operations require "watertight" meshes. Most don't, and it doesn't matter. Context and circumstance will dictate what's appropriate.

Mesh weight matters, as well. There's generally not much call for more geometric detail than your mesh needs to create the shapes you need, either statically or deformed, and it is best to keep poly counts as low as possible while not compromising on these things. However, this must be balanced with the effort it requires to reduce detail. If you have a poly budget of 100k triangles for an object, and it's 50k but a lot of those are not necessary, it's still not worth the time to reduce it further. People hours are worth more than computer hours.

Where topology really starts to matter a lot is in efficient hard surface modeling, especially where the asset will be subdivided. Not having your edge flows follow surface details will make life difficult, and having too much mesh detail will make modification increasingly difficult.

The point here is that every situation is different, and no real determination of acceptable mesh topology can be made without all this context. If you look at an image of a mesh and don't know anything about what it will be used for or how it might be modified, you can't say anything true about the quality of topology. These and other questions must have answers, in order to judge *overall* topology:

  1. Will it deform?
  2. If so, how?
  3. Will it need to be edited in the future?
  4. If so, how?
  5. Will it be subdivided?
  6. Does it have or will it need a UV projection?
  7. Will the UVs need to change?
  8. If so, how?
  9. Will it need to be exported into another application?
  10. Will it be used in any type of simulation?
  11. Does it meet performance (budget) requirements?

These questions must have answers in order to come up with useful conclusions about how good the topology is or is not. And again, there are no hard rules. Topology is not a goal, it is a tool to help reach other goals. If a triangle doesn't affect those goals, there's no point spending energy removing it.

This thread will be a clearinghouse for information about topology, both in general, and specific to Maya. It will be heavily curated and updated as I encounter more/better information on the subject.

Eventually it will be turned into another wiki and be the redirect for the majority of topology threads we get here, in order to avoid repetition.

If you are a subject matter expert, please post images, videos, links, or your thoughts here. Feel free to copy parts of old comments or posts you have made.

Question How to render with flat lighting, without changing the texure?

I want the render to look like this, all flat and nice (which the viewport lets me see easily for some reason TT)

Hellooo, so I've been wanting to try a new shading technique I've just learned with an old file I made, but for that I would need a flat light pass with the bare colours, and another pass with a single sharp light.

I've been searching many tutorials but they all mention to change the color output by making a new material, but I think it would be a pain to change all my textures and then go back and change them again for the other pass which actually is affected by light.
I'm currently working with an aiStandardsurface as base.

Is there a way to change this in the rendering settings or maybe even a script?

Question Help with shooting gallery simulation

I have to do a kind of shooting gallery simulation using Mash and Maya Dynamics. I made one with MASH (Random, Dynamics, Offset, Distribute, etc.). This is how it's looking so far, but how can I make the arrows stick into the targets and not falling down?

I tried increasing the friction, and it works on the floor, but not on the targets or the walls. What can I do to improve this?

Plugin extrudX for Maya, extrude/offset without overlap faces

Maya extrudeX v1.0
https://youtu.be/n41ZJ96CyaQ

I'm working to improve the extrude tool and reduce overlapping faces when extruding edges.

Testing it with all kinds of geometry, from flat surfaces to curved shapes, including messy meshes and tricky corners, to see how well it handles different situations.

The algorithm has limits, and finding the right balance across cases is always a challenge. Still, I'd love to see more people try it out and share their feedback!

Student My First "Big" Maya Project for My Intro to 3D Animation Course

This was my midterm project that I had 5 weeks to do but decided to cobble together in about 17 hours. I made some Shinkansen rolling stock, In order: E5 Series, 0 Series, 500 Series. The project asked for three models one animated and 3 renders of each. I started working with Maya this semester and am still fairly new to 3D so they are rough, but I'm still proud of them. Any tips would be welcome (as long as they aren't too mean).

Animation rmGimbalMonitor - real-time gimbal lock monitoring tool for animators

Hello everyone! I’d like to share my first tool - rmGimbalMonitor.

It monitors how close character controls are to gimbal lock in real time and shows the result directly in a table with color-coded progress bars.

At the moment, it includes Biped and Quadruped presets, but the setup is fully customizable. You can edit control categories, change which controls are monitored, add skip rules, and assign custom category icons.

The tool is completely free and available on GitHub. The repository also includes installation instructions, compatibility information, known issues, and the development roadmap.

Animation Help—How do I make the wheel spin on its own?

Thumbnail

I have been trying to figure this out for hours. I have searched the internet, YouTube, and even sadly resorted to AI to attempt to tell me what's wrong in making this wheel work, but I just can't get it. I have tried using the Expression Editor and a few other things. I want the wheel to move automatically instead of having to painstakingly animate it myself when it comes time. A lot of people are saying to have the meshes and NURBS parented together, but with the tutorial I followed to make this control rig, it hasn't been possible thus far. I have provided images of my outliner and an image of the wheel/rig to give better context. The green wheel on the outside is my global controller that I want to move and have the wheel rotate with. The yellow Wheel_Base, blue is Wheel_Frame (Rim/arm), and red is the wheels themselves (CTRL_Wheel). I am still fairly new to Maya, and this is my first time rigging anything, so please go easy on me in the comments.

Question Trying to download Substance Painter plugin for Maya 2025. The title on the website mentions the download is for Maya 2025 but the download file has Maya 2027 in it. What do I do?

I had to switch to Maya 2025 from 2023 and now when I'm trying to use the substance painter plugin, it won't show up. Downloading and installing doesn't seem to work either because of a possible version mismatch. The main download link is supposedly for Maya 2025 while the download file mentions the 2027 version. I scrolled down for older versions but it provides the download links for versions upto 2024. What do I do?

Modeling Problem with Filling Hole on Mesh

I'm new to Maya. How can I get this roof to be closed? I need it to have the outer face on both the inner and outer, like it is on the rest of the mesh, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Tried Fill Hole and Bridge, but they won't work cause it isn't a border.

Any Help would be appreciated :)

Question Is there any way I can take the .ma data of a mesh and make it a .obj?

I was working on a retopology file some days ago. But when I open the file, it just keeps loading and loading while freezing maya. I suppose the file is corrupted since any other file opens without any issue.

Is there any way I can take the .ma data of a mesh and use that to make it into a .obj file? I'm using maya 2026.

Question Can you make it so also tool doesn't select vertices you can't see?

Hello friends! So Iately I've had to select many vertecies and stuff like that for Maya and modeling to do twerking, and I know that the lasso select tool would be a huge help but also I HATE that it also grabs the other side of whatever I'm looking at, I've searched though the tool settings and idk if I'm blind or stupid but I'd like to only select the vertices that are seen on my camera, and not select the things on the other side of my model

I am currently developing MayaMetaBridge, adding numerous features not found in the standard MetaHuman plugin. The Blender version is already complete, and I am now porting all those features to Maya. This enables a live workflow across the entire toolset: Unreal Engine, Maya, Cascadeur, and Marvelous Designer. Character HumanIK, mGear auto-rig generation, etc.
What do you think about this plugin?

Looking for Critique Student in 3D looking for advice for lighting

Post image

Disclaimer : sorry if there is any fault, English isn’t my first language.

Hi everyone, I have an assignment in my 3D Lighting class (on Maya of course) which consists of lighting and staging a scene with the teapot in the picture.
I tried something, but I’m not entirely satisfied with it. I don’t know exactly what’s wrong about it but there is definitely some things that could be improved.
I’m debating if I should maybe use the layers system (which I don’t know much about) to remove some of the lights effect on the floor.
Aside from that, I don’t really know what to do to really bring the scene together and create a coherent atmosphere.

This is why I need your help to figure out what’s working or not in this and what needs to change.
I’m still a beginner so please don’t be too harsh on me if I did something wrong.
I’m just looking for advice to improve myself and this scene.

Thank you in advance to anyone who will help, have a nice day !

Issues Weird Maya Editor Yellowing Bug

Thumbnail

Has anyone else noticed a weird issue where the white title bar on some of the editor windows looks almost yellowed like this?
This has been driving me nuts for ages as every time I see I think it is burn in on my monitor as it is localised to the left side of my screen but no it is something exclusive to Maya.
I have tested with whites, other colours and other monitors as well as this being a screenshot meaning that it is entirely a Maya thing and only when that editor is selected.
What makes it super weird is that when I shift the editors around the yellowing stays stationary to the left!

I am so confused by what is even causing this!?

So, I wanted to work on an assignment today—the teacher had provided a file with the model—but when I tried to open it, the program froze and the following message appeared. Now it won't let me into Maya; it kicks me out and I can't do anything.I apologize if my English is poor.Do you know any way to solve this problem?
