Part of the issue is that they’re effectively unemployed for 1/4 of the year (even though most teachers still do stuff for their job during that 1/4 of the year). Those 3 months aren’t paid time off. It’s unpaid. If it were PTO then they’d have an ok wage (still low, but it’d be much more livable).

Wait, do American teachers not get paid over breaks?

In Australia we do (rough term lengths)

  • 10 week Term 1
  • 2 week break
  • 11 week Term 2
  • 2 week break
  • 10 week Term 3
  • 2 week break
  • 12 week term 4
  • 6 week break

All of it fully paid.

We do still do a little bit of work during breaks. But mostly you enjoy the majority of that time away from school.

I'm a government school employee, so I get paid fortnightly (~AU$2600 per fortnight after tax)

They do. Usually theres an option to be paid only while is in session (so checks are bigger), or spread it out over 12 months.
