The photographer and the lens are really what make the difference. Not the camera.

to be fair: The camera and therefore autofocus matter considerably more in this challangeing setting than normal

Wouldn't a better option be to set the focus on a specific point and then set the camera to burst mode, rather than relying on autofocus?

That's one reason why having the stick in the way to force the dogs to jump is so useful. The photographer can pre-focus on the stick and only take pictures while the dog is in the right spot. That also makes the other pictures without sticks in the way harder to take and then you are relying on autofocus more

I feel like autofocus would be too slow for this. Setting the focus manually definitely seems more likely.

When have you last used a camera with autofocus? As long as it tries to focus at the right point it is amazingly fast nowadays

I haven't used a proper camera since late 2000s lol

Nah. Modern cameras autofocus is more than fast enough for this.

Yeah this seems super easy with manual focus on the log and then shooting burst. No need to make sure the autofocus target is on the dog this way. Just somewhat aim the camera and hold the button then crop. Nice setup either way though.

Yes, the camera still matters here but it's the sensor (big sensor for lots of fur details) and the quality of the burst mode (max no. burst shots, quality loss, processing time) that matter

Not really. The depth of field is very shallow, so having a fixed focus would be unlikely to have the dog’s face in focus at the best moment of the jump.

It's called a focus trap. You won't be auto focusing for these shots as the dog will be out of focus by the time the focus ring has moved. So you set a trap of X distance in front of and behind the log, so you get a bunch of usable shots per jump. What's not shown here is that some dogs would have had multiple goes at it before maybe getting 1 shot.

No, because you are also looking to get just the right expression as well

I’ve seen photographers that can get these shots on cameras without auto focus. Not dogging on AF. Just saying the camera has nothing to do with how good this shot is. You can get this exact shot with a Canon Rebel with AF turned off as long as you’re experienced/determined enough

This would have been a focus trap not auto focus

There's probably a bit of photoshop cleanup as well, getting rid of any dirt on the dog, imperfections, etc.

Nah, this kinda shit needs a modern mirrorless or you are going to be at it for days.

You don't need a modern mirrorless. A good DSLR will do this too. Fast lens, like 2.8 70-200, you set focus trap for the log and you set shoot to burst. My own 10 year old DSLR will do this at 10 shots per second. And you can maintain that speed for over a hundred shots before the buffer starts giving out.

I own a flagship DSLR and Mirrorless - you can do this in 1/10th the time with a mirrorless camera and you know it.

You said you need a modern mirror less or you are going to be at it for days which isn't true.

"Days" is an obvious exaggeration, but mirrorless cameras are objectively way better at this kinda tasks than DSLRs are

A really good modern mirrorless makes this easier? Sure. But the comment was you NEED a modern mirrorless to do this without being there for days (or whatever they meant). Even 10 years ago on a prosumer dslr this was a 45 minute (and a kilo of peanut butter) shoot tops.
