Hi everyone
I’m new to macOS (I’m using a MacBook Air M4 with macOS 27.0.1) and I’d like to share some of my impressions and concerns about the user interface, as well as ask for some advice.
Coming from experience with Linux, Windows, and FreeBSD, I really appreciate that macOS is a plug-and-play system, with seamless peripheral integration and exceptional audio quality for a laptop of this size. The trackpad, in particular, is truly excellent and reminds me of the reliability of the one on my old Toshiba laptop.
However, I’ve encountered a few aspects that aren’t very intuitive:
- Automatic startup: The Mac starts up when I plug in the power adapter or open the lid. I had to use Terminal to disable this behavior (which also woke up my girlfriend with the unexpected startup sound), which isn’t very user-friendly.
- Dock customization: To adjust the Dock’s appearance timing, I had to resort to Terminal again. Additionally, I find the activation when the cursor hovers over the bottom edge to be unresponsive.
- Magic Mouse: Despite its useful gestures, I find it unergonomic and more like a Magic Trackpad than a Magic Mouse.
- Scrolling with third-party mouse: When “natural scrolling” is enabled, the scroll wheel on a standard mouse moves in the opposite direction than expected.
- Stability and crashes: I’ve experienced a couple of crashes resulting in a black screen while using GarageBand, and I wasn’t sure how to handle the restart.
- Workspace management: Opening certain apps (like Telegram) automatically creates a new workspace in Mission Control. It would be helpful to be able to customize this behavior more easily.
What do you think? Do you have any advice or solutions to suggest for these issues?
Finally, since I’m new to the ecosystem, I’d like to ask if you have any free apps to recommend on the App Store to help me start exploring its full potential.
Thanks, everyone
