Question Microphone recommendations for recording vocals and instruments?

Hi everyone! I’ve just got a MacBook Pro and I’m going to be using Logic Pro to start creating some music.
I’m looking at microphones at the moment and would love some recommendations. I’m mainly wanting to record vocals, but I’d also like to record some of my sound healing instruments, particularly crystal singing bowls.
I have a Roland FP-90 digital piano too, which I believe I can connect via MIDI.
I’m hoping to buy something good quality that will last, rather than buying something cheap and having to upgrade later on.
I’m assuming I might need different microphones for vocals and instruments, but I’m not really sure where to start!
What microphones are you using and would you recommend them? Any advice would be really appreciated ✌️

Discussion I built a MIDI browser after getting tired of Logic’s awkward MIDI preview workflow

I’ve been using Logic for years, and one thing that has always bothered me is browsing normal MIDI files.

If you have a larger MIDI library, filenames usually tell you very little about what is actually inside. My workaround for a long time was dragging batches of MIDI files into Live Loops, putting an instrument on the track and auditioning them there. It works, but it is obviously not a very convenient browser.

So I eventually built a small plugin specifically around that workflow.

cueMIDI lets you browse MIDI files from folders, preview them in sync with Logic through the instrument you are actually using, transpose them if needed, and drag the MIDI you want straight into the project.

For Logic there is a dedicated AU MIDI FX version, so it sits directly in the MIDI FX slot (there's also a VST3 version).

I deliberately kept it pretty minimal. No database, no tagging system, no MIDI generation, no library management/ database. It is basically just the workflow I always wanted Logic to have for MIDI files.

There is a demo if anyone wants to try it:

Short video:

Happy to answer any Logic-specific questions about how it works.

Question Preset for recording with wired apple earbuds

I’ve been trying to record vocals using my apple wired earbuds, and no matter what I do with EQ or the compressor it sounds like garbage. I know it’s possible to get clear audio with this mic, as I know multiple artists who use it. Does anyone have a preset or advice for clear audio with these?

Question New Mac. Logic has lost all file links

Hi. I just got new Mac upgrading from something quite old. Used Time Machine to restore and have updated logic as well. All projects have lost links to all audio files. The paths logic is looking for are still there, verbatim, as are the files. Locating manually works but only one file at a time. Its not triggering logic to look in that location for the rest. If I try to search the files it skips through like it’s not searching at all and fails to find the files. Any advice?

In Search of Feedback Feedback for a new Plugin

I recently released a generative instrument you can use inside Logic Pro and locally on your Mac.

You can see and here it there: www.youtube.com/@einaux

You can find it here: www.einaux.com

It works in your session, listens to your tracks and ideas and can generate all kind of reactions to what is already there. Or you use it to get inspiration and start from scratch.

I invite anyone interested in this kind of workflow to test it, give me feedback, grill me, ask me. I'm here to listen. Thanks!

Question SoundBlind Drum Routing in Logic

Ive been using Fl studio for the last 10 years or so and have recently made the switch to Logic, Im using a Mac and Fl studio just sucks so using logic was the obvious choice. My question is, for anyone that's used Powerkit by Soundblind (or something similar) the pre-mixed sound in the plugin sounds great, but as soon as I try to route out the kit, the sound gets blown out. For instance, I'll be listening to pre-mixed kit, then as soon as I route out the snare, it gets louder and honestly just sounds horrible. Not sure if its something im doing or what, honestly at a loss

Question How do I record the audio coming from my plugin?

Sorry, I’ve been out of the game a while. I recently bought the Plogue Chipsynth SFC and it’s been a blast tinkering around with it. I can get Logic to play the synth from midi piano roll from Logic no problem. My issue is, I can’t figure out how to record the audio that is being played from Chipsynth back into Logic. When I create an audio track to do so, I can’t find the Chipsynth on the list of possible inputs and the Chipsynth has no output setting of its own. Any help is appreciated, thanks

Discussion Interesting synth patch conundrum

(V10) I have an interesting scenario where a lot of the synth patches seem to be panned a bit to the right. I've scoured all software, sends, and busses for pans, the meter reads same peak levels L+R, but the image is shifted to the right. Always the right, never left. I even started to wonder if my monitors were malfunctioning, or if my left ear is bad. I switched L+R in a gain plugin and the image switches to the left so it's not hardware or my ears 👍🏼 still confusing. Two I can think of off the top of my head are "flea market wurli" and "new carnival synth" if anyone wants to check if theirs are the same. I can live with it, it's just an interesting thing and wondering if anyone has noticed this and found a decent workaround

Question What is the purpose of stereo imaging in a mix?

Okay please note I am still quite new in the mixing process and there are many things I still have to learn about and I am taking some small steps so please be nice to me. So basically I always see like a lot of like producers and audio engineers use it a lot, so I’m wondering what is the purpose of it? Is it a necessary thing to use just like with compression or EQ or like something you know “optional”? If so, which do you recommend the most for beginners like me?

Question Audio interface

I am wondering what others are doing for new audio interfaces if you have a Mac mini M5 Pro.

I am looking at these products:
SSL 12
Volt 476
Audient ID24 or 44
Motu M4 or M6
Motu Octalite (this is a big cost, but it appears I may be able to stop use of my older mixer).

I’m really interested in trying to work with older analog gear Via an insert using logic pros I/O plugin

Any perspectives on preferred or not preferred audio interfaces are much appreciated. This is a very confusing topic for me.

Question Creating mono tracks from a stereo track that was dual mic

I have a stereo track that was sent to me that the left channel is mic’d with a different mic than the right channel, and I’m trying to split the two to create two mono channels with the different mics. Each mic is either hard left or hard right. I also want to make sure that the track is viewed as mono, not stereo

Question Mixing and mastering rap using only stock plugins ?

Hi Logic Pro,

I currently use Ableton, MixBox and TS Rack to try and mix my tracks , but I’m having a really hard time getting it right.

My old M1 8GB ram Mac Mini still runs fortunately, is it worth it to send the stems over to my Mac and try to mix/master there.

Buying a new mac isn’t really an option now.

PS: If anyone is open to helping me master a 5 track project let me know, I’ll pay a reasonable rate.

Question Game plan to learn production from scratch

Hi everyone. I'm 24F, live in SoCal, and my whole life I've identified as a singer-songwriter. I'm mainly into pop, electronic, and rock music but am interested in making jazz pop too. I have no extensive musical training beyond a few vocal lessons and taking one audio engineering class at UCLA extension school. I don't play any instruments. I really want to learn producing, not because it's a huge passion of mine honestly, but because relying on paying other producers to make my tracks is simply unaffordable for me, and most of the time I pay an arm and a leg to get a subpar mix and deal with terrible communication because they just don't care. I'm willing to invest in some equipment if it's going to be used long term. I have a studio setup in my room with a really good mic, studio monitors, and a computer which I've collected over the years.

I use Logic and Splice right now and have been playing around with both. I used to use GarageBand a lot to record covers and demos, so I know some recording and vocal layering basics. I've also made a few song mashups and really basic remixes over the years for fun. Still, every time I try to go deeper into using Logic, it feels like I'm looking at a plane's controls, and it's overwhelming and complicated to me. My beats right now sound conceptually good, but the BPM and pitch of the tracks don't always match 100%, like you can tell something is off but I can't pinpoint the issue much less fix it.

What would be a good game plan for someone like me to dive into learning to produce and get to a decently good skill level within 1-2 years? Are there specific YouTube channels, classes, websites, etc I should be looking at? Currently just winging it and playing with loops, but I'd like to actually make beats that I could use for my music releases.

Help Phase issue when recording guitar amp with 2 Mics

Hi everyone. I recently bought another mic to record my guitar cab. It's a 2 mic setup, and I am having trouble figuring out how to get everything in phase. I got both mics running into my interface, and I want to be able to have them in phase regardless of how close or far away one mic may be from the amp to another. I'm fairly new to all this, so I'd greatly appreciate your help here. Thanks!

Help Key command for opening a track’s input menu?

Hi,

Is it possible to assign a key command for Logic to open a selected track’s input menu in the the mixer view? I can operate logic almost completely without having to touch my mouse so this feels really tedious.

I didn’t find an answer googling this so here goes nothing.

Question KORG nanoPAD2 MIDI assignments won’t trigger Live Loops scenes

Hi y'all

I’m using Logic Pro on an M3 MacBook Air with a KORG nanoPAD2. I’d like to trigger Live Loops scenes from the nanoPAD2 pads.

Logic receives the nanoPAD2’s MIDI messages correctly. I’ve tried assigning both MIDI Note and Control Change messages to scenes through Controller Assignments, and assigning a pad to a Live Loops key command through Learn New Assignment. The assignments appear correctly in Logic, but pressing the pad does not trigger the scene.

The scenes work when clicked onscreen, and the corresponding keyboard shortcut works. I’ve also verified the CC messages in Logic’s MIDI activity display.

Has anyone successfully used a nanoPAD2 to trigger Live Loops scenes in Logic Pro? Is there a known limitation or a particular setting required for generic MIDI controllers?

Help Automating 8DIO plugin manually

Hey all!

So I'm sure this has a simple solution but I've not had any luck so far! I've got a project using a lot of 8DIO strings, I'm wanting to take some MIDI that I put together and, using the automation menu, manually automate the dynamics dial of the instrument (which is loaded in via Kontakt ) and the only option I have is a dropdown menu of numbers with hashtags, 511 to be exact!

Of course there's right-clicking to program a MIDI controller, but there's gotta be a way of assigning it manually. I'm not sure what it is, any advice would be mega helpful! :]

Discussion HATE POST FOR DAW

Do you think it's helpful to be ruled by a computer's metronome?

Call me a bad musician, but I play relative to myself and others, always have, and my blood pressure is through the roof trying to wrap my head around loops and recording stuff into a DAW. I used to use old cakewalk to burn cds - but everything is a perfect millisecond off in logic that the whole song falls apart. I've made some fairly coherent stuff before using logic pro, but today is not my day.

What is the difference between Keep/Adapt/Auto? Why should I bother? I lay down a riff and build off of it, ignoring what the numbers are. I know that's my problem, but everything's relative in my music world - I've been wasting precious time at the desk doing something I could have just gotten in one take if I had more people with me right now.

If it's any help to my rapport with you kind strangers, I started out as a drummer, then a horn player, then guitarist/vocalist. I came to hate metronomes, always taught to "feel the room" and all that jargon. Has it finally bitten me in the butt? Thx, love yall, happy musicianing and whatever

In Search of Feedback would you use a tool to convert FL Studio projects to Logic Pro

I've been thinking about building a tool that converts FL Studio projects into native Logic Pro projects, with the goal of preserving as much of the original project as possible.
That means transferring the arrangement, audio and MIDI clips, mixer channels and routing, automation, and plugin settings. Ideally, FL native plugins would also be recreated as compatible Logic plugins, so the project would open and remain editable without needing FL Studio installed.
The goal is to get as close as possible to a 1:1 conversion, so you can continue working in Logic without having to rebuild the project from scratch.
It's a pretty ambitious idea, so I'm curious:
Have you ever wanted to move an FL Studio project to Logic?

Which parts would absolutely need to survive the conversion for it to be useful?

Would you pay for a tool that could reliably convert your projects like this?
