Posting standards for this community

The moderator team has observed a pattern of low effort posting of articles from outlets which are either known to be of poor quality, whose presence on the subreddit is not readily defended or justified by the original poster.

While this subreddit does call itself "less"credibledefense, that is not an open invitation to knowingly post low quality content, especially by people who frequent this subreddit and really should know better or who have been called out by moderators in the past.

News about geopolitics, semiconductors, space launch, among others, can all be argued to be relevant to defense, and these topics are not prohibited, however they should be preemptively justified by the original poster in the comments with an original submission statement that they've put some effort into. If you're wondering whether your post needs a submission statement, then err on the side of caution and write one up and explain why you think it is relevant, so at least everyone knows whether you agree with what you are contributing or not.

The same applies for poor quality articles about military matters -- some are simply outrageously bad or factually incorrect or designed for outrage and clicks. If you are posting it here knowingly, then please explain why, and whether you agree with it.

At this time, there will be no mandated requirement for submission statements nor will there be standardized deletion of posts simply if a moderator feels they are poor quality -- mostly because this community is somewhat coherent enough that bad quality articles can be addressed and corrected in the comments.

This is instead to ask contributors to exercise a bit of restraint as well as conscious effort in terms of what they are posting.

Mounting concern in Australia over UK ability to deliver SSN-AUKUS

Thumbnail navylookout.com

While visiting UK officials..assured Australian audiences that the SSN-AUKUS program is on track, a common-sense, empirical examination of Royal Navy operational deployment data reveals it to be running perilously close to complete shutdown.

Operating on the absolute edge..The core of the crisis lies in the collapse of the UK’s submarine enterprise force generation. The ageing Vanguard-class deterrent fleet now appears to consume virtually all available industrial bandwidth..

Skill fade, recycled command, and the escort vacuum..With in-service SSNs immobilised..availability has effectively dropped to zero. This..has broken the training and qualification pipeline..

Preliminary Design Review(PDR) marks the formal end of Concept/Assessment..was scheduled for September 2026. Yet, recent statements in Australia..reframing slips as “taking time to design the right submarine”..without a new date.

Australia is building a more mobile and dispersed Army, designed to..project land power into the littoral..will depend on whether the logistics infrastructure, services and supply chains..can work together as a connected system.

..how the Defence Force (ADF) will generate, move, sustain and regenerate force across the north, and the bases, ports, airfields, transport corridors, stocks, workforce, health support and commercial capacity needed to do so.

..clarify how major operating and supporting nodes will work together, strengthen critical civilian capacity and give industry greater certainty to invest in northern sustainment.

“They [Americans] told Ukrainians no warning happened because of bad weather conditions, which is seen as not an adequate reason in Kyiv. Thus many are getting increasingly worried this might not have been the case,” an official familiar with the matter told POLITICO on condition of anonymity."

From another politico link on the missile warning topic. I wonder did the weather condition have anything to do with the fiery black smoke over Russia's burning diesel refineries?

Why are PLA Navy torpedo retrievers classified as "Transport ships" in the naming system?

For context, a lot of PLAN auxiliary ships(post 1990s, maybe 1980s?) follow a naming system of "Theater command navy" - "Classification" - "number"; I have a full list of meanings here.(and a photo of a type 917A torpedo retriever at the bottom)

If you've seen any PLAN Torpedo retrievers, they have the classification of "运", aka transport ship(or cargo ship), which I find rather weird. Even more curiously, in some very early photos(Pic 1; probably a 1960s or 1970s designation system i presume?), the name "Hai(海, aka 海军, or navy)-Lao(捞, aka 捞雷船, or torpedo retriver)" did use the name "torpedo retriever", while in pic 4 of the same gallery, Y (probably from 1970s or 1980s), or transport ship (Yùnshū chuán) is at the start of the name, so PLAN Naming systems did use "torpedo retriver" before.

In fact, in official media(e.g. people's daily), the term of "torpedo retriever" is also used, so it seems like only in naming that torpedo retrievers are called "transport ships".

In the same article, the longer form of 捞运雷勤务保障船 is used, aka "Torpedo retrieval and transportation support ship" is also used, so my theory is that PLAN Torpedo retrivers are also used to transport torpedoes, or their action of taking the torpedoes back counts as "transport", but I'm happy to hear other theories.

FPV drone weaves through obstacles in military training in Xinjiang

Judging by numerous public reports, the Russia–Ukraine war appears to have accelerated tactical reforms within the People’s Liberation Army, with large numbers of FPV being incorporated into platoon- and squad-level combat and logistical units.

Working in conjunction with the long-range artillery, army aviation helicopters and reconnaissance-and-strike drones of combined-arms formations, FPV have effectively filled a gap in the PLA’s capability for rapid, close-range fire strikes. This role was originally intended for loitering munitions, but it currently appears that FPV are on the verge of replacing them.
