Project Started VFX, added modern water shader
Hello again!
Just a brief update this day. The Combat is really coming together now that the VFX are starting to work. I eventually plan on remastering them once the game is dont end to end, so for now just having smooth classic ones is nice.
I'm working on the battle camera as well, to help it ease instead of teleport or jerk around. Its proven to be more work than expected, but since so much of the game is combat I felt it was worth it.
I've also tried to cut down on the "waiting" parts of the game. So in between turns, or between attacks, battle start, moveing through doors, etc are all much faster than before (since we arent emulating, we don't need to wait for ancient ps1 hardware to load things, woo!). The result is much better QoL and pacing imo. The dialogue fill is also 25% faster too, so the quick readers in the world won't be waiting around as much.
The framerate is rock steady at 60 fps locked, and well over 100 fps on my laptop on max settings, so performance is looking good too.
I also took some time to replace the water planes with some actual displacement/caustics/normals based water. The beach sand also has a "wet" effect that slowly fades after water has touched it to really ground the scenes. Looks good in battle, better in screenshots.
Figured some GIFs would be a happy medium between pictures and videos, so I don't have to OBS capture a bunch yet. Will do a Rim Elm playthrough soon once I have a few more bugs worked out
