Wallets Insert Witty Required "This is my first project" Title

This really truly is my first thing made of leather. I am a collector of many hobbies and leather is the latest. I learned many things in this project and I look forward to the next one already.

Enjoy my Pancake.

Lessons learned in no particular order:

-Cut quality matters! I didn't use the right tool for my first cuts and it shows. After getting the wallet assembled, there was a lot of time and effort that then went into trying to get the edges flush and smooth.

-Raw hand alignment is hard. Yeah... I ended up saying screw it after the first side and I 3d printed a corner jig. The second side went WAY better. Faster, easier, cleaner.

-Eyeballing doesn't line things up. "Pancake" was eyeballed more or less, and it shows. "0 of 0" was ligned up on the score mark, and it shows.

-stamps take as many hits as needed and if it's too shallow, the detail disappears when it drys.

-Glue holds the pieces, but stitching keeps them there. The panels for the card slots are already cracking loose. I'll stitch them over the weekend and hopefully that solidifies the edges a little.

- finish the edges of all panels before final assembly. It's going to be way to hard to access the interior edges of the panels now, so this is just going to keep a raw edge.

-use a good template. I don't like the way certain features line up. The tan card slot isn't tall enough so that made fitment less forgiving and less aesthetic. I think it just needs a thicker line to break up the other panels.

I named this one "Pancake" because when making pancakes, the fist one always sucks. Its burnt or underdone. It's got a weird shape. Maybe it stuck to the pan. It always sucks but you have to make it anyways. It let's you get to the next Pancake and the next. They rest of the batch is better but first you have to make one that sucks.

Skills practiced/learned:

Literally everything

Cutting leather

Glue

Sand

Burnish

Stamping

Stitch punching and stitching (soon)

Holsters/Sheaths Leather perfume box / holder sleeve

Post image
• Upvotes

I am new to leather crafting and want to make a simple box sleeve for this small perfume bottle (a custom leather fragrance I made). The bottle is very small, about 4" H x 1" W x 1" D. For the template, I am thinking of just using a single piece cut into a cross shape, folding the four sides around the center base. I know making the corners look neat and box stitching them nicely is the hardest part. A couple questions:

  1. Materials: I have a thin 1.1mm flatgrain chrome-tanned leather sheet and 0.4mm stiffener sheet. I don't know if the stiffener will be needed to hold shape on such a small bottle, but I got it just because it might be easier to for the glass to slide in-and-out instead of against the suede.

Besides the leather I have the following:

3mm Pricking Iron set, needles & 0.45mmthread, awls, wing divider, #0 beveler, exacto cutter, leather glue/cement, sandpaper, edge color, wax.

  1. Construction: The main thing is I want it to stand upright rather than falling over. My concept is to cut a single piece in a cross (+) shape, base in center, then folding the corners around and box stitching the corners? Should I use the stiffener pieces and glue them to the internal sides or no?

  2. Edges/Corners: If I do the box stitch, what's the cleanest way to stitch the edges and base corners? I don't think I'm capable of rolled edges and skivving, especially on such a small piece, but maybe that would give cleaner finish? Should I just bevel, sand, paint, and wax the corners?

Sorry if these are super basic questions, any advice would be appreciated!

Question How is this bottom card reveal done??

Regarding the card holder, the bottom card on both sides, how do we ensure that the bottom card doesn't slide the down and become hidden in use.

I hope my question is clear.

Question How to waterproof leather for fly fishing gear?

I'm interested in making some fly fishing accessories like a reel cover, and fly wallet. The reel cover is just to protect the reel in transit. I don't think it would get exposed to too much water.

The fly wallet is a zippered pouch to store flys in. It may get exposed to more water, or wet hands.

How would you go about sealing veg-tan leather to prevent water marks?

Some years ago, I started working with leather to make BDSM gear for me and my wife. It was solid, but not so beautiful.. :)

After learning more by making leather belts and wallets, I came back to where I started, and I’m really happy with the result!

Curious what you think!

Question Need some corner/layers advice...

Thumbnail

I know there's some good things going on with these practice pieces but all I see are the problems...

Black layers are uneven.

Corner stitching is atrocious.

Stitching is a nightmare to accomplish. I see videos on YouTube where people are effortlessly pulling alpine white thread through their pieces. When I do it, I need pliers to pull through. Sometimes on both sides! The thread becomes dirty and the edges distort and mushroom from all the pulling etc...I'm using a 4mm French style pricking iron to punch through all 5 layers. I have the 8 hole/2 hole/1. John James #2 needles and 1.2 Ritza tiger thread.

Thoughts?

Question (not my work!) How would the pattern and construction for a pouch like this look?

Post image
7 Upvotes

(this image is not my work, if you know the creator lmk so I can credit them)

I'd like to make a pouch like this, and I'm confident my skills match the task. I'm just not sure how to approach the patternmaking of this! And the construction, too... My inclination would be to sew the soft panels to the front, then sew that assembly to the backpanel, but then I'm not sure what shape the soft panels need to be.

Any advice from someone who's made one of these, or a tutorial/pattern, would be appreciated. Thanks!

Question Possible first time project

Hey guys, I am going to buy a travellers notebook cover and am going to convert it into a wallet. I thought about at least stitching in a zipper pouch to the back of it myself. Do you guys think that is an appropiate beginners task?

Wallets Japanese Shell Cordovan Wallet

Cash Beacon - one of my flagship wallets. This one has been heavily customised though - higher cash pocket, open internal pockets for easy access to hidden pocket, and the cash pocket has a massive skip stitch down the side, again for easy access to the cash pocket. This required A LOT of forward planing to make sure stitches lined up and keep things open. The reverse sides, where the stamp is, have been glazed with Tokonole for added protection. And the brand stamp inside the cash pocket was intentional. I love using Leder Ogawa shell cordovan, the finish is amazing, colour range is on point and its easier to work with than other shell brands. This is truly one of a kind. Hope you guys like it!

Wallets A unique experience to test a pattern, the Cape Islander.

I had the really cool opportunity to be asked to test a new pattern that DSLeatherGoods was cooking up as part of a collaboration with OALeather as part of a pattern representing Canada by being named after one of our boats, the Cape Islander.

This was a really cool opportunity, I’m still what I would consider a beginner to amateur at best with less than a year of doing this under my belt so to be asked to test was pretty flattering so thank you for that.

This is the compact version of the wallet in Buttero Hatch and Navy Pueblo with OA’s house thread. It’s .8mm so it has a bit of a chunky look I personally love. It holds Canadian bills but there’s also a cash pocket version to free up room on the inside for more cards.

All in all, super cool pattern. Super cool experience and as always, thanks for looking!
