Discussion The Unrealistic Realities of Nairobi

We are at this place in Parklands where cocktails go for KES 1,800 (you can taste cheap liquor at the bottom of those fancy glasses). The place itself looks fancy asf, with chandeliers and extra-polished floors. It's one of those restaurants where all the waiters are wearing these large-framed clear glasses, and they write down everything, even if it's a single Malta order.

Sasa, I'm on a date with this chille I met on Reddit. It's actually our third meet-up, and we are on the second glass of cocktail but still picking out words so carefully. The conversation isn't taking off...

It's midweek. After two hours of jumping from one sinking topic to another, we decide we've had too many cringy moments. Let's call it a night.

That was August. She never texted again, and I never reached out.

Mimi, I gave up finding love or trying relationships in this city a long time ago. And I always find myself in these cocktail spots in the hope that I can hit and maybe find someone real deep inside, because the surface is too empty to even comprehend understanding, let alone affection.

Sijui kama it's my choice of women or I've just failed to culturally assimilate to Nairobi. The Instagram restaurants, streak meals... it's just too plastic banaa.

Sasa, I've sat there performatively pretending that I'm enjoying a cuisine I can't even pronounce, as I try to understand what you're saying behind that fake Atlantic accent ๐Ÿ˜…, in a face that has a lot going on: piercings, lashes, glitters... Girl, it looks like your face has multiple layers.

What happened to going out to a real restaurant with a real meal, where we are talking like people and not like we are auditioning for a role?

Discussion Bullying in schools

Last year, towards the end of the school year, I was having one of my usual conversations with my son when he told me something that shook me to my core. He said that if he had to go back to that school, he would rather commit suicide. He was only ten years old.

I was shocked. It had never crossed my mind that a child so young could be carrying such heavy thoughts. I asked him if he had thought about how he would do it, and he told me he hadn't thought that far.

Needless to say, I changed him to another school.

What hurt me even more was learning about all the bullying he had endured over the four years he had been at that school. He had barely complained about it before, and I had no idea just how bad things had become until that conversation.

Please, let us be more attentive to our children. Let us create safe spaces where they can speak freely without fear of being dismissed, judged, or blamed. Check in on them, listen when they talk, and pay attention even when they seem perfectly fine.

Let us be parents, our children feel safe enough to tell anything to, even the things that are difficult for us to hear.

Discussion Don't crucify me, but I feel most open plan kitchens are s-cam

You find someone advertising a one bedroom but it looks like a bedsitter but with an extra room. Am I the only one who prefers the kitchen to have its own room too? I feel like most landlords are just using small spaces for one bedroom nowadays.

Let's say something like a kitchen with it's own room and it's big enough to fit in all the kitchen stuff.

What do you guys think about open plan kitchens

Discussion Yes as a nation we should normalize beating creepy men

I'm sorry, yes I'm pretty, yes you don't need to oogle at me or touch me. Listen, I'm pansexual and gladly attracted to women.

I look at women and I feel the EXACT same attraction Kenyan men do, yet they can't stop touching women pale CBD and sexualizing and hitting on women who are clearly not in the mood.

Like if I can calm myself u can calm YOURSELF too

Istg if a creepy man touches me, I'll GLADLY BEAT his ass w my brass knuckles, I NEVER go to CBD unequipped and you shall ALL know it if you test me. I'm not even wrong bc men "never said no" to getting beat, and technically they never wore anything that said they don't enjoy getting beat up.

You get what you expect ๐Ÿ˜˜ (before mods get me, this is sarcasm so to speak im OBV not going around beating niggas

  2. every time waking up from sleep, feeling completely useless
  3. being unemployed while still living with parents
  4. being unemployed when parents' financial situation is just not great
  5. waking up in the morning still in a state of unemployment.

Does it get any better

Discussion In your circles, how many people of marriageable age are actually in serious relationships or married?

I've been looking at the people around me whether its my siblings, cousins, close friends or relatives who have reached that "actual age" where society expects them to have a spouse or be in a serious relationship leading to marriage, maybe around mid 20's to early 30's stretching out to late 30's.

Kwa ground inafeel like the dynamics are changing heavily.some people say its the economic times and the changing priorities meaning fewer people are settling down while others feel like everyone in their circles is getting hitched.....look at your immediate circles(friends, family and peers who are at that age..what does it look like?

I was out for a walk with my dog just metres from home and a lorry (zile za mchanga not TATA) was speeding my way,, I stood aside to let him pass but he didn't ignored me crossing with my dog and ran over her.. The front tyre was on top of her for a good 15 or so seconds before I told him to back up and release her.. He started cursing at me and when I dragged my dog to the sidewalk the guy never came down from the car he just sped off,, some onlookers with motorbikes started following him but he was too quick and disappeared... She has a double compound fracture on her lower back leg and is set for amputation in the morning (Friday morning).. I have a partial numberplate and I know the vehicle passes along this route towards the quarry nearby,, so how do I go about compensation even just for the surgery

Casual Experience is the best teacher

Life sometimes has a humorous and unexpected way of teaching you important lessons. So, while in high school, l used to have this habit of constantly complaining. I used to complain so much that people used to be bored of me. That time, it hadn't clocked to me that it was a habit that l had cause most of the time, l did it unconsciously.

So, in uni, l became friends with this certain girl. What l liked about her was that she was very ambitious like for example, she had gotten a well-paying job while in third year of uni purely based on hard work alone and had already started a side hustle so l wanted to follow her footsteps. The downside was that she was a constant complainer. She would complain so much and l realised how annoying it was to be around her. It reached a point that whenever we could hang out, l would feel completely drained because of our interaction.

Now it started clicking what l was told in high school, and l made a deliberate effort to grow out of that bad behaviour. Years later, l started slipping slowly into that old habit without even me noticing. So, no long ago, l was taking a bus home when l was seated besides this girl. I asked her if she could help me see the payment that was in front. It was at night, and the light was dim.

Immediately, she started complaining, saying things like they couldn't think about the people on the back when placing the payment details at the front, they are not smart, etc. It was a long day for me, and l was in the mood of listening to one more negative thing, so l decided to completely stay silent. Now, l started doing self reflection and realised that l was starting to behave the same and realised how annoying it could be

The best advice that l ever received is that l should never reach a point in life that l can say that l am 100% perfect and l am not ready to change or learn something each and every day!!!

Discussion Millennial vs Gen Z

I hate the whole debate on who does what and who is like what. Gen z are dumb for age shaming millennials thinking it's cool not realising in a few years they'll be in the same position. Millennials are even more stupid for falling for the ragebait and believing all the stereotypes they hear about Gen zs.

Anytime I see someone talk about millennials ama Gen z in a conversation while trying to justify a certain notion. I get this urge to nuke them.

Ps. Don't ask me kama mimi ni Gen z ama millennial I'll crash out.

Discussion Is it just me, or has Kenyan TV news become more about politics than the real issues affecting Kenyans?

Lately, I've been feeling like watching the news on most Kenyan channels has become less informative than it used to be. It seems like almost half the news bulletin is dominated by politics, politicians exchanging accusations, political alliances, who said what about whom, and endless political drama.

Meanwhile, there are so many real issues affecting ordinary Kenyans that deserve more attention: the cost of living, unemployment, education, healthcare, corruption, insecurity, and the everyday struggles people are going through.

I miss the feeling of watching the news and actually learning something useful about what's happening in the country and how it affects people's lives. These days, you can watch an entire news bulletin and walk away knowing all the latest political drama but barely anything new or meaningful about the issues that directly affect you.

Don't get me wrong, politics is important, and the media has a responsibility to hold leaders accountable. But shouldn't that accountability involve more than just covering politicians' statements and political rivalries? Where is the deeper investigative journalism, the follow-ups on important stories, and the coverage that helps ordinary citizens understand the problems facing the country?

Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way, or perhaps I'm just remembering the old days differently.

What do you guys think? Have Kenyan news channels become too politically focused, or is this simply what attracts viewers? And if you feel the same way, do you think the quality of news coverage has declined, or have the priorities of the media just changed?

Ask r/Kenya Help me understand the scam

Put up my car for sale through a broker last night. At 5am he called me saying someone expressed interest in buying it and was on his way from Naivasha to view and test drive.

The buyer arrives at around 7 am. But I had work and informed them I could free myself up at lunch hour for the test drive. Additionally, they had not bothered to confirm my availability for the day, aliambia broker ako njiani at 5am.

We met with the broker at lunch hour for the test drive. The prospective buyer turns out to be a group of 4 men. They come inspect the car, take pictures and only request to start running the engine. They then say they are ready to buy it, no test drive done and they do not attempt to bargain the price or ask questions on the history of the car.

I kept feeling something is not making sense since the 5AM call. I intentionally did not go with the log book to the meeting.

The guys then call someone and tell him that gari iko sawa and state the price at what I quoted + 100K. So ata mwenye ananunua hayuko hapo. They say they are ready to pay immediately.

I tell them log book iko mbali, they insist on paying and going with the car saying we will initiate the transfer later. Their urgency to buy the car seems too rushed and I get so uncomfortable with the whole transaction. I tell them sioni biashara ikiingiana leo because I am feeling rushed since the 5am call.

I ended up refusing to sell because something wasn't making sense about their behaviour, I felt there was a con scheme going on.

If you know what the catch/con was please nichanue.

Casual Outside is Real! ๐Ÿซช

Yesterday was my day off. Normally, I would have spent it at home doing the weekly cleaning, laundry, cooking, maybe watching a movie or reading a book. Let's say my Meeee time.

But today, I randomly decided to go outside. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I actually put on makeup and styled my hair differently, and when I was done, I understood why God was pleased when He created me. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜‚

I met up with a friend who needed to sort out some bank issues, only for us to be sent from one bank to another almost three times. Anyway, along the way, I interacted with people and even gave out my number๐Ÿ˜‚. The social butterfly in me was apparently just sleeping.

By the time we were done, we were starving, so we went to the food court and got KFC. I genuinely can't remember the last time I went out to eat like that. I'm so used to cooking or ordering food at home that going somewhere just to sit down and enjoy a meal felt different.

After that, we went on a shopping spree, bought clothes and perfume, and I took approximately a million pictures. ๐Ÿ˜‚

And honestly? I had such a good time.

It hit me that my life has basically been work, home, work, home. I haven't really been giving myself opportunities to meet people, enjoy a meal outside, go shopping physically, or just exist somewhere that isn't my workplace or my house.

Okay, I definitely spent more than I intended to, but I enjoyed myself, and for once, I don't regret taking a day to actually live a little.

My love life has also been quite dry lately and staying indoors isn't actually helping my case๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜ญ My last relationship was with a guy I met online(I acknowledge the fact you can meet someone anywhere) and since then then I haven't met anyone.Maybe because both of us stay indoors.

Today reminded me that you can't keep living the exact same routine and expect new experiences to magically find you.

I'm not saying I'm about to become a socialite or start going out every weekend, but maybe I need to stop being such a homebody and put myself out there a little more.

Anyway, today was a reminder that there's a whole world outside my little routine, and apparently, I need to go and investigate. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜‚

Let's see how it goes.

I have a question. We broke up Long ago but we work the same place. After we got "back" twice this year in around June/July. He picked someone at work. So all the three of us work the same place same office. I no longer cry, most of the times I am happy, but there is this layer of I don't know if it's jealousy ama sadness that I feel whenever I see them together. Is it normal or am being a weakling? Also we get picked by bus for work every morning so if they go for sleepover watapanda gari pamoja and I see them

Discussion Childfree people are starting to get really annoying

And before you start whining, I'm one myself and the newcomers in the last 2 years have been annoying and embarrasing as hell. What happened to just vibing out? Ya'll are bitter af.

First of all, there are the wierdos who hate kids. Fucked up individuals fr, won't even waste my time on those. My issue iko na two groups:

  1. The tiktok bandwagoners who are clearly jumping on the Current Thingโ„ข. They have no personality or capacity to think for themselves so they just do whatever Tiktok tells them to do this month. You can see them with their new atheist energy, wanting to debate everyone and thinking not wanting kids makes them superior in some way...you're not the first person to not want kids, chill tf out and stop making it your entire personality. I can't believe I'm using this but a lot of you are just doing it for the attention/clout and will have kids in a few years.

  2. The 4B women and men who are scared of being alone. Man haters etc.. Stop wasting people's time, buy a vibe, go to therapy na utoke soko. Your activism is cute but soko is not the place, hapa we only want happy, healed, wholesome mfrs. Idk what what happened that led to the series of decisions that include being child free but you need to realize you do not want a man/woman, you're just afraid of not having one. Believe it or not, nobody cares if you're 4B, so please, mifupa wachia wenye meno.

In conclusion, this whole thing is a decision, it's not a personality, cult or religion so stop making it one. You don't have to argue about it online. There's no need to humble brag about it in the comments of struggling moms on social media and it 100% doesn't mean that you're better than anyone. People have been CF for decades before you, so lets just chill out and be kind. Stop fighting every parent you come across, parents aren't the enemy and they're actually doing society a huge favour.

Health Question about running.

I just started running recently. It's nice and my running path is about three kilometers two and fro. Sasa the distance is not that big but nahema sana, feels like my lungs is burning.

For experienced runners how long would it take for me to be able to run two and fro without breaking a sweat. Halafu how long nipate mazgwembe ya mguu.
