Hi everyone,
We are relocating from the UK to Saudi Arabia and could use some ground-level advice from parents and expats in the Jeddah/KAEC area.
Our 9-year-old son has been in the UK state system from Reception through Year 4. He will be doing a mid-year transition (or joining near the end of the current academic year). My office is based in KAEC, but to give our family the best balance of schooling and lifestyle, we’re weighing two distinct paths:
- Live in KAEC (Al Waha / Al Murooj) and send him to The World Academy (TWA). The zero-commute lifestyle is very appealing, but I’ve heard mixed reviews from parents regarding academic depth.
- Base the family in North Jeddah (e.g., Obhur) so my son can access top-tier schools in Jeddah (30–40 min bus ride), while I take on the ~1-hour daily commute up to KAEC.
Key Priorities for Our Son:
- Academic Rigor: He is quite studious and strong in math. Because a future relocation back to India (CBSE/ICSE) is a possibility down the road, keeping up a rigorous curriculum is essential so he doesn't face a steep learning curve later.
- Chess & Badminton: He plays both competitively/regularly and is very keen to continue. Strong after-school clubs or competitive programs in these two disciplines are a massive plus.
- Reliable Transport & Late Runs: My wife doesn't drive and I will often return late from KAEC. We need dependable school transport that can handle after-school activity drop-offs, not just the standard afternoon bell.
The Shortlists.
If you have personal experience with these schools, I’d love your take:
- The World Academy (TWA) – KAEC: How is the current academic standard and extracurricular scene? Is the quality-of-life win worth any trade-offs?
- Jeddah Prep and Grammar School (JPGS): I’ve heard great things about their British curriculum rigor, plus an active chess and badminton scene. How has your experience been?
- British International School Jeddah (BISJ): Exceptional campus on paper, but how does day-to-day student life, academic pressure, and community culture feel?
- American International School Jeddah (AISJ): Heard solid general feedback, though not sure how smoothly a British-to-American curriculum transition works at age 9, or if it fits our long-term goals.
A Few Specific Questions for the Community:
- School Transport & Late Runs: I’ve heard some schools don’t run in-house buses, or that buses only operate at standard dismissal. Do private operators like SWVL or local transport companies cover Obhur? Do any provide scheduled late runs after sports clubs?
- Transport Budget: What should we realistically budget monthly/annually for private or shared school transport from North Jeddah?
- Alternative Neighborhoods: Aside from Obhur, is there another residential area or family-friendly compound in North Jeddah that offers quick access to the Madinah Highway heading north, while keeping school commutes around 20–30 minutes?
Any insights, recent parent reviews, or practical commuting tips would be massively appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
