Love the name James, but worried about the nickname Jamie with our surname
We're deciding on a name for our newborn son. I love the name James. I've honestly never met a James who wasn't a solid, stand-up guy.
My only concern is that my wife and his two older sisters want to call him Jamie as a nickname.
I don't think that's a problem in itself, but our surname sounds quite feminine, and I actually got teased about it growing up, so I'm probably more conscious of this than most.
I worry that combining a unisex nickname with a feminine-sounding surname could make him a target for bullying, especially if his older sisters take the nn "Jamie" to school and influence younger kids. Then that nickname could end up sticking throughout his school years.
Would love to hear from guys named James, especially if your older sibling/siblings calls you Jamie. Did it ever bother you growing up or were you totally fine with it? How would you feel if you had a feminine surname and were getting called Jamie?
James is up there as my first name choice, but would you still go with James in our situation? Let me know if I'm overthinking it.
