RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Ambivalent About Advice I called it! JNMIL reached out

So a little backstory (might be on my profile I don’t know) but my JNMIL is married to registered Sex offender who molested a child years ago. They lied and gaslit my husband and his sister into this alternate version of events - he was sleepwalking and it was an accident. Whatever - we got the original police report and know the truth now. We’ve been NC for over a decade now.

Recently our state removed 20,000 Sex offender from the registry including my step father in law and when I read the article I was like “she’ll be reaching out soon to rewrite history” and last night the text came

Like he’s still a monster! He still did it! He isn’t suddenly innocent I don’t care what they hear at their pedo supporting church.

I told my husband he’s free to talk to her, it’s his mom but under no circumstances is she to get info on our kids or where we live. She’ll never lay eyes on my children again

She’s just so predictable and sad

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Ambivalent About Advice I think my MIL assumed she was reconciled with DH and it’s ruining our relationships with SIL’s

We have been no contact with MIL for a couple of years now. I have posted here several times. She flew off the handle when my son was a newborn because we asked her not to kiss him (NICU baby, almost died) and basically just went bat shit crazy and said he was dead to her and a bunch of other terrible stuff. We have maintained a relationship with 2/3 of his sisters despite no relationship with MIL / FIL / other SIL.

My husband’s grandmother passed away about a month ago and after waffling about it he chose to go to the funeral. It was hours out of town so myself and our son did not attend. After arriving his mom immediately cornered him and was like “oh your grandmother hoped this would happen!” (What??? That she would die? Just because he came to a funeral doesn’t mean you’re reconciled that’s not what’s happening.) she basically just kept cornering my husband the entire time and just kept saying stupid things like that. He went to the men’s room and she literally waited outside the bathroom for him so he wouldn’t be able to just pay his respects and leave!

She said that she hopes she can have a relationship with him and our son. Pretended the entire time like I don’t exist. Invited him and our son to Thanksgiving (we’re Canadian so this past weekend). He felt very angry because she kept doing that, saying “you and child, you and child” acting like he wasn’t even married.

Anyways so this past weekend his one sister texted him and said I hope you come to Thanksgiving, everyone will be here and you can see them. He did not respond or Go. He has not reconciled at all with his mom or the SIL that cut us off when we went NC with MIL. She’s never even apologized. Also it was at MIL’s house which is not a happy place for him as the last time he was there she screamed at him for 35 mins straight.

So now the two sisters that we did still keep in contact with have gone cold. The one didn’t even bother telling us she was in town. I suspect it’s because MIL assumed that they were good and he didn’t come to thanksgiving with our son so they’re pissed. They’re literally the most toxic family in the world. I’m the type of person that would confront about this, but my husband is sort of lax. Just venting my MIL is such a matriarch and has her flying monkeys it’s so frustrating.

SUCCESS! ✌ Win! I sent my MIL the text with how she’s been hurtful the last few months of postpartum.

Long time lurker here! My MIL is honestly not a just no, she’s great but I feel like everything can change once babies arrive. I had my baby girl September 2025 and my MIL was a great support unlike my mom who is truly a Just No. We were triple feeding at the beginning so my MIL got to bottle feed a bit and obviously the potato newborns let everyone hold them. Everything was pretty good until my baby got older. We weren’t bottle feeding anymore cause she refused and was exclusively on boob, so my MIL would make little comments about “oh maybe mom will let me give you a bottle” or “I wish I could feed her.” I ignored this and figured it was probably hard not getting to do the bottle feeding like she did at the beginning.

Also want to give some backstory that my husband’s sister, husband, and three kids all live at my in laws and my MIL is definitelyyy a primary caregiver to them. I think she brings some of these expectations to her relationship with my daughter (even though we live in a different state for one, but also do not need a co parent)

Anyways. The last few months of my daughter’s first year she is very attached to me and big stranger danger feels. Which is NORMAL.
But my MIL got super butthurt that my daughter is more selective and won’t just let anyone hold her anymore. Hello, she’s not a newborn. So there came a lot more passive sad comments about her attachment to me, making it seem like it’s a bad thing or framing it as her wanting to “help.” For instance, my daughter was fussing in her stroller so I put her in our sling wrap and she was fine, and my MIL looked at me so sadly and said “I wish I would hold her FOR you.” I just laughed it off and said “I LIKE getting to wear her and feel close to her.”

So the comments were adding up every visit and just making me feel like my attachment with my daughter is an obstacle to her relationship.
There was even a couple jabs hinting my race wasn’t enough?
I’m half Mexican so my daughter is a quarter. There’s been a couple instances where my MIL has “joked” she’s more Mexican than me because she actually lived in Mexico as a child or that my daughter is “more like an 1/8” with a smirk. I’m really not sure the intent behind these. I think they come from a place to be hurtful or diminish my connection with my daughter that she doesn’t share? My daughter really looks like my husband so I feel like any trait or interest that comes from me, my MIL tries to diminish or tie to her side.

I really don’t think she has had bad intent, just gets to play mommy with my nieces and nephew so expected that same level of needing and closeness with my daughter. And probably subconsciously thinks diminishing my attachment will help grow hers. My husband agreed, fully supports my attachment with my daughter, and encouraged me to share with his mom so we can move forward in a better way.

Last night I sent the text I’d been sitting on for a bit and just wanted to express everything I was feeling:

Me: Hi MIL,
There’s some thoughts I’ve been sitting with for a while but wasn’t sure how to share. I wrote it out, but I wanted to give you a heads-up before sending it so it doesn’t come completely out of the blue and want to make sure it’s a good time.

MIL: It’s a good time. I’ve been feeling that something is off for a little while and would love to have it cleared up.

Me: The last few visits, I’ve felt like I’ve needed to keep my guard up a little because it feels like as LO’s gotten older, there’s been comments about her attachment to me that have made me feel uncomfortable. It feels like there’s a subtle tone almost lamenting or putting down how close she is to me. It makes me feel like my bond with her is an obstacle for you, which makes our attachment a bad thing. DH and I love and celebrate how close LO and I are, and I don’t want to feel like I need to apologize for something we see as a good thing.

When you visit I’ve tried really hard to make sure you get to be a part of the “fun” baby stuff like bathtime and things like that, but sometimes it feels even all that isn’t enough for what you want your relationship with LO to be. And that hurts cause I do try really hard to make you feel involved.
I know how involved you are in SIL’s kids’ lives, and I think naturally when you live with someone and are part of their day to day from literally day 1, that relationship is going to look different than your relationship with your grandchild that lives in a different state or even just not the same home.
I know you love her and want to feel close to her, and I want that for you, too. I just think it’s okay for that relationship to look different and grow in its own way.

Something else that’s been bothering me is the comments about me not being Mexican enough. When you joked that you were more Mexican than me and in a different instance commented that LO wasn’t even a quarter Mexican but “more like an 1/8,” with a smirk I was left wondering what you meant by those comments. They’ve stuck with me in a hurtful way..

With everything I know you probably didn’t intend it that way, and I want you to have a beautiful relationship with LO. I want us to be able to enjoy her together without any underlying competition or feeling like anyone needs to prove their place in her life.
These things have been weighing on me more than I’ve probably let on, and I don’t want to keep these feelings to myself. I care about you and our relationship, and I didn’t want to let this hurt build up without being honest with you about it. ♥️

MIL: Thank you for sending your thoughts and feelings. How about if I sit with them overnight and respond tomorrow? Please know that I love you so much, and want to be a positive influence in your life, your marriage and your relationship with your beautiful daughter.
I am over the moon happy that you feel comfortable enough to share your concerns with me. I know we will work things out.

So we’ll see how tomorrow goes, but I’m proud of myself for sending it and am hopeful we can move forward!

Am I Overreacting? MIL doesn’t respect boundaries while babysitting

Am I being crazy?

My son is 20 months old. I work from home and am never away from him, he is the light of my world and my only priority; but with other things in our lives lately, there has been a lot of pressure and stress on me and I’ve been really burnt out.

My partner wanted to do something nice for me/us, so he booked a trip for two nights to a spa a few hours away, like an early bday thing for me. He asked MIL if she would be able to come stay with our son at our place for those two nights.

I was a little hesitant, but she has babysat in the past, so I was trying to lean in and get used to the idea of trusting. I’ve never left him with someone for longer than a few hours, and always with family. I didn’t really want to, but I also thought it will be good for us so I was opening my mind to it.

Then my partner says his mom agreed and then she asked if her boyfriend could come. I was like, this changes things. Now it isn’t just MIL, it’s also a man I barely know in my house with my child when I am not there. I was not comfortable and my partner and I talked about my discomfort extensively. He said “he’s not going to be alone with (boyfriend), my mom will be there the whole time.” And I said, “yeah? So your mom won’t leave our son alone with boyfriend in any circumstance? Not to go take a shower? To take the dogs out? She won’t leave our son in the supervision of a man who is basically a stranger to us, PERIOD?”

My partner assured me that he had a conversation with his mom and that he made it clear that it was okay if he was there, but our son was to be in her care, exclusively, the entire time.

I was still uncomfortable, but I didn’t want to be that person who can’t trust their partner to lead. So I again leaned in to trusting because he wanted to and he was trusting.

Fast forward, we leave on the trip. On the way there, I text to check in on how our son is doing. My messages are not going through to MIL- just not being delivered, as if her phone is off. An hour and a half goes by, and my messages are still undelivered to her phone. Now I’m getting anxious.

We try calling. Straight to voicemail. Finally I track down boyfriend’s number from my partner’s brother and we call him. He tells MIL we’re trying to get in touch with her. Apparently her phone was on DND. Why?!

So after my partner talks to his mom, I text her saying “please leave your phone on because I’m really anxious being away from (my son) and I might want to check in from time to time 🙏🏻”
She’s like “yes I totally understand.”

We go out for dinner that night. Around my son’s bedtime I text to check in that everything went all right. She responds that all went well and she’s just taking the dogs out. I say to my partner, why is your mom taking the dogs out and leaving our son alone with boyfriend? You told me you made it clear to her that our son was not to be left alone with him because he’s like, a complete stranger to us?!

He says he did explain that to his mom. He says he’ll talk to her.

Her phone is again on DND. He says he’ll talk to her in the morning.

I trust him to do so.

The last morning of our trip rolls around, and in conversation with MIL when checking in on my son, it becomes clear to me that she has been regularly leaving my son in her boyfriend’s supervision to walk the dogs, shower, etc.

I tell my partner and ask him, did you not talk to your mom about this again to clarify that this is NOT to be happening? He says he forgot.

I have been trying to get through to her phone regarding some texts she sent me about my dog being sick, and her phone is on DND AGAIN.

I’m feeling so pissed and like my trust just feels majorly violated. Why are you leaving my son alone with a man I don’t know?! Like why on earth would you do that? And why are you constantly turning your phone on DND so I can’t even get through to you when I am away from my child for the first time ever?

I just feel like these are such inconsiderate (AT BEST) behaviours, just super disrespectful and violating. Am I overreacting?

I feel like I just don’t trust her anymore and will definitely not be doing anything like this again.

Am I Overreacting? Am I overreacting?

I told my mom that I was pregnant fairly early on (around 6 weeks) and asked both of my parents not to tell anyone yet as I wanted to wait until the 2nd trimester. Only a few days later, on a call with my mom she said she told my uncle about it (who my family is very close to, and who I would have liked to tell myself). When I got upset about this, she said “well Dad also told all of our friends” to shift the blame. I’m equally annoyed at both of them for this.

My uncle also accidentally told another family member (which I also blame my mom for, because he wouldn’t have known so early if it wasn’t for her).

I’ve had a hard time letting this go because this is my first pregnancy and the first trimester can be very hard and scary and I was so excited to share the news once I felt comfortable and really felt like she took something from me. She doesn’t seem to really be sorry and anytime I bring it up she says I need to get over it and “it was so long ago” (I’m only 17 weeks so it feels like it is still timely to me).

Should I stop bringing this up with her? I’m still hurt by it because she explicitly ignored my wishes and now seems to be disregarding my feelings about it.

UPDATE - Ambivalent About Advice UPDATE: MIL finally responded, and somehow I’m even more irritated. Am I overreacting?

I decided to remain no contact until my husband asked her to apologize in June.

For those who didn’t see my previous post, I had sent her a warm message thanking her for my birthday card, briefly addressing how her silence following my response to her apology card in June had left things feeling unfinished, and expressing that I wanted us to move forward rather than continue revisiting the past.

After two days, she finally responded:

“Sorry I’m so late responding. Yes, I received your message and think I understand where you were coming from. I really didn’t feel like I needed to respond back. I too would like to move forward! I hate the awkwardness.”

And somehow, I think I’m more irritated by her response than I was by the silence.

It’s specifically the “I really didn’t feel like I needed to respond back” that rubbed me the wrong way. I had been vulnerable, warm, and intentional about extending an olive branch, despite having plenty of reasons not to. I wasn’t expecting a lengthy apology or some grand gesture. I just wanted acknowledgment that she’d heard and understood me.

To me, her response felt dismissive, almost as though she didn’t understand why acknowledging my message mattered in the first place. And saying she hates the awkwardness doesn’t really address what caused it.

My husband understands why I’m bothered, although he suggested she may have overthought my original message or simply not known how to respond. I can acknowledge that’s possible, but it doesn’t change how her actual response landed with me.

At this point, I feel like I’ve done more than enough to try to repair the relationship. Someone on my previous post suggested gray rocking, and honestly, I think that’s the most I’m willing to offer going forward. I can be polite and cordial when necessary, but I have no desire for a meaningful relationship.

I’m not interested in preventing my husband from having a relationship with his parents, and I’m not saying I’ll never be in the same room as her. But I’m also not comfortable welcoming them into our home or pretending everything is fine simply because she says she wants to move forward.

I’m genuinely curious whether I’m reading too much into her wording. Does her response seem dismissive to anyone else, or am I allowing my frustration with the history of our relationship to influence how I’m interpreting it?

And for those who suggested gray rocking on my previous post, I’d love to hear how that has worked for you in practice

New User 👋 Who would go to this?!

My MIL planned my FIL’s 75th birthday party two states away directly during my son’s nap time. I said I would leave him home to be with my father so my husband & I and our 4 year old can make the 5 hr trip and engage in the 11am-2pm brunch she setup. She has reached out 6 more times and guilt tripped my husband into bringing my son anyways even though I don’t find this beneficial for a newly turned two year old to drive 5 hrs just to take a nap.

As a background, my MIL heavily oversteps boundaries, considers when I say “no” to her questions as something she can change (she calls it the squeaky wheel- she keeps squeaking until she gets what she wants) and I constantly did sleepovers and trips with my sons for years and I can’t handle it anymore. I’m actually ready to divorce my husband because he only ever does what’s best for his mom.

Some more background- we all had the stomach bug right before Easter this year and I hoped his family would say “stay home and feel better!” Nope, I got a text saying “make sure you get here early as it’s going to rain”- brought my one year old in a sling where he clearly felt terrible ALL DAY but I get manipulated constantly “what if it’s my grandparents last Easter”? Meanwhile my entire young motherhood experience is so stressful and managing other peoples feelings instead of mine and my young children.

Labor Day weekend I had been sick and my MIL called my husband to come to our home and hop in the car with them (and leave me home) so she could help drive my husband and kids to sleepover her house. She’s also at our house regardless every other week for a full 8hr day - and I pay for full time daycare. It’s tricky because I want them to see their grandparents but being in my home and overstaying your parents welcome and knowing I’ll be asked again to go to CT gets me all stressed out!

I did 10 trips to their state the year my first son was born and I’ve been slowly rolling out the boundaries as I own my own small business and am a mom of two young boys but I can’t handle this woman stepping on my toes and my husband only doing what’s best for her.

I can’t figure out if I’m ranting at this point or asking for advice- I went to a therapist when I was last pregnant because of her and she just told me simply to say no to invites but it’s becoming a huge issue where my husband says I’m a problem and it’s not a big deal for his parents to see his children.

Anyone Else? MIL said she’s showed up enough for her granddaughter.

My oldest daughter is 8. Since she was 3, she has had a few extracurriculars that included her grandma showing up for her. Whether it was a dance recital or a musical theater show, she’d occasionally go. Everything was closer to her, so it wasn’t hard for us or her.

We moved 20 min away and there’s a freeway that will get me to her or her to me. And she doesn’t drive freeways. She’s 60, but has never driven a freeway, even at 20. She’s afraid of a lot of things, freeways are one of those things.

Anyway, it upset me that she said she’s shown up for my daughter enough. But I just don’t think that’s relevant for my daughter. My kid remembers NOW who is showing up for her NOW and that’s building her self confidence: The fact that she can count on her family.

Now my mil is married to my husband’s dad. My FIL never shows up for his grandkids. One reason is because he talks a lot of crap on his own ethnicity and the fact that we live in a dominantly white, well off area, he feels inferior. That’s the best way I can put it. I’ve noticed through the years when he sees a lot of white people in wealthy areas, he feels uncomfortable. I can’t remember the last time he showed up for my daughter other than the first time where he looked around and saw who he saw and never went again. And I’ve noticed he is a little bit of a bully towards her in the sense that instead of building her up, he “teases” her. His logic is he’s preparing her for the real world, but what I see is her feeling like if her grandpa is making fun of her for something, then a kid at school does too, then it must be true.

My husband says his dad never really showed up for him or his siblings and he didn’t even go to his daughter’s birth because he “had to go to work.”

He’s the kind of guy that doesn’t want to feel like he’s idling around, but I’d hate to be my MIL.

After my husband said this to me, I feel like I shouldn’t invite them to anything anymore. I want to just watch their efforts, if any.

I have the opposite in my husband. He shows up. He’ll move things around with work. But I’m starting to realize that my husband doesn’t expect much from his dad. He loves and respects the guy, as he is a good guy, but he’s just the kid of guy who wants to just be left alone to work or spend hours at Home Depot. He’s not the “I’m always on your side” kind of guy.

It’s heartbreaking. But all I can do from now on is just watch them and their efforts or lack thereof.

Advice Wanted How to establish boundaries with MIL whom you rely on for childcare?

Hi all, I've lurked on this sub for some time now and getting to a point where I desperately need advice specific to my situation. I'm having trouble figuring out how to establish boundaries with my MIL whom I rely on/need help from.

For background, my MIL will give the silent treatment (editing to add, often accompanied with passive-aggressive commentary) while in my house and watching my children. If/when we establish boundaries, she makes it incredibly awkward/uncomfortable for me. If I listed everything she's done/said to me over the years, I'd be here all day. But just know, she has no self awareness, and habitually inserts unsolicited advice/opinions when it comes to my kids or just our lives in general. I have a hard time standing up for myself and she drones on and on about topics I disagree with or have no interest in (especially political beliefs). I know this is a "Me" problem that I need to fix, as she's almost 80 and won't change at this point.

The issue is, I need her help with my kids occasionally, as my kids (5 & 2) are comfortable with her, she is retired and lives right up the road, and will come at the drop of a hat if needed. My parents live an hour away and still work 9-5. No siblings or other people we can rely on are nearby.

On a separate note, despite seeing us often, and despite us taking her on our vacations (mostly for a sitter so my husband and I can get out alone occasionally), she expects to come everywhere with us - trick or treating, Thanksgiving - and caused a fight this summer when she wasn't invited to Mother's Day or Father's Day (where we did just daytrips with just my husband, me, and the kids). Last year we didn't go to Christmas at my SIL's (her daughter) because we traveled Christmas Eve and it was just too much for us 2 days in a row. She told me she was offended she wasn't invited to my brother's son's first birthday party. These are just a few examples. And I'll note she has 2 other children, one of whom doesn't speak to her, and the other who knows she's the worst but deals with it like we do. (Personally, if she was my mom, I would cut her off).

She is widowed, lives in a big house that needs maintenance (ie, my husband), and my husband would never just cut her off -- however he does get really upset on my behalf, and sticks up for me and has been vocal with her in the past, but she takes it out on me (silent treatment or just overtly blaming me) so I often tell my husband not to say anything just to keep the peace. But this is really starting to ruin my inner peace.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Advice Wanted Are sit downs worth it?

Ofc MIL is trying to get my fiancé to go to her house and talk it out, but he said no that I should be included. I let him know that I will be bringing a paper with every single thing she's done that's been hurtful AND I will be bringing her a copy of some chart that explains an enmeshed family. (I have realized through reddit and just searching her behavior that this is the dynamic of her household).

This is literally the only way I can move forward. Apologize for all your wrongs and actively work out of this awful family dynamic.

Also my partner finally stood up to her and it was such a weight lifted off me. To finally feel like my partner was on my side and I was not going to be harassed by her any longer.

Anyways, have you done a sit down before? Did anything change? Is it worth it?

EDIT: I thought being able to lay it all out would help fix things. All the replies have me scared about it now 😭 lol. We haven't agreed to anything yet.

Advice Wanted MIL threw my family out of the house with no warning.

I'm dealing with a major problem with my MIL, and to be honest I think it might end my marriage. I'd love some advice from someone that's gone through something like this.

My MIL invited us to live with her a few months ago. Everything was fine. She has a reputation for being frosty and has been really nasty to other people. I, stupidly, thought we were on good terms and it would be fine.

While living there, MIL started to get really entitled about making decisions regarding my daughter, particularly around screen time. MIL was told (by me) that she is not welcome to make choices about how my daughter is raised. MIL flipped a 180 and three days after that conversation, blew up and screamed at me and told me to get out right then, that instant. I have been living in a hotel room since. It was a wildly vitriolic tantrum, too, full of accusations about me abusing my wife (absolutely untrue). This has severely damaged my ability to do my job (work from home) as well as massively impacted our finances, to the point that we will likely have to put off buying a home for several more years.

Well, my wife isn't standing up to MIL. We are moving her and my daughter out of that house and into a new apartment with me this weekend. When I try to talk to my wife about it, she keeps admitting that what MIL did was wrong, but also insists that we not break contact, and that MIL should still get to visit my daughter. I want no contact between MIL and my daughter whatsoever. My wife is a massive people pleaser and MIL, notably, has no close friends and is long since divorced because of her behavior.

I don't know what to do. I know that if I press the issue, it just makes me the bad guy, but I also can't let my daughter be around that psycho. This came out of nowhere. She has absolutely not stood with me on this.

What should I do?

Am I Overreacting? MIL gets physical, but DH says it is just her culture

Trigger ⚠️ Warning: Physical Violence

I've wondered this for a couple of years, but I haven't had a safe place to ask. I wanted to find a cultural forum, but I couldn't find anything where this question fits. So, I decided to see whether or not this might be the proper forum.

My MIL grew up outside of San Juan, PR, but she moved to the Continental US over 55 years ago. When I am at my in-laws' house and I speak to my MIL (when we are standing up), she shakes, darts towards me, grabs my hands extremely hard (I have arthritis in my hands), and slaps me on the arms and shoulders so hard that she has left bruises more than once. From what I know, she only does this to my mother and me, especially not to her latin friends or family members.

The last time she left dark bruises, my husband excused her behavior, stating that it is just her culture. I was raised around my Sicilian and German relatives, so I don't have first hand knowledge of anyone ever doing this. Has anyone else experienced this? The last time she left bruises, they were so large that she realized she couldn't pretend she didn't hit me too hard, and she slowed for a while. I usually pull away from her as she starts thwarting towards me, and I have even told her not to hit or grab me. She smirks and most of the time she stops once I loudly call her out on it.

I visited PR, and the people could not be more lovely. I immediately felt at home, and everyone thought that I was a local. Besides DH's wonderful aunt constantly trying to feed me sweets, I experienced no aggression from anyone. I have trouble believing that this issue is cultural. According to my internet research, her aggressive behavior has nothing to do with culture! She has never shown shame, and she has done this in front of a few other people. I didn't realize that others noticed until my stepdaughter (actually DH's former stepdaughter), to whom I am extremely close, expressed how upsetting it was to her, and how violent it looks.

I live very close to my in-laws, so I have found it difficult to avoid attending events or simply visiting their house. Luckily, I currently have a job where I have to work a great deal of holidays, and I now beg for jobs on dates where I may feel like I will be obligated to visit their house.

I have pretended my reason for not going to their house actually has to do with another family member of theirs, but my real reason I don't go over there anymore is because of her violence towards me. Don't get me wrong, the other family member is an obnoxious prick, but I don't actually fear him like I do my MIL. The last time I was at her house, I stayed outside. She chased me around my car, while I walked backwards for over 10 minutes, trying to grab me. I haven't been to their house since because I don't like people to hit me and I don't like people to grab me!

  • How do you deal with this behavior?

  • Has anyone ever known women from her culture to do this?

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ NO Advice Wanted Don’t want my help with your taxes, MIL? Enjoy your penalty!

Have to keep things a tiny bit vague for legal reasons. I used to manage my MIL’s financial affairs because she’s getting on in years (in her 80s now) and frankly she was never good at things like record keeping. One thing she never budged on was that she’d used the same tax preparer for 20 years, and wouldn’t hear any offers of other companies or people. (This was not a big company, just some guy working out of his home.) He’d always make mistakes, to the point that she just considered paying penalties part of regular tax paying.

Before MIL moved out in a huff, I finally convinced her to just use a tax program since her situation was not complex. Got it done quickly and with no late penalties or issues. But after she moved out, she decided she’d show me, and went back to the tax guy the past couple years.

She just got a letter from the IRS showing a substantial problem. I looked over the letter and her tax return and immediately saw the cause of the issue. Oh well, guess she sure showed me who’s boss. I’m helping her find representation now to work things out. She asked if I could help with the next year’s taxes and I told her to pound sand.

Give It To Me Straight Am I overreacting

Okay so I know I’m pp and breastfeeding so maybe my hormones are making me insane BUT. When I was pregnant I had a fine relationship with my IL until.. I didn’t. So here’s a quick breakdown of things that have bothered me

My MIL bought a nursery glider for her house before we had even truly announced our pregnancy to everyone. She posted on her Snapchat story gigi is ready

She made a Facebook post for my husbands bday that included photos from our gender reveal and saying “can’t wait until July🍼👶” in the post before we announced our pregnancy on Facebook ourselves

  1. She brought a display of onesies to hang at my shower. They all said “I love dad” “daddies little buddy” “daddies number one guy” and one that read “grandma and grandpa love me” absolutely nothing about mom

  2. When I was 3 weeks pp his family planned to take 5 generation photos that I was not included in. I had to take the picture of them.

  3. When I was 3 weeks PP my MIL got a tattoo representing my son.

My biggest issue is even with ALL of this my SO has said this is all out of love. She just loves him so much and is so excited. I get that. I do. But like.. is this too much? Or am I just hormonal. My family would neverrrrr do any of this so it feels really off to me.

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Advice Wanted Are your pants not fitting yet?

Is this a normal question to ask when someone is pregnant? My MIL asked me this when we told her I was pregnant at 6 weeks, and she just asked again over a video call at 11 weeks? I understand asking if I have a bump yet, but I find asking if my pants don’t fit so early on a bit odd.

She’s the only person who has asked me this, but she has a history of bringing up my weight and eating habits, so I wonder if she’s going to bring up my weight a lot during my pregnancy.

I’ve always been slim, but in the 7 years that she’s known me I’ve filled out & had to go up a couple sizes. Early on, she’d tell my now husband “I can’t believe she is so tiny!” But in recent years she has said things like, “are you worried your wedding dress won’t fit?” (which she asked twice) and “did you two gain any weight during your honeymoon?” When she complimented my ski pants one time, I said “thanks they’re too small though haha I have to wear them unbuttoned. I need a bigger size” she said “oh yes we all gain extra weight in our midsection sometimes”. Maybe she was trying to reassure me, but I just meant that I bought the wrong size. So I said “oh I’m happy with my weight right now, these have always been too small.” And she replied “I didn’t mean it like that!” And then started talking about how her friend was too skinny. Another time she told her niece “OP is a snacker” when I offered them an appy before dinner, and then other times she’s commented on my food choices saying “you’re not going to want to add that much salt when you’re 50 hah!” And “you really like your sugar?” “Do you have a sweet tooth?” I also have a pretty specific diet due to dietary restrictions, but I don’t always follow it perfectly. When she sees me eating something she thinks I’m not supposed to, she’ll say “I thought you couldn’t eat fried foods?” “Doesn’t chocolate upset your stomach?” Another time she asked “are you doing a better job of following your diet?” Also, she recently asked me what my pregnancy cravings were and I said “lemons and oranges! I can’t get enough” and she replied “but that’s Tarte? You can’t have Tarte I thought?” And when I told her I’ve been fine with it and it seems to be a common pregnancy craving she said “I’ve never heard of that”.

Weirdly enough when we’ve stayed at her house, she’s made things that I’m not supposed to have like spicy chilli when she knows I can’t have spicy food (or so I thought).

Advice Wanted MIL wants to follow us abroad

My husband and I have two kids and have lived just a few minutes’ drive from his mother and stepdad’s house for 10 years. We always saw my MIL 1–3 times a week because she insisted on seeing our kids that often, and we were bad at saying no. I have always had a super rough relationship with her and would rarely be seeing her if it weren’t for my kids and not wanting to get in the way of them seeing their grandma.

During COVID shutdowns, we moved to where my family lives (a 3-hour flight away) and rented a house with my brother because I was struggling with depression at the time. It was super helpful to have my brother around a lot while he was doing college remotely. We moved back after 10 months, but during that time my MIL came to visit once a month, and it was always so stressful. She was also reaching out to us very emotionally between visits.

About a year ago, the opportunity arose for us to move abroad, which has been a dream of ours. So we moved to a European country 3 months ago with an open mind about whether it would be short-term or long-term.

A week before our move date, my MIL was crying on the phone to my husband about how unhappy she is with her life, how the only thing she has is our kids, and how desperate she is to keep them near. She then proceeded to send him several long texts about this in the days that followed.

She already came to visit us a month ago and is talking about coming again in a few weeks. She sends texts to my husband all day, every day, even when he’s not responsive. She texts me if he’s not responding enough. She even started texting MY best friend all of this emotional stuff about her feelings regarding my husband not being a kid anymore, which I obviously got super upset about. My husband told her not to text my friends.

My MIL has lived in the same house in the US since before my husband was born. Just yesterday, she was texting my husband about how his stepdad finally agreed that they could start making plans to move to the country neighboring ours because she’s more familiar with the language there, and it’s only a 2-hour flight from us.

On the one hand, I feel really anxious about this because I was SO looking forward to only seeing her 1–2 times a year now that we’re so far away. I know she’d end up trying to come once a month and expecting us to visit her, and I really don’t want her to move to a whole new country just to be closer to us.
But I also feel terrible for potentially discouraging more of a relationship between my kids and their grandma because they love spending time with her. I also feel like I can’t tell her not to move somewhere. I got the sense that my husband didn’t care either way if she moved closer or not.

I don’t know if we just need to be better at setting boundaries if she moves closer? I had just felt so much relief at not having to think about the dynamic with her and boundary setting so frequently anymore. I could really use any thoughts or advice.

Advice Wanted MIL interactions with my baby

Apologies for editing- posting from my phone while baby is napping on me.
To start, my MIL has always been annoying and stubborn (she wants to control everything) so I don’t even interact with her directly. Luckily she lives 3h flight away and we don’t see her very often. Now that we have a baby of course she will constantly push for additional visits but I honestly don’t think I can survive any more than we had.

First time she saw our baby was 2 weeks after I have given birth (while complaining everyday that its taking too long). She sent my husband several pictures of gifts SHE received from colleagues and friends for becoming a grandmother (???) while I was still in the hospital and yet brought 0 gifts for me. I misunderstood first that bracelet with my baby’s name was for me only to be told immediately its actually for the baby (as if I am going to let baby wear a bracelet). She normally always buys too many gifts for everyone even if there is no real occasion so it was a bit strange not to get anything. From first moments of meeting the baby she started saying that they must learn to speak her native language that I do not speak, when smarter thing to do at this stage would be to befriend me so that I encourage baby to learn once they are older instead of pissing me off with these comments so early.
She offered 0 help, during the visit not even held the door when we tried to get out with the pram. I also overheard her complaining in her language that she got no home cooked food during her stay. I in return to this lovely treatment never let her hold my baby or take any pictures.
Last weekend we flew to see them and extended family for few days now that baby is 5 months (only because that’s what my husband wanted for his birthday). I knew its going to be bad but it was just so much worse than I imagined.
We arrived after midnight and baby was very upset and crying non stop so when we walked in to their house I covered baby’s view of them standing with baloons and stayed in a quiet area to settle to sleep.
In the morning as soon as we got up MIL looked like she is about to launch to grab my baby so I tried to keep a distance while baby tries to understand where we are but she kept being in her face and visibly struggling to stop herself from snatching baby from me. With few minutes she actually grabs and pulls the baby out of my hands so I had to tell her to stop and calm down.
When baby was introduced to great grandma who understandably is old and barely walking, I went to lift the baby towards her arms MIL stopped the video she was making not to include me and said “baby can be held by mama only” passive aggressively. Did she think its her role to hold the baby in this situation??

For the remaining time we were there she kept repeating “papa” or “where is papa?” to baby that doesn’t speak yet non stop. I am talking all day everyday. Then at some point she tries to teach baby to say short version of my first name (that I don’t even like that she uses). I was shocked and questioned it immediately so she very passive aggressively repeated mama couple of times but you could see its physically painful for her to refer to me as mama.
One day when constant papa papa got on my nerves I asked does this child have a mother? Or just papa and “my first name”. She commented something in her language that I understood as “hate” and added a few passive aggressive mama together with my husband I found this performance irritating so I asked them to stop with this. From that point she for some reason started following me everywhere when it was clear that I was angry. If I find a quiet corner and read a book to baby she is there and starts reading louder than me- I leave. Baby falls asleep on me in the garden she comes to stare at sleeping baby way too close for my liking.
When I was spoon feeding baby she kept distracting by repeating “papa” again so I turned around and said
I hope papa is the name for avocado in your language and my husband said its actually a name for baby food but we all know why she was saying it.

Important to add that she is an English teacher for primary school kids her level of English is shockingly bad but obviously she can speak just chooses not to because she wants to make me learn her language.
She didn’t ask me any questions entire stay and kept asking my husband about paediatricians advice something he has no clue about. Every time I would ask to him to translate (he knows that he has to but doesn’t bother sometimes which caused a lot of arguments).

Baby didn’t feel well at some points and I was trying to understand what’s wrong as baby became visibly upset so she repeated in baby’s face “are you happy?” non stop and I kept saying something is wrong she is not feeling well thinking she would care about it but received no response. I repeated it again very assertively and slowly to get a response and she just looked blankly at me. Stood up and started spraying disinfectant around the room. My husband told her off for that. Is she not capable of comprehending anything but clapping and repeating same 3 words all day? Or is she so selfish that in this situation she fought how do I protect myself from any potential illness?

On the last day of our stay when I had enough we went for a walk and husband and MIL decided to walk behind me even though I had baby in the carrier and walking very slowly. In general I find that no matter how wide the pavement is his whole family never walks together and it drives me nuts. I turned around and asked if they are allergic to walking together and she found it very funny (?) and responded in English for the first time on this trip so I said “oh so we know how to speak English?” She proudly said yes and I said well let’s keep it that way then.

While I understand that it would be better not to react to her attempts to irritate me I simply can’t and doing my best to stay cool and put unacceptable behaviour in check, which is working to some extent. I know my husband is the one that needs to step up and he has been told many times. I would appreciate more advice on how to survive this madness when all I wanted is a baby bubble full of joy and happiness…

Am I Overreacting? MIL narrates her life to us, texts almost daily

Maybe if I liked my MIL and she wasn’t so negative and passive aggressive I wouldn’t care about this… I want to know if this is a normal dynamic. I’m going to assume it’s not because that’s what my friends have told me.
My husband and I have a group chat with his mom. It’s just us 3. She texts us almost daily. She will ask us what our plans are every weekend. Asking about our plans all the time isn’t because she’s interested or so joyful that we’re out having fun. I’ve known her for 10 years- it’s because she is nosy and wants to keep tabs. She’s also miserable with her life so us going out or just me going out with my friends secretly makes her insecure. She will always make comments about me always doing something. “Oh you’re just always out with your friends” or “wow you’re staying in tonight? That’s unheard of!” She’s very passive aggressive. Keep in mind that we don’t have kids, so hubby and I do a lot together or I go out with my friends a lot.

She narrates her life to us. If she’s going out with her boyfriend, she will tell us what they’re doing and when. If she’s going out with the 1 friend that she does have, she will let us know and tell us what they’re doing. If she has her grandkids over, she has to tell us. If grandkids are sleeping over, she has to tell us. She takes selfies of herself if she’s going out to a wedding and sends them to us. She tells us what she’s made for dinner. It’s literally everything. She doesn’t have much of a life and lives alone, so I’ve tried to be sympathetic that she’s lonely… however, she constantly talks about how she’s NOT lonely and how independent she is, which tells me the opposite is probably true. The thing is, if she was actually a nice and good person I probably wouldn’t mind any of this, but it also seems like she’s in a secret competition with me so she has to keep tabs on everything I’m doing! It’s not just what me and husband are doing. She is extremely critical of everyone and everything. The way she has treated and/or talked about certain people, namely her boyfriend, is appalling. That would have to go in another post lol.

Has anyone experienced something like this with their MIL?

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Ambivalent About Advice SIL's cat is sick and MIL is making me angry just thinking about it

Three years ago GF and I lost our apartment. (Long story. Lots of BS.) GF went to live with her mother while I went to live with my sister's friend. I am now out of that situation, but GF is still stuck with MIL and stepdad.

In the process, we had to deal with our (then) 14 year old cat.

MIL wouldn't let GF take her with because the new landlord wouldn't allow pets. (The people downstairs got cats and dog(s?) soon after, but by then it was too late.)

We tried to get SIL to take her, but she didn't get along with her cat. Tried MIL's sister, but she wouldn't follow the ONE simple instruction we gave her: "Give her her daily wet food before her insulin injection and she'll love you."

We ended up surrendering her to a no-kill shelter and that's the last I've known about her. I didn't even get to say goodbye because MIL wouldn't wait.

Enter today.

SIL's 5-6 year old cat (same one as mentioned above) hasn't pooped in a couple of days.

SIL wanted to take her to the emergency vet yesterday, but MIL insisted they were too expensive. Took her to her regular vet today.

Poor girl has a mass in her lower right abdomen. Waiting for the radiologist to tell us if it's operable or not. Odds are it isn't, so we're probably going to put her down on Friday.

What pisses me off is MIL has put so much love and money into SIL's cat simply because SIL's cat likes her and my cat did not.

I can't say a damned thing because I would lose connection to GF. It's a fucking soap opera.

Am I Overreacting? MIL Advice

My MIL lives 2.5 hours away. We had several problems with our first baby and her so that’s why I’m asking..

I’m due in April and she obviously wants to see the new baby when he/she is born. I am fine with her meeting her grandbaby but she insists that she sleeps over at our house. I am 100% not okay with this for several reasons (overstays, doesn’t leave, crosses boundaries, makes me uncomfortable, makes the house a mess, doesn’t pick up after herself, etc.). I also don’t want her at the hospital because I’m having a scheduled c section.

When I say no to sleeping here, just like I did with the first baby, she gets extremely upset and accuses me of keeping her from her grandchild. This makes her not ever want to make the drive here and when she does see my first born, she is very territorial and it is very awkward for me. She will come over unannounced and just not leave for several days which makes me and my husband fight. My husband always feels caught in the middle and I have to be the bad guy.

Am I being too harsh? What would you do?
I’m honestly so tired of my MIL and her demeanor and attitude. At the same time I know that she is my husbands mom and deserves to spend time with her grandchild. I’ve just gotten to the point where I don’t want to even be around her.. I’m super negative about her so I just want some unbiased opinions. 🤍💛

Edit to add: We have traveled there before and stayed the night (against my wishes) and she had crossed every boundary and took him in a spare bedroom and tried to sleep with him in the bed. I absolutely lost my mind and kept texting my husband to please do something and he wouldn’t. I ended up going in there myself and getting him but that was extremely confrontational and awkward. Since then we’ve gone to visit a couple times and stayed in a hotel and his family makes sure to let me know how weird and awful that is that I don’t want to sleep there.

TLC Needed Realizing she's not safe around my daughter

It's been a hot minute since I've posted. There have been 2 in incidences recently that have caused me to back away from my mom further and further. Just want to get some other opinions on this shitshow, maybe some validation that I'm not crazy.

My mom is super needy, immature, flakey-as-fuck - but always always needs to feel like the best mom and grandma ever. I've reduced my contact with her to 1-2x a month, but I've been letting her do a once a week driving my 11 year old daughter to her sports practice. It's like 45min of contact. They get some time together in a structured way, and it's also no big deal WHEN she inevitably cancels for whatever super-important reason like she forgot to eat lunch so she's now too tired at 4pm to drive. Important detail - SOMETIMES my mom brings my daughter to her house which is 5 min away to have snacks before practice.

I was at my mom's house in August to water her plants. My 40 year old brother and his unemployed girlfriend live with my mom. We're not super close but I was just doing small talk and my brother comments that he just got home from buying a padlock. To lock up a gun he bought a little while ago-in it's case...which until today was not locked in a case. I was a little stunned. I didn't know what to say to that. I didn't even know he had guns in the house at all. I left without saying anything else. But I immediately called my mom, and confronted her about this. Asking if she knew there was unsecured firearms in the house. She goes "yes, but don't worry (daughter) never goes in the basement" where the guns are. I flipped my shit. I told her that is NOT the response you should have when I'm asking if my daughter has been exposed to guns. And I made the decision right there that my kid would never be going over to her grandmother's without my supervision ever again.

That was August. And I've been really feeling uncomfortable about having less and less contact with my mom, but somehow still allowing my daughter to see her. Then last week, my daughter comes home from sports practice ALL excited to tell me about her grandmother's new boyfriend. A man, she apparently just met a week ago from the apps. My daughter is just parroting her grandmother, telling me that they are soul-mates and she's super excited about the halloween party they are going to. My mother apparently showed my daughter images of her costume....she will be going as the child character Little Red Riding Hood (this woman is 70!) and her date will be going as a grown-man, the wood-cutter. BARF BARF BARF!!!!

The levels of inappropriateness are so terrible. I am upset that I let this go as long as I did. I'm upset that I trusted her at all to keep my daughter safe while under her care. I feel guilty and grossed out. And also like I'm being awful and over-reacting. But I grew up with physical and sexual abuse at the hands of my mother's many shitty husbands. I just wanted her to be normal and safe, and she isn't.

RANT (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Advice Wanted Am I being unreasonable?

TW: cancer, alcoholism, miscarriage, death (not related to each other).

I'm new here, someone on Girl Dinner Diaries suggested this subreddit, so I'm also posting here.

Let's start with the most important thing, my husband has agreed that she's to have zero contact with our one month old baby (at least until he's much older).

The thing is, I've had a lot of grievances with my MIL for the past couple of years. In my opinion, she is the most selfish person I know. She doesn't care about her son at all, she keeps telling him she's going to do things for him and never does- for instance, four years ago she told him she'd get him slippers for his birthday and to this day, not only has she not, but she hasn't gotten him anything for any of his birthday. She's one of those people that keep promising things and never delivering, to the point where it is hurtful to her son. She's also done so many things to him in the past, not actively hurting him, but neglecting him even when he was a baby.

A couple of years ago, on Christmas, both my husband and I were sick with extreme high fever, and he called her to ask her to go get us some medicine, and she said she couldn't because she had her friend over. He asked her because she's not some helpless old lady, she's an actively working actress, who sings and dances for a living, and regularly goes out with her friends drinking until the morning to the point where we've had to bail her out twice for DUI. My husband had to drive with the drowsiness of the fever to go to the pharmacy himself, all while being in pain and cold.

Last October, we found out I was pregnant. We announced it to my parents and my husband's parents. Sadly, it was a blighted ovum, an empty gestational sac. I had to take meds to miscarry and it was a horrible experience, both emotionally and physically. The pain was absolutely relentless and unbearable for 5 hours or so, I will spare you the details. My mother called my husband to check on me, heard me screaming and decided to come by, at which point we informed her that I wanted NO ONE around me besides my husband.

When his mother learnt of this, she kept telling me that she had to have been here for it, to watch, and kept insisting that I should have allowed her to be here, but that we also shouldn't have announced it so early. Lady, to whom? The people who are supposed to be the closest to us? Well, then she told my husband that there's no reason for us to be sad because there was no baby to lose. We should all be glad that she didn't tell me that because I would have punched this 70 year old lady so fast.

Then came January of this year, when my husband's best friend of 25 years died of cancer. It is still a sore subject, especially considering that we found out that I was pregnant about a week after his death, and in the previous pregnancy we had agreed that we both wanted that friend to be our kid's godfather. My MIL, to this day, has not once asked her own son if he's fine, if he needs anything, how tf he feels losing a second best friend to cancer in 5 years. Then, after his funeral, she gets so piss poor drunk that the dead friend's PARENTS had to call us to make sure she's okay. She then went to their home every week or so and took advantage of the fact they are too nice to throw her out. She got drunk every single time.

During my pregnancy, I had to be on modified bed rest. That means my husband had to be the breadwinner, he had to tidy the house, clean, cook, take care of the dogs, the fish, the snakes.. everything had to be done by him. Not once in the five months she knew I was pregnant (because there was no way I was telling her earlier this time, which she had words about, too) did she ask him if we needed anything. Not a load of laundry done, not a plate of food, nothing. Mind you, she lives right next to us.

Then I got hypertension and gestational diabetes. Shed never asked me how I was or kept up with any of the ultrasounds (in fact she never even asked to see one, which I find peculiar, especially compared to my mother and my husband's grandfather who asked about every ultrasound and test), however decided to tell her just to keep her in the loop. I was still naive, it seems to me now, because this lady told me right in my face that my son was going to die in the womb. I was too dumbfounded to reply, but that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

My husband didn't hear it, but I told him between cries when we got home. They had a fight, and she never apologised to me. She did, however, text me to say that she doesn't know what she did wrong. That is when I decided that I'm going no contact with her.

When I gave birth, she went to visit a friend of hers in the hospital who had a respiratory infection. She then wanted to come see the baby. When my husband told her that she should have done those things in the opposite order, she said "well I thought about it but I didn't".

There are so many other things, but this post is already too long. Like the fact that she called my mother to tell her that we should give the baby water. The baby was 5 days old.

The most important thing is that she's a manipulative alcoholic. My bio father was one, and I don't want my kid around that. Ever.

Yesterday, we came back from the pediatrician and we bumped into her. She hadn't seen the baby that was still in his car seat, so she casually asked if he left him upstairs. On his own. The four week old. She actually meant it.

Anyway.

I felt like I had to protect my child, I didn't want her to even look at him. It was a very animalistic instinct.

I absolutely hate this. I think it is unfair to my husband, especially since my mother was here for two weeks to help after my C-section. On one hand I feel like a terrible person, and on the other hand I think that this tiny human needs to be protected from my MIL.

TLDR: I went no contact with my MIL, don't want her to meet my baby and think it's unfair to my husband.
