Moderator Message State of the Sub: Internet Mysteries

Hi folks! We wanted to check in and formally introduce ourselves to the sub as the team of new and active moderators. We come from various backgrounds and interests, be it true crime, internet mysteries, lostwave, web-sleuthing or educating. But we all have one thing in common and that is the passion and excitement for internet-based mysteries.

What is an internet based mystery?

Attempting to find an absolute meaning to this is hard to do and I think we can all agree that the concept is fairly subjective. To start, we’ve agreed that an internet mystery is a mystery that is found on the internet.

  • An Internet mystery can really be any strange phenomenon or event that hasn’t been solved or explained in the digital world. It often involves the online community, social media, or unexplained events that people discuss and share online. Some examples might include:
  • Unexplained Disappearances: Cases where people have vanished under odd circumstances, and folks online debate what really happened to them. An example of this would be cases like the Springfield Three Disappearances. Yes, it happened in the real World of the early 1990’s; however, it’s a case that has been debated and theorized on via online forums since the mid 90’s.
  • Viral Urban Legends: Stories or myths that spread across the Internet, gaining popularity through social media, even though they lack solid proof.
  • Mysterious Websites or Content: Odd sites or content that pop up without explanation, often with bizarre or creepy themes, like those found in the "deep web."
  • Online Conspiracies: Theories that emerge or gain traction online, usually without super great evidence, but get people talking and speculating.
  • Unidentified Creatures or Phenomena: Videos or reports of strange animals or unexplained events that spark discussion and investigation among people online.
  • These mysteries tend to pull people in, encouraging them to work together to figure things out or to share their thoughts on what’s really going on.

Please take some time to look over the rules and post expectations. Removal reasons for posts will reflect the rules stated. We as a mod team are working on projects such as a wiki, spreadsheet of internet mysteries and their statuses, and other ideas that will help create community and a clear vision for this subreddit.

We are aware that things are not perfect yet. But do know that we are all here actively moderating posts and comments. Which brings us to a major point that we are all facing right now. What posts do we allow and what do we remove? We have run into issues that are hard to navigate. One is coming to terms with the fact that there really aren’t a lot of truly interesting internet mysteries at this moment. It is hard to find new ones and the new ones posted often tend to not be anything that’s worth keeping on the sub.

But we cannot over-moderate everything, as that will in fact completely kill the subreddit. There needs to be a steady stream of posts and content and so there will be times when there’s a post that you personally don’t think fits, but we’ve let slide. This idea is that literally a mystery is a mystery that we do not know about. If we over moderate, we risk missing out on real mysteries.

The other issue is that we cannot in good faith just let everything slide. So we will remove posts that are big piles of nothing without further discussion.

Here’s where you come in: You are able to flag posts you think are low effort, don’t fit the sub, or are inappropriate. You are able to downvote posts that we choose not to remove. YOU are able to comment on posts you don’t like and (respectfully) give your opinions on the matter. The content quality of a sub is just as much a moderator's task as it is a member's task by using the upvote/downvote buttons and engaging in conversation. Please refrain from making comments in posts that you don’t like whining and telling the mods to do something. We are doing our best. You do something! Engagement creates community and quality.

We look forward to enjoying this subreddit with you all! We are discussing creating a new Internet Mysteries discord server, so please let us know if there is interest in that. It would be great to have a place to discuss mysteries in real time there instead of tons of them being posted here. Of course, it would be a great resource for major mysteries as well in which we could work together to investigate. Please feel welcome to comment here with any concerns, or reach out to the mod-team directly at any time!

Internet Rabbit Hole Very strange group of accounts on TikTok, Instagram and Youtube of a individual obsessed with immortality

Thumbnail

While scrolling on Instagram, I came around a video talking about how heterossexuality is based on gender roles more than the true biological factor, accompanied with low quality animations and robotic voiceover. However, at the very end of the video, the narrator tells that it is all a distraction to brainwash the human race into not completing it true purpose: achieving immortality. By going to the profile I found a LOT of similar videos, talking about other topics leading to the same conclusion, that emotions hold us back from achieving immortality. Upon further inspection via the linktree linked to the profile, I found a TikTok account with over 30k followers and a youtube channel that talked about "immortality robots". ARG or transhumanism obsessed individual?

Unsolved Screenshot of an unsettling Facebook post without context (circa 2013)

Post image
207 Upvotes

So I was going through a folder with stuff I had saved from 4chan's /x/ during my teens and found this really weird image (with the file dating to 29/05/2013) of a kid with a Sonic the Hedgehog OC Facebook profile called "Chandlor Thehedgehog", holding a copy of Black Ops 2 for the Xbox 360 with a caption about how he doesn't go outside and only plays Call of Duty. At a glance it just looks like a funny post, but once you brighten up the image there's clearly something pretty weird behind him? It's definitely not impossible that this could just be another person and everything that looks odd here is just the result of low light noise but as hard as I try, I cannot not see a weird, uncanny skeletal bald thing with an exposed ribcage. I wanna say it could be a skinny old man but really, I've never seen a living person look *as* emaciated as this thing does?

What brought me to making this thread is that there seems to be almost nothing about it online. Google, Bing, and Yandex's reverse image search options gave me exactly zero matches, and TinEye only gave me a single archived 4chan thread where someone had reposted the collage. By using the archive's own reverse image search function, I was able to find a couple of other threads where people had reposted the image, but only one of them actually had something of a discussion going on. First, the anon who presumably made the collage came out and talked about how it was discovered:

The original thread was from march 2013, the OP only posted the left pic so we could laugh at the autism (thehedghehog), after a while someone looked a little closer and asked if anyone else can see it. Someone took the pic and changed the lighting to reveal that spooky thing in the backround and people shat their pants. I just took the two pics and put them side by side.

And then here's someone's alleged backstory, which honestly sounds like creepypasta bullshit made up after the fact to me but I'll leave it here for the sake of posterity anyways:

Shit, I have a screencap of the story behind that picture, but it's on my iPad which I currently don't have access to.
Basically that kid in the background was a homeless kid that was living in the woods. No parents, didn't go to school, very basic knowledge of English, etc. The kid that took that pic befriended him and had secretly been letting him play at his house for like 5 months. In the mean time, his mom was becoming more and more paranoid because she kept finding these dead animals in the woods and hearing strange noises in the house when her son wasn't home (both caused by this weird homeless kid). Anyway, that kid uploaded that pic to Facebook, and his mom quickly found out about it. She fucking lost it when she saw that figure in the background. Her son didn't want to get in trouble for keeping that homeless kid around and whatnot, so he told her he had no idea what the thing in the picture was, and it really messed with her. She was paranoid as fuck for a while and started getting less and less sleep, so her son felt guilty and finally told the truth one night when the kid was spending the night there. He led his mom to his closet to show him the boy and explain the story, and his mom went on to lock the homeless kid in the closet and beat her son out of anger. She told all of that to her nephew, who was the one who was posting about it. He declined to go into further details after the last event due to legal trouble or something.

Unfortunately, this is where the trail goes cold, I basically can't find anything else on the archives or elsewhere. Again, I want to believe that the explanation really is something as mundane as "weird lighting makes normal person look weird", but I honestly, just can't see it, it really looks like some weird unsettling mummified corpse instead. If anyone can dig out more info on it, it would be great to satiate my curiosity.

Unsolved Found a weird IG account posting numbers, mental illness or something else?

Post image
16 Upvotes

So I stumbled onto this account that posts numbers I’m not a math guy so I can’t tell if these mean anything. The numbers are always in the same format and there’s creepy ai voice over sometimes. Sometimes there’s comments on post but those seem to be bots too? I’m not sure if this whole thing is a bot or a person with mental illness or a woo woo numerology thing or what. I thought I’d share it here since it seems like something this community would be interested in exploring. Let me know if anyone has any insights into this. Thanks

General Discussion Strange account on tiktok, looking for help to potentially prevent a tragedy (UK placed users would be most of help) NSFW

Okay so, while scrolling tiktok i stumbled across an account which i first believed to be a very distasteful joke however the deeper i go the more concerned i get.
It could be a joke, or it could be someone planning a massacre, im hoping that maybe i can reach people who either know the account owner or can do anything or just confirm its a dumb kid making fun of school sh**tings.
Below i will attach links in case someone wants to confirm the screenshots, and I truly pray its just a ragebait account, i hope the redditors of this subreddit can help to get to the bottom of this…
Idk if this is the right place to post it but i know people here are pretty good at digging and i don’t know where else to take this since i realistically don’t have an option to contact the UK police myself. I really wish its just an edgy kid with too much free internet access and not another netflix documentary candidate…

  1. The account in question

(i will not add links to videos because quite frankly i’m very NOT tech savy and idk how to take out the link to my own account while linking his videos)
EDIT: so apparently he might not be in UK, just saw a story a moment ago where he says he’s in netherlands

What is going on in Baltimore? Second Chance Inc in Baltimore MD found on FB

Thumbnail

So I was just casually scrolling through Facebook, and you know how sometimes Facebook randomly recommends posts from accounts you’ve never followed, interacted with, or even heard of? Well, one of those posts popped up on my feed, and something about it caught my attention. I ended up clicking on the profile to see what it was, and it turns out it’s an actual company based in Baltimore. Like, a real business, not just some random account someone made.
But here’s where it gets weird. Their last few posts have been really strange and honestly kind of creepy. They don’t seem like the type of content you’d expect an actual business to be posting. One of the things they posted was a Facebook story where random numbers start flashing on the screen, and then out of nowhere there’s a jump scare.
Now, obviously, the jump scare makes me think this is probably fake or some kind of joke, but I’m still confused. Why is an actual company randomly posting creepy stuff like this? And why on a random Sunday of all days? Is this some weird marketing stunt? Did someone hack their account? Is an employee just messing around? I genuinely have no idea.
I feel like there’s probably a really simple explanation for all of this, but the whole thing is just so random that I can’t stop wondering what the hell is going on. Has anyone else come across something like this, or does anyone have any idea why a legitimate business would suddenly start posting stuff like this?

Unsolved Person on ao3 planning a murder? Found years ago but I wanted to post it.

Back in 2022 I was browsing a03 (fanfic website for those that don't know), and looking through the original character tag. I found this. I posted it around to some buddies and they all told me it was just some edgy kid and at the time I believed it, so I forgot about it for years. I recently saw a post in this sub showcasing an Instagram account of a kid sounding like he was planning a school shooting and it reminded me of this.

I feel horrible that I never reported it seriously, and that if this actually happened that I might have been able to help prevent this by contacting authorities. The account no longer exists and I managed to get screenshots before it was deleted. I thought I'd post it just to see what you guys think.

Was it just some edgy kid, or a genuine plan for a murder that might have happened?

Edit: general consensus seems to be that it's someone trying to be edgy or just having an unfortunate mental breakdown. Glad that I didn't miss something bad back then. Hope this person got help.

YouTube cedillomontes "xxxxxx" uploader posted a video titled "osaka" after 19 years (september 14 2026), which has been deleted

cedillomontes uploaded a new video titled “osaka” after 19 years since the infamous "xxxxxxx" video. the new video was of a woman screaming with loud sounds playing in the background, and the only clip i have is 4 seconds long, which i will link in the comments. i haven’t been able to find anything else about it, so i thought i’d post it here to see if anyone else has seen this or know anything about it.

the video was deleted about a day or two after it was uploaded (if i remember correctly), and most people in the comments were saying it was a hacker. it might be one, but im surprised no one else posted about it. people have already talked about the "xxxxxxx" comment he pinned on his original video, but i'm not seeing anything on this.

(third photo was taken from u/Schoolbusfoamer24 's post on this, saying it was hacked)

Who is populist47 ? His video comes from nowhere right in my recommandations...

For the past two months, I’ve been randomly finding videos by "populist47" in my recommendations. They’re strange—featuring "weirdcore" music, an unusual static image, and odd titles like "this video found you at the right moment." The tracks all have timestamps, and there are hidden messages in them. I've seen in his channel description that he was very very christian and he was fighting against the seven deadly sins with his videos. If anyone knows anything about this, please let me know.

P.S. Sorry if my English is bad; I’m a French speaker 😅

[Trigger warning: Suicide, possible grooming] Original untranslated screenshots from the earlier post about Rorochan_1999

Thumbnail

Since the earlier post on Rorochan only had the tweets translated by grok, i figured it would be helpful to also have the original source untranslated incase any person fluent in Japanese and familiar with rorochan’s case could maybe have a better translation. If you don’t know the context, I’ll briefly explain it, Rorochan_1999 was a japanese 14 year old streamer who passed away in 2013 on a livestream due to suicide. On twitcast, a popular japanese streaming platform that rorochan used, you can automatically tweet the messages you are sending in chat and this is what is happening here. The “エロいメンヘラ処女jc” part is the title of rorochans stream, and the link is the link to the stream. For a few years, before this all of rorochans stream chat logs were lost apart from the chat log of her final suicide stream, and i found these out of curiosity just wondering if anyone had tweeted about rorochan before she passed away.

(I also want to end this by warning that rorochans case is extremely tragic, please don’t try and recreate it thinking that it’ll make you famous as there are far better healthier ways to gain attention that dont leave behind sadness. Please take her case as a caution instead of an inspiration. If you’re struggling, please reach out to someone, suicide is never worth it.)

YouTube What is the I Want Dat Meatball Video pigman third origin? Potential exploitation ring.

Hi, im looking for the origin of the pigman part of the youtube video called I want dat meatball. Do know that this video is loud and creepy, so viewer discretion is advised.

There is a disturbing part of the this video at the end of a person crawling around in a realistic pigman.

The most disturbing part?

You can hear children.

Im worried this is part of something much, much darker than we thought, so I want to be able to find this video so I can make sure.

Please, as this video kinda gave me a panic attack.

Internet Rabbit Hole [Trigger Warning: Suicide, possible grooming] Offputting Twitter account with *possible* grooming evidence related to rorochan_1999, a 14 year old girl who live-streamed her suicide in 2013

Thumbnail
gallery
697 Upvotes

Background: rorochan_1999 was a 14-year-old girl from Shiga, Japan, who streamed on FC2, Niconico and TwitCasting. She died by suicide during an FC2 live stream on November 24, 2013, after saying she wanted to become a "legend." The case got wider attention years later through a 2019 song by the Japanese band Shinsei Kamattechan inspired by cases like hers and the resurfacing of the stream archive.
While it is a well known fact that she was exposed to online grooming / bullying to some extent, those cases weren’t really known or archived

Why I'm posting: while most of her streams and their chats are lost media and are not archived,TwitCasting had an option that let users automatically tweet their own stream comments to their Twitter account. The account had this enabled, so tweets from her streams are still visible. Some of the comments look inappropriate for an adult to be saying to a minor, hence "possible" in the title. I can't say who runs the account and i DO NOT ask you to find personal info about this person or contact / harass them. Please DONT do this 🙏

General Discussion Found a deeply disturbing Instagram account that posts repetitive, violent text and “insect crush” content nonstop

Hey everyone,

I came across a very strange and disturbing Instagram account recently and wanted to share it here to see if anyone has encountered something similar or understands the motivation behind this type of behavior. The account’s name is supe.rmario8500. It is private but they will follow you back I suppose, but

❗️beware of disturbing content❗️

The account posts at an extraordinarily high frequency—sometimes multiple times every few minutes—despite having zero likes, comments, or followers. The content follows a very specific and repetitive pattern:

  1. Graphic and Cruel Descriptions: The posts consist of text and images describing the killing or crushing of small creatures (like flies, snails, and insects).

  2. Bizarre Personal Oversharing: The captions contain hyper-specific, oddly phrased details. The user frequently claims specific names, ages, exact timestamps, and references to adult/BDSM websites or videos they were allegedly listening to while making the posts. They sometimes even post pictures of the 🌽 sites and have repetitive, almost hauntingly similar descriptions under each post.

  3. Shock Value and Escalation: The tone is aggressive and grandiose, often talking about "dominance" over tiny pests or bragging about bizarre actions in a basement or household setting.
What strikes me as odd is the sheer volume of posts combined with the complete lack of an audience. It feels like a mix between an automated bot script, extreme attention-seeking/rage-baiting, or someone using a public profile as an unfiltered diary for unsettling compulsions.

I have already reported the profile and individual posts to Instagram for violating community guidelines regarding graphic content and animal cruelty.

Has anyone else run into accounts operating like this? Is this just a classic case of a bot testing algorithms with shock content, or an individual operating in a total void?

I found several TikTok LIVE accounts using what appears to be the same woman — is this a scam?

Thumbnail

I came across a TikTok LIVE that seemed strange. At first I didn't give it attention so I leave the live and start doom scrolling and saw her again in different accounts live streaming after only scrolling 3 videos. So I checked the second but she wear different clothes and again came back to the first live and started telling people to stop giving money and there's something wrong about this live because she doesn't talk just do same thing repeatedly like she's in loop or pre recorded. and again aslo returned to the second live started to tell people the same thing Which is I got blocked by two live streamer.

so idk the girl is scammer or using her for money but the crazy part is there's not only two accounts I discovered four accounts.

the first one I counter is this one @theochua35 after that this @blakeneng37195 and this @terrancewon4 and finally this @vinniehsiao.

So if you know tiktok rules it's not permitted to stream pre recorded.

And I checked where's the account regional locked using Omar thing the first one from USA the rest of them is from Uk but the language is Chinese.

Don't mind English it's not my first language sorry.

I have added multiple variations of the image in case any one of them could help. I don't know which video it was but it was from a jaystation video.

It might be from a movie, maybe found footage, but I have no idea. It might even be from those obscure youtube videos from years ago.

I tried searching the image through Google images but there were no results. I have even done reverse image search through tineye reverse image search but, again, there were no result.

If anyone can find where this image came from please let me know.

Edit: It's definitely from the ring

YouTube Help me find the origin of the scream used in this cursed video (i want dat meatball)

Well, some of you probably already know this video. It's called "i Want Dat Meatball."

It's really weird to describe, but for those who haven't seen it, I'll try my best. It shows a cartoon about two cats chasing a meatball, then cuts to a video of a man wearing a paper mask saying, "I want that meatball." Finally, the video ends with footage of a naked man crawling on the floor while wearing a pig mask. There's also children's laughter in the background and... A SCREAM.

And that scream is what caught my attention, because I'm 90% sure I've heard it in a gore video before. It just sounds way too familiar. Anyways, I could be misremembering. If you have any information about its possible origin, please let me know.

Unsolved Does anyone remember this footage? Eerie footage of 2 tourist visiting a hermit who lives deep in the jungle in a wooden rat infested hut.

A couple of years ago I watched this video and I tried finding it again with no luck. Basically I have seen a Reddit post on a r/letsnotmeet type subreddit, maybe even it but I am unsure. In it was a story written of the encounter, at first it sounded a bit fantastical, like as if it was meant to be a fictional letsnotmeet type ish story. However, the poster recorded the entire encounter to fully back up the story. I will now tell you the story in as best detail as I can remember, consider it‘s been at least a couple or so years if not even longer so some details may be off.

The video starts and appears to be filmed by assumingely the phone camera of one of the two tourists. He records the video but I suppose doesn‘t want the hermit to see so a lot of the time the camera is just pointed to the ground or to the sky or with subideal angles, it is also dusk with night setting in so a lot of the footage is very dark and things are not properly in focus, the quality is also poor, however it captures audio that‘s audible enough. The 2 tourist are native English speakers I believe of the US, they are in an Amazonian jungle, I am of the belief it was in Brazil but I am unsure it could be a couple of South American countries. My memory is a bit blurred and I can‘t pinpoint how the video exactly starts but it‘s either them standing on the side of some road that’s located in the jungle, talking to the hermit or them already on the path towards his hut. The hermit looks completely like the typical Robinson Crusoe castaway stereotype with deeply brown leathery skin, a very unkempt appearance with long white hair and a long beard. I think he is in his 50s or 60s but I suppose the environment has aged him drastically and it‘s obvious he has been there a long time. Also, he is definitely not a native English speaker but he is also not native from the country that their in, in fact I am quire sure he is of foreign descent, I am very unsure of which country but possibly a German accent? (I really don’t know though, that lead didn’t lead me to anything at all so I might be very off here) but he speaks English well enough to understand him. He invites the tourists to his house. His house is a wooden worn down hut deep into the jungle. It is very baren with almost nothing but he has a couple dozens of rats he claims are his pets. What‘s a bit unsettling is he has dozens of notes stuck to all of his walls (maybe ceiling too) on which he has scribbled something on all of them. The tourist asks him about this he says something along the lines of „yea I do write a lot…“ but doesn’t explain any further on what’s written on them or why he did it. Unfortunately the video doesn’t capture what’s written on the notes so we can’t make out what language he used. The footage gets a dark turn soon, while the hermit appears friendly and maybe happy about the human companionship, as the tourist begin to leave, and mind you this, after they realized the notes they made excuses why they have to go early, they did seem unsettled and, the hermit then asks them to take them back to the road where they came from, however he insists on taking a smaller much less well stepped on path (the original was already very jungle ish, not even a real trail or anything). The tourists are immediately sketched out and insists on taking the same way back. The hermit then starts arguing telling them that it is a shortcut, when they still refuse he tells them that the way they came from has “more mud” saying the “shortcut” is better. It is clear though (and we can see this) that the “shortcut” path is going into a completely different direction and definitely appears to lead deeper into the jungle. When the tourists still refuse, they walk the way back (maybe on their own). The hermit when arguing is not crashing out or getting angry, he keeps his friendly demeanor up but it is very clear that his intent is most likely nefarious since he kept on insisting on taking that path leading deeper into the jungle. The tourists wrote that they were getting extremely unsettled once he wanted them to take this other path. The whole vibe was very eerie since it was very dark too with night settling in as they step out the hut beginning to leave and the guy changing his tone, like yeah he stayed friendly in tone but it was very obvious that there was some bad intent.

Some time later I also seen this video in some kind of YouTuber‘s ”YT darkest video“ type video, smaller to but similar to Nick Crowley, Chilling Scares, InternetInvestigator, etc.

anyone remember this and help me find it again? I already tried looking up searches that might fit the criteria, when this didn’t work I also asked ChatGPT telling the story since that did actually work in finding very obscure articles and videos again but this time without any luck. I almost thought for a moment I was maybe imagining it but I am 100% sure this video does exist, at least did so at some point in time, since I have read the story, seen the video linked and then I have seen it again in a YouTuber’s video.

General Discussion Who's your favorite older internet mystery youtubers that have since retired? or newer more under appreciated ones covering interesting internet mysteries?

I'm looking for more internet mysteries that are either older and forgotten or that are newer and more unexplored. I thought a good way to find those are with the people that used to cover stuff and retired or are just getting started.

I noticed every now and then certain channels that would pop up, do good work on an investigation then completely disappear for whatever reason. Or channels that are newer and cover novel mysteries but are under appreciated.

Channels like ScareTheatre, Nexpo, etc are still around and kicking, and are enormous.

but I mean channels like Elder Vault who covered a bunch of mysteries in the late 2010s then disappeared, or a new youtuber like Kuhlaki who's covered a bunch of interesting stuff like the hutz honeychurch jazz.

Anyone know any good ones?

General Discussion Who remembers Alison Gold? And the controversy of the producer Patrice Wilson?

Post image
126 Upvotes

I don’t want to get into a whole deep dive because there are some really good ones on YouTube, like this one https://youtu.be/Kqhu04r1IAE?is=LF1e_gxhpEkHwSi6

The video “shush up” was so hyper sexualized that YouTube had to take the video down.

“Skip Rope” has kids selling “candy” on the corner to each other.

Alison Gold ended up doing some acting in movies and seems to be doing great. I haven’t heard any updated from Patrice Wilson in a long time.

Do you guys remember this? How did you feel about these videos or Patrice himself?
