Auto Insurance Car insurance dropped me

First claim ever for a not at fault (deer hit and run) no other damage to than my car. Took my car to get an estimate and right after, the policy holder (my dad) received an email that I am being dropped. Confused here?? Never had an issue with insurance before

EDIT: thanks to the few who were genuinely trying to help. I’ll be taking the appropriate steps to get this fixed. I should have worded this a bit differently but it was not a “hit and run”. A deer jumped out in front of the car therefore causing damage to the vehicle. As for the others ✌🏼

Dropped (i.e., cancelled) or non-renewed? What does the email say?

“(OP) has been removed from the policy as they do not qualify for coverage”

You are licensed to drive, live with your parent and added as included driver in your parent's policy right?

It sucks but they could drop it..

Yes I have a current license, recently moved in with my husband however all my legal documents still say I live at my parents address

This really isn't hard.

You don't live with your parents. They don't own your car. You should be on a policy with your husband, not them.

The end.

Car is under my dad’s name.

Mystery solved.

Listed drivers need to live at the address where the vehicle is garaged.

The vehicle either needs to remain at his house and have an occupant of that household listed as the primary driver, or he needs to transfer ownership to you and you have your own policy at your current address, or add the vehicle to your husband's existing policy at the same address.

The vehicle need to be regularly used at the address of the vehicle owner.

I often see people on this subreddit say that even if a driver doesn’t live at the same address as the named insured, they should still be listed on the policy if they frequently drive the insured vehicles?

That is correct. However, insurers are not required to accept additional drivers outside the household.

This is incorrect information. Many young adults (my son included) that join the military have vehicles in their parents’ name and no longer live at home. I’m sure there are the same for college students. My company owns the car that I drive and I don’t house it at their location.

Any chance they deny the claim through some type of misrepresentation?

2

u/pizzabot22 8h ago

Possible. Depends on how long ago OP moved out. But material misrepresentation, whether intentional or not, potentially void the insurance contract.

You should get this fixed right away.

So your dad owns and insures a vehicle that is garaged at a separate address? That's the issue right there.

One policy is not meant to cover multiple households.

thats why your dad has no insurable interest in the car and you no longer live with him

Bingo. You're married and in your own household. You need your own insurance policy with you and your husband. Legal address means nothing in insurance. Policies are rated based on where and with who you live.

But you don’t live with your parents.

How long ago is “recent?”

6

u/quallityovrquantity 9h ago

Why? You live with your husband correct? Sounds like borderline insurance fraud

3

u/Resse811 7h ago

That’s called fraud.

I would try to reach out to the insurance company for more info. If you were specifically listed on the policy as a driver then something unusual would be happening for them to say you don't qualify for coverage. If you weren't listed on the policy, that could be the issue.

It's because they don't live in the same home.

This action is 100% not related to a comp claim for an animal strike. Maybe they found something out as part of their investigation into that claim.

Do you have accidents previously on other vehicles? Traffic violations or crimjnal citations? Suspended license? Are you insured on another policy? Bankruptcy?

Every insurer will have different rules for the risks they will and won't insure. They found something they didn't like that wasn't disclosed (whether intentional or not intentional) and responded accordingly.

Only your insurer's underwriting team can really confirm. The letter should have a number on it to call.

They don't live with their parents any longer

u/scruz97 10h ago

No previous accidents or citations

Odds are they found something they didn’t like and dropped you because of it. Maybe because you didn’t bother to tell them where you live or that the vehicle they insure isn’t located at the address they have on file. A phone call to your insurance company couldn’t hurt.

What did the insurance company say when you called and asked about this?

u/FormerGeico 10h ago

That’s a bridge too far. Randos on Reddit have better info

I’ve read all of your replies to other comments. You should change the registration to your name, add yourself and the car under you and your husband’s policy, at your current address.

u/scruz97 7h ago

Thank you for your help. Unlike the others lol

No problem. Your rate will obviously be very different when you add yourself and the car to your husband’s policy (which is now both of your policy) but it is now insured properly. You shouldn’t have any issues if any accidents occur in the future (hopefully none) if you guys have the correct coverages. On another note, now that you’re married, you and your husband should be on everything that is important, such as renter’s policy (if you rent and have one) or a homeowners policy.

Basically, since you’re married now, put both of your names on anything and everything that is important. It’ll save you guys a lot of headaches if anything comes up (hopefully nothing, but better be safe than sorry)

A deer hit and run? That’s not a thing. Are you saying you hit a deer? If so who do you think is at fault? The deer?

1

u/Lexi-Brownie 3h ago

Yeah, if you gave the collision company your actual address when dropping off the car, that wouldn’t be hard your insurer to discover…

I know you said all your documents reflect your dad’s address but does that include your DL?

Also, one recorded phone call with either you or your dad accidentally revealing or jumbling up your story would likely be the culprit.

Definitely not advocating for what you’re doing, as this certainly qualifies as rate evasion… just running through the possible scenarios.

Ive totaled 3 cars and my insurance still hasnt dropped me.

They did just drop my rates though, right after my last accident.

(None were at fault)

Statefarm will have your back.

u/SimbaOneTrueKing 5h ago

Your situation is very different from the OP. You were insured correctly, they were not. Another thing is even though you had accidents, you were not at fault

Be aware that your rate may go up if YOU were the cause of accidents or any minor mishaps in the future though.

1

u/dodekahedron 1h ago

They said they weren't at fault either. 🤷‍♀️

One of my totals was comprehensive, no other driver. Closer to their situation.

I was just offering them a company that works with difficult to insure people. 👍

Sorry but how do you think you aren't at fault for hitting a deer? Was the deer driving a car and hit your car? This also isn't a "hit and run" unless the deer was in fact driving a car and drive away.

-1

u/Important-Nobody-261 8h ago

Shouldnt have tried to scam them and drive like shit. Thats an immediate drop

My guess is that you were not a listed operator on your father’s policy. Insurance company is taking the opportunity to ditch an insured who was actively avoiding paying the appropriate premium by not advising them of all the operators in the household.

How is hitting a deer an act of god?

Did he neglect to add you to the policy?
