Auto Insurance Agent discouraging stacked UM/UIM

I live in Florida. We are switching our policy to be able to combine with our homeowners’ policy for additional discounts. We currently have 100/300 with stacked UM/UIM. The new agent says we don’t need stacked coverage as it only covers medical. I know that’s not true and she did come off that when pressed. She claims it’s just not common anymore. I asked about increasing our coverage to 250/500 with the same for UM. She felt that was a better idea than using stacked.

We are 61 and 62. I’m retired but working part time while my husband still works. He works for the state government and can retire at any time but will probably stay another 2 1/2 years. He has plenty of PTO and we have excellent health insurance.

I’m super confused about what I should do. I’ve never had an agent try to convince me NOT to stack and the state’s default is stacked, so I’d have to sign a waiver indicating the choice of non-stacking.

Can anyone give me an idea of what would be best for us?

ETA: We have a 2024 BMW i5 and a 2025 Mazda CX-5

Not in FL, but in another state that offers stacking on UM & UIM. The only time that stacking doesn’t make sense IMHO is when there’s only one vehicle on the policy bc 1 x 1 is still 1. Stacking carries a higher premium bc of the higher coverage amount.

UM coverage is only for medical down there, unfortunately. Same here.

Going to 250/500 with unstacked UM is definitely better than keeping 100/300 and stacking, like there's not even a question about it.

How many vehicles/policies are you stacking coverage with?

Sorry! I just edited my post. We have a 2024 BMW i5 and a 2025 Mazda CX-5 and both vehicles would have stacked

Not related to your question but as it seems you understand more about coverage than your agent why are you with them? Will you have any confidence in them to assist you if you have a claim in the future? Can look into another agent in your area that represents that carrier and ask them to take over your policies. They may even find other gaps in coverage or savings you are unaware of.

Agents barely know anything accurate about the claims process.. They'll file a claim with their client when an excluded driver was driving expecting coverage 😭

She is right that increasing the liability and uim would be better. Like....a lot better. But it would be even better than that if you could get also stacked UIM at 250.
