The rupee’s fall isn’t caused by one person or one government. But that doesn’t mean the government should escape accountability.

As of October 2026, the rupee has faced severe pressure from rising crude oil prices, foreign investors pulling money out of Indian markets, higher US interest rates and trade tensions. Reuters reported that the rupee approached ₹96.96 per dollar before RBI measures helped it recover. On October 12, it rebounded sharply to around ₹95.77.

A short-term recovery, however, doesn’t mean the underlying problem is solved.

Who is responsible?

- Global factors: US interest rates, a stronger dollar, geopolitical tensions and expensive oil put pressure on emerging-market currencies. India cannot control these directly.

- Modi government and Finance Ministry:They influence taxation, fiscal policy, trade, investment conditions and the country's long-term economic resilience.

- RBI:It manages monetary policy, foreign-exchange intervention and financial stability. It can slow excessive depreciation, but cannot permanently force the rupee to a particular value without costs.

- India's economic structure:Heavy dependence on imported oil, inadequate export earnings relative to import demand, and volatile foreign investment flows leave the rupee vulnerable.

What's actually happening?

India imports roughly 88–89% of its crude oil requirements. When oil becomes expensive, India needs more dollars to pay its import bill. Meanwhile, when foreign investors sell Indian assets and move money abroad, demand for dollars can rise further.

The RBI has responded with measures including a special dollar window for state-owned oil companies, tighter foreign-exchange derivative rules and intervention in currency markets. These measures can reduce immediate pressure, but they cannot replace stronger exports, stable investment inflows and lower energy vulnerability.

What should India do practically?

1. Reduce oil dependence: Expand renewable energy, public transport, electrification and energy efficiency while diversifying oil supplies.

2. Increase exports: Improve manufacturing, logistics, skills and regulatory certainty so India earns more dollars from goods and services.

3. Attract long-term investment:Make taxation predictable, enforce contracts efficiently and reduce policy uncertainty.

4. Protect purchasing power: Keep inflation under control and ensure wages keep pace with living costs.

5. Use RBI intervention carefully:Contain disorderly currency movements without wasting reserves trying to defend an arbitrary exchange rate.

6. Demand accountability:Publish measurable progress on exports, energy dependence, employment, real wages and currency stability—not just announcements and headline GDP growth.

Should Nirmala Sitharaman be blamed?

She should be held accountable for decisions within her portfolio, but blaming her alone for every rupee movement would be economically inaccurate. The RBI, the broader government, global markets and India's long-standing structural weaknesses all matter.

At the same time, saying “global factors are responsible” cannot become an excuse for failing to strengthen India's economic resilience.

The real goal shouldn't be to force the rupee back to ₹70 per dollar overnight. It should be to make India less vulnerable to oil shocks, more competitive in exports, better at attracting productive investment, and capable of delivering rising real incomes.

A weaker currency is not automatically proof of economic failure. But a persistently weakening currency alongside expensive essentials, weak wage growth and poor job opportunities deserves serious scrutiny.

The question we should be asking is simple: Are India's economic policies making ordinary citizens more financially secure and the country less dependent on external shocks—or are we celebrating GDP growth while ignoring what people actually experience?

My bf went for garba nyt without me.

We were a long distance couple, and last year planned to go together in any garba fest this yr when we will be together. This yr when we are no longer long distanced, and I wanted to go for it w him, my exams came and it will end day after tomorrow. And the very next we are going back our homes for the Dusshera holidays. So garba nyt with him isn't possible, as we are coming after Navratri ends.

So now he said " I can't go with you bcz of your exams, and if I won't go alone then I will miss the whole garba fests" so he went with his friends, class mates etc etc.

Idk what to feel.. it was my exams that's why I wasn't able to go with him....so he just went without me... Myb he's right to do so.. but imma feeling sad dk y
