r/HomeDepot FAQs

Hello to the r/HomeDepot community here on reddit, may Homer continue to bless you and keep you in his orange embrace.

The mod team thought it would be a good idea to pin a list of common questions with answers that get posted often here in the community. This is by no means comprehensive and doesn't go in depth, but should help new and seasoned associates alike with quick answers instead of waiting on the community to respond. This is for US only, Canada and Mexico may have different policies due to different legal requirements.

I imagine the FAQs will need to be continually tweaked as SOP and technology in Home Depot changes. If something seems out of date feel free to speak up.

Also with the publication of these FAQs a new rule is being introduced: if a post is made where the answer is explicitly covered here the post will be removed.

FAQs:

Q: My Post was removed by the automod, why?

A: There is a minimum karma AND account age requirement to post/comment in this community. This is to prevent trolls and ban evaders. If your account is new, go play around on reddit elsewhere for a few days by commenting/posting in other communities. You'll clear the age/karma requirement in a week or so. If your account age exceeds the minimum but you have incredibly low or negative karma...well...you're the kind of person the automod was meant to block. Sorry, not sorry.

Q: I made a post and automod commented on it. Was the post removed?

A: Read the comment from the automod. Automod is set to comment on EVERY new post, letting people know this community is for associates and not customers. If it doesn't say your post was removed, then it wasn't. Very simple. If you're still confused...well...Reading Rainbow is still available on YouTube.

Q: I’m a customer and have a question, can I post it here?

A: No. Respectfully this is a digital breakroom for Home Depot associates, current, former and future. Customer questions will be removed and the poster may be banned, Reference sidebar rule #1. Please contact your store or call 1-800-HOMEDEPOT (1-800-466-3337) with any questions or concerns. Questions about employment for yourself or others will be tolerated within reason.

Q: Do I get paid for orientation?

A: Yes. Talk with your ASDS to find out more.

Q: What is an ASDS?

A: Associate Support Department Supervisor. They are essentially the admin for the store and store manager and are responsible for new associate onboarding, scheduling, and other activities

Q: What is myApron?

A: myApron is the internal SharePoint site for all Home Depot employees, accessible from any store computer. You are not able to access it from home unless you are in a role that allows VPN access. All SOPs and company documents that associates need to access are housed here.

Q: When is payday?

A: Payday is always on Friday. Which Friday depends on what state you are in. Some states require pay weekly. To find out which Friday you will get paid on search on myApron for “Payroll Calendar”

Q: Some associates are saying they get paid early, how does that work?

A: Completely dependent on your banking institution. Home Depot releases the payroll on Wednesday to be deposited on Friday. Some banks just load it as available but pending on the release day. Some don't.

Q: How does Holiday Pay work?

A: You must be employed for at least 90 days to be eligible for Holiday Pay and work the scheduled shift before the holiday, the shift of the holiday (if applicable) and the next scheduled shift after the holiday. If you call out and have PTO to cover your absence, manager CAN excuse the absence for you to receive holiday pay. Be prepared to have a respectful conversation and to advocated for yourself if you find yourself in this position, your holiday pay may be taken even if you had PTO time to cover and you'll need to advocate to get it back. If you’re on a scheduled vacation for the holiday, you will receive holiday pay instead of vacation pay for that day. Part-timers receive 4 hours of holiday pay, full-timers receive 8 hours of holiday pay. Reference “Time Off Benefits” on myApron to learn more.

Q: What are the days that receive Holiday Pay in Home Depot?

A: Home Depot provides eligible associates with six paid holidays a year. These are New Years Day, Memorial Day (except for New Orleans stores, Mardi Gras is substituted), Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Home Depot stores are closed only 2 days a year, Thanksgiving and Christmas. To view the SSC holiday schedule and learn more please go to myApron and search for "Time-off Benefits".

Q: What is Success Sharing, when is it paid out and who is eligible?

A: Success Sharing is the company’s bonus program for non-management associates (hourly and salary). It is based on sales above sales plan for your store. For SSC associates, it is based on sales above plan for the company. No one can tell you how much it will be except your store leadership. Track how well your store is doing vs sales plan, and you’ll get an idea if it will be good, bad, or non-existent. It is paid out 2x a year, approximately the 2nd week in September and 2nd week in March. To be eligible, you must be employed with the company at the time of the payout and have been employed at least 90 days during the fiscal half that the bonus is based on. IOW, if you were hired at end June you will not be eligible because the half ends in July, roughly 30 days after you were hired. To learn more search on myApron for “Benefits 101”

Q: What are our fiscal halves?

A: 1H runs from February until the end of July. 2H runs August until the end of January

Q: Do manager bonuses come from success sharing pool?

A: No, their bonus comes from a different pool of money and is based on different, more difficult to achieve metrics. Cutting hours at the end of the fiscal half will not improve their bonus in any significant way. This is a persistent rumor with no basis in reality. Sales and turns play a bigger part in their bonus and cutting hours won’t make up the difference if the store is already missing profitability goals.

Q: I’m part time, why are my hours being cut in July/January?

A: In July we are moving out of the spring busy season, you’ll notice some stores removing their mulch-pit drive throughs for example. Less business = less hours. Same story in January, holiday season is over and lower sales are expected. Less business = less hours again. There is also a lull in September/October in some areas of the country where hours may be reduced for part-timers

Q: How do I get more hours if they are cut?

A: Cross train in other department and equipment before the cut, making you more available and valuable to plug in to other areas of the store’s schedule. Then ask ask ask (respectfully) the ASDS and salaried leaders for more shifts

Q: Why did scheduled hours go from ____ to zero for a future week after the schedule was published?

A: It’s likely the ASDS pulled back the schedule to make adjustments and forgot to republish. Don’t panic and respectfully go ask the ASDS what’s up. Part time hours may be cut to a very low level, but it’s very rare to go to zero. If you’re full time you cannot be cut to zero without your consent

Q: How do breaks/lunches work for hourly associates?

A: It is very dependent on the state you work in. Generally speaking hourly associates get a break or a lunch every 2 hours. In some states breaks are required by law, some states they are not. Many states require employers to give a lunch break if the associate is going to work 6 hours or more. So bottom line, take your lunch break if you are scheduled for one. You may receive a coaching/counseling (AKA write-up) if you skip a lunch because you may accidentally cause the company to break the labor laws surrounding lunches. 15-minute breaks are paid, lunch breaks are not paid. Search on myApron for "Timekeeping and Payroll" for specific requirements for the state you work in.

Q: What are the best shoes to wear?

A: Search on this sub for the keyword “shoes”. Dozens of posts and recommendations. Or you can make a new post to add to the pile.

Q: What is tuition reimbursement, where can I find out more?

A: Search on myApron for “Tuition Reimbursement”, it’s all laid out there. Short story: Home Depot will reimburse up to a certain amount for approved courses and expenses. The approved courses are typically business related, so no 16th century English literature degrees will be reimbursed. The program has some pretty firm requirements, make sure to read over carefully.

Q: What is ESPP and how does it work?

A: ESPP stands for Employee Stock Purchase Plan. It is managed by a 3rd party called Computershare. Plans run for six months and the enrollment period for the next plan ends a few weeks before it begins, so enroll early. During enrollment, you will choose a percentage of your paycheck that will go towards a stock purchase. The money deducted from your paycheck is set aside into what is essentially an escrow account. At the end of the plan you are enrolled in, the money is then used to purchase that amount of stock at a 15% discount, but you own the full value of the stock. To put it another way, it’s an immediate 15% gain on your money via that amount of stock. The stock is yours free and clear, even if you leave the company. Log in to our benefits website, livetheorangelife.com to learn more. If you have issues logging in, partner with your ASDS

Q: If I leave do, I get paid out for vacation time? What about PTO?

A: Yes, you will get paid out for your vacation time. PTO payouts are dictated by state law, search myApron for “Time off Benefits” and review for your state.

Q: Does PTO carry over from year to year?

A: Depends on your state and its laws. Search myApron for “Time off Benefits” and review for your state

Q: What is Home Depot policy on Marijuana use?

A: Beginning 9/1 THD will no longer test for marijuana use for non-DOT or Aviation associates. DOT certified drivers and aviation associates will still be tested

Q: What if I notice someone doing something illegal or against our business code of conduct and ethics, and I don't want to go to management or it IS a member of management:

A: The awareline exists for these situations. You can call the 1-800 number to report unethical/illegal behavior. It is anonymous, but you will be recorded and the recording may/will be played back to leaders in your store/district/region. There is a portal to submit concerns to avoid a voice recording. Search myApron for "awareline" for the phone number or the portal.
Keep in mind the awareline is for illegal and unethical behaviors, not normal business practices that you may disagree with.

Is it normal?

I've been at the HD for about 6 years now, and while everything up to the last 6 months was good, as of late it's gone to hell.

New Store Manager is verbally aggressive, insulting and making low key threats on the floor. The ASMs have all begun taking their frustrations out on their employees and we have lost over 15 people to 2 week notices and straight up walk outs the last month.

Is this normal?

Home Depot Creator??? Earning commission!

Wow. Just what we need. Saw this as an ad on my FB.

They can start at 8% and earn up to 12% commission just by being a content creator and repping THD products and having ppl buy through their link/storefront. Insane. THD doesn’t need more publicity and marketing. It’s a huge globally known brand name.

Imagine if they paid us specialists/designers & we got 8-12% on our $1million+ in sales each year! Even if we got 1%!!!

Why are we going to pay random influencers instead of the people who are the backbone and actual force behind the brand??

Discuss, gestures hands

How fucked am I

I booked a nonrefundable airline ticket for late spring early summer, my vacation time is paid out right before I go (ok it’s the end of May, I leave on the 22nd come back the 29th was going to take the 21st and 30th off too). How likely am I to not get those dates off? I can work on Memorial Day itself that’s no problem but I’m freaking out.

I hate flooring rant

I don’t know how yall flooring people can do this shit full time, idk I feel like I’ve worked in a handful of departments and yet rn I’m in flooring (hard side) and it just fucking sucks. Like I get customers asking me about specialty shit and I’m just like “I don’t know” or “our specialist isn’t here right now” and then the department overall is just like I don’t understand it and it’s just so much bs stacked on top of other bs. Like I’d much rather be back in either hardware or garden or any of the other departments I know how to work

Another example of how Home Depot is going down hill. Is this a lack of training? Why aren't there training videos on what to rtv? This is a text book example of "RTV ME". Am I expected to hang this by the ziplok bag? This isn't Goodwill, this is Home fucking Depot.

Can someone in management explain this weird-ass dynamic to me?

Doesn't matter how long the employees been there. Just curious:

How come employees who barely get anything done, show up late, call off more than they should, or just generally mess up all the time (or a combination of all of these) get more leniency than employees who go above and beyond, always show up and do their jobs, and almost never call out?

How come if the slacker messes up, they get a slap on the wrist, but when the person who works their asses off and does everything asked of them gets the book thrown at them if they make even one tiny mistake?

I've heard a song and dance about how they're afraid of driving off employees because of staffing, but like....you keep picking on your hard working employees, you're gonna eventually drive them off until you're left with only slackers.

Credit cards

How do you guys get credit cards? I’ve heard of stores doing the whole “if you apply I’ll give you x amount off even if you don’t get approved” but is there other ways to encourage customers to get it?

for a job that loves to try to call me in whenever I'm in the midst of class or busy with other responsibilities I'm surprised this is what they've given me. Am I a bit stressed thinking about how this will affect rent? yeah, a bit, but I'll figure it out somehow; and yes I know, hours are sparse due to it being a slow season and this and that, but I get on avg. 18-26 hrs/wk so this was slightly shocking 🫩 time to see if service desk has any hours they don't want

I am writing a parody book and i want to hear your wildest stories

Hello home depot associates! I had a funny idea for a book based on the store The Home Depot. I got the idea when i was working plumbing, and pictured every aisle as a maze connected with the products i was packing out. I've been talking with my coworkers and my boss about it, and they're excited to see the results of what i come with.

I didn't have time to ask a lot of other associates at my store about some of their funny stories, but i was hoping to come here and ask.

What crazy moments has happened to you while working at The Home Depot?

So what's the point of part time when they schedule you full time hours?

So I decided to apply for a part-time cashier to make some extra money on top of my graveyard and figure cool won't be too bad as long as I'm out by a decent time and only work a few days a week evenings. I get hired and immediately promoted to head cashier and I told them I can only stay till 10:30 and have someone cover me at my other job for those 30 minutes here and there and I want to keep it around 20 to 25 hours. I go to orientation and that all goes out the window, they are scheduling me all over the place and a few of these weeks are pushing 32 hours and even after explaining to them they told me that that's kind of what they expect from their head cashiers my first red flag should have been when they told me at the interview that they've had a hard time keeping a head cashier. Safe to say I'm probably not going back after tonight. There is no way I can do 70 to 75 hour weeks combined I just needed extra income not a second full-time job. Looks like back to gig work for extra income

How do I request vacation pay?

In all these years I have never not taken my vacation, but I'm not going to this year. How do I request the money? I'd ask HR, but I'm not wanting to wait 6 months for a reply. Appreciate the help.

Anyone else's store think its excessive how much rat stuff they're stuff they're putting out?

Obviously with winter moving in alot of rats and mice will start looking for warm places to move into so what does my store do? Bring down more rodent stuff like repellents, traps, and poisons. We have a dedicated bay for them in aisle 42, great! Then came a display of repellents and traps next to the doors into outside garden, then a lowboy across from the display next to the garden doors, then we took down the mosquito repellent shelf that sits in aisle 42 and replacement with more rodent traps, repellents, and poisons! This shelf is in between bay 3 which holds the rodent stuff and the new display, its like I understand that rodents will start to seek refuge soon but is this really necessary? 😅 did i mention the display and lowboy are also in aisle 42 and the display is next to bay 1 which is followed by Bay 3? 🤣🤣🤣

Op regulations (honestly just ranting)

So there's a little confusion, hoping someone higher up that enacts regulations and sop can clarify. A few years back we got notified that we can no longer use 2 people on the orderpicker. That's fine. But a lot of heavy bulky items are handstacked. Appliances, patio doors, lawn mowers, etc. So as an operator i go up to retrieve an item, it's a one person lift, until it's on concrete, then it's a 2 person lift? I'm trying to do corporate math, but it's not mathing. A lazy Susan is a team lift obviously, unless it's 25 feet in the air, then it's a one person lift? It's almost like we say these things to avoid litigation while making policies that contradict it, so we can blame the associates when they get hurt. I would love a corporate sponsor from the our safety videos to demonstrate down stocking the toilet aisle with a ballymore after a busy weekend without calling extra coverage in to do it safely because tonight was 1 person for every 4 departments.

There will never be a day that I believe home depot cares about my safety, they simply care about lawsuits. Until safety policies don't clearly contradict each other you will never convince me it's not a dog and pony show.

behr paint and buckets

what dept packs out the weekly paint pallets at your store is it freight or is it paint dayside? seems to vary by store so i’m curious cause i was dayside but i switched a few months ago to freight for the pay increase and it seems im now stuck doing paint as freight too even tho it was on day shifters to get it done like wtf also buckets who does that at your store paint opener mid or closer? or freight? seems i’m still doing closer tasks as a freight associate and i can’t do it all some nights but if no one else will they expect me to

r/HomeDepot • • 1d ago

This is the key to the future 🙌🏻. We're one step closer to having a kiosk at each aisle to ask questions about products instead of asking us associates😆

Used Sick Time: Still Got an Occurance

Explain how tf this makes any sense, realistically. - Not soulless metric crunching corporate mindset.

I had 7:04hrs of sick time. I’m still in my first 6 month period. No time off accrued, no time off from start of employment. Just 4 measly hours of sick time a month.

I used all my 7:04 of sick time, and still got marked as an unexcused absence and gave me a full occurrence.

56 Minutes = 1 Occurrence?

That clearly shows the SOP/Handbook is completely out of touch with reality. This metric driven company wonders why turnover is so f**king high. They treat people like a spreadsheet.

AH Customer "of" this week

This guy I had yesterday ...

Comes in with some plastic plumbing fixture that had two threaded inlets, two handles (hot and cold) and another threaded outlet on top... So it was a mixing valve/diverter. I asked him what it was for .. "Oh an external shower for an RV" ... I said, well i'm not that plumbing assoc, but I doubt we have anything like that. You can go look and see if you can possibly make something that does the same thing in our parts aisle.

Get there and show him the fittings aisle, and he said to me "Why the FU*K can't you guys just carry what I need, out of the blue, was pleasant until that. Then I need to F*CKing buy tools, to make something up and I'm not even sure it's going to work, how the F*CK am I going to shower tonight, I just want to take a F*CKING shower" ...

I said "sir, let me find you someone in plumbing to help you" He grumpily said Ok..

What I really wanted to say was ...

"The name of the store is Home Depot, not RV Depot, why didn't you go to recreationland or whatever."

So I walked away and related my story to the plumbing assoc, and said you can go help him if you want or you can keep packing down buckets. Up to you.
