I attended the Meet the Candidates event last night in Stoney Creek at the Legion. Hosted by the BIA of downtown Stoney Creek.
Keanin Loomis was the only invited candidate that showed up as well as Scarlett Gillespie who was not invited to participate. Rob Cooper bailed an hour before the event was set to take place and Andrea Horwath declined to attend the day prior. According to the moderator she offered Keanin the chance to pass seeing as he would be the only candidate remaining but he still showed up.
-Despite Scarlett being there and there also being a huge amount of spare time now with Rob no showing, it only made sense to have Scarlett participate. Many in the room including myself advocated for her to be given a platform but the moderator declined and repeatedly told her to sit down and be quiet or be removed. Keanin then said he would give up some of his time at the end to let Scarlett speak to the applause of the room. Despite this, the moderator still did not allow her to participate in answering any questions.
Scarlett sat patiently for almost an hour while Keanin answered about 20 questions. Half of them about taxes, taxes, and more taxes. The question selection was poor to the say the least, they could have cut many of them and allowed Scarlett a chance to participate. Finally at the end Keanin waived his chance to have a closing statement as Scarlett was given only 60 seconds to speak, and then Keanins 60 seconds as well.
-I am extremely disappointed in the BIA for not inviting a candidate with legitimate support across the city, and then furthermore mistreating her when she actually showed up for the community to speak to voters despite there being an obvious chance to offer her time. The moderator was crude, and despite pushback in the room refused to give Scarlett a platform. Many made comments about it on the way out to which she replied "its a lot of work you know if someone thinks they can do it better you organize it next time, be my guest" to which I replied i will gladly take this burden off your hands and run it fairly and democraticly. People spoke to Scarlett after the event and praised her for showing up despite being excluded and for sitting through the Keanin Loomis show to get a chance to speak to voters. I was happy to see some push back in the room and praise for her resolve after it concluded.
-I understand not every candidate can be invited to smaller events. We saw what happened at Cable 14 where at least 6 of the people invited had no business running for mayor. The fact that Rob Cooper no showed last minute and Scarlett did should have been an easy pivot to a moderator hosting a "neutral" event.
-Thats the biggest issue with this event though. This BIA is very biased. They did not allow the Liberal or NDP to set up tents for the by-election during Boots in the Creek, but Jeff Beattie was allowed to and also was given a chance to speak on stage as well as Councillor Matt Francis. If you're a Conservative politician or business you are given more access to the community by the BIA here. They host these events and label them as information and neutral but then behind the scenes obstruct candidates and parties they dont agree with from participating. I was told by an NDP volunteer that the owner of one business accosted them for handing out literature and told them he would kick them out if they kept doing it.
So last night was yet another example of this. Its something Chris Erl wrote about in an article I read yesterday. The Muys-Kuruc circle. Its very much a real thing and it is very much a very undemocratic group. They are also obstructing Ward 5 council candidate Juanita Maldonados campaign. The building Juanita Maldonado rents an office in will not allow her to place one of her signs on the property, they removed her sign and installed a Matt Francis sign instead. I assume the landlord is part of this same circle.
Conservative politicians are creating a rotten culture downtown and residents should stand up and vote against their undemocratic practices moving forward. The community deserves better, unbiased leadership representing it.
