SPOILERS Pan's Labyrinth 20th anniversary. Your thoughts on the ending?

I watched Pan’s Labyrinth for the first time during the 20th anniversary re-release. I really loved it! It might be my new favorite del Toro.

For the ending, I belive all the dark fantasy parts were a fragment of Ofelia's imagination as a way to cope... It definitely makes her death hit harder for me.

But my question is what do you all think? Was it real or just her imagination? I like that it leaves us with making our own choice on what we believe.

Rewatched the masterpiece that is Pan's Labyrinth 13 years later, I previously misinterpreted the happenings around 3rd task Spoiler

The Faun says the portal requires the blood of an innocent. At the time, with Ofelia shot and bleeding, I interpreted it "ah, Ofelia is an innocent soul hence her blood works too. So beautiful". Somehow I missed the dialogue after then so ofc after last night rewatching in theaters I saw what was actually said after, and how Ofelia's kind rule is the total opposite of her stepfather's tyranny. While I find my previously misinterpreted happening beautiful, I guess the actual happening relates better to what's needed for one to benevolently rule her people

Was Pan's Labyrinth 3D Re-release's Intro in 3D?

I dont know if it was my theater or not, but the intro wasnt 3D but was presented like I should have been.

When Guillermo was talking about the 3D and the scenes were popping up throughout the intro, it looked like they should have been 3D.

Also a couple subtitles popped up and they looked blurry.

Should i watch Shape of Water or not?

just watched the original Creature from the Black Lagoon and since Guillermo famously said it was his inspiration for SoW, I’ve put it on my watchlist. only thing i can’t cope with is graphic masturbation scenes and dead cats, just wondering if this film has either of those things.

Doug Jones & Ivana Baquero's talk about how the first scene they shot together was the movie's last

An interview Jones and Baquero did to promote the 20th anniversary rerelease of Pan's Labyrinth. They talk about the shooting their first scene together, which is near the end of the movie. Del Toro said that the crew giggled when they first saw Jones as the Faun, which stressed him out bc he was afraid people wouldn't get the film. It all worked out though!

The "art" version of this beautiful screen print without the title text has been sold out since the print was originally released, but it seems like it's in stock at the moment. Maybe they found some additional prints in their archive?

SPOILERS Pickman's Model on Netflix reveals the ENTIRE problem with most Lovecraft adaptations ... Spoiler

The plot of this adaptation in Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities is mostly an in-name-only revision of the story, but that's somewhat understandable given its unusual POV.

However, what is not okay is failing in every way to communicate the horror of the unexplained. In THIS story, the main character sees demons everywhere in connection to a depiction of a witch's coven. This refocuses the story onto her, completely, and optically diverts the definition of reality away from the story's true revelation: this subject is REAL.

From this version, there is no way to know that the demon in the basement is real because we've been hallucinating weird creatures the whole time, nor is there much reason to think that's significant. This version might as well be called "Pickman's Paintings" or "Legacy of the Witch" or something.

The entire premise of capturing the liminality of great evil in the crevice of the world and that being almost too horrifying to bear, is TOTALLY undermined by the narrative of these paintings turning people into "demons." I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, but I'm shocked it's THIS far off on a comprehension level.
