THE RANT:
I've been using my Google Pixel with Google Messages without problem for years. I've been getting increasing warnings recently because my Google Storage is 97% full (the 15GB free they give you for having a google account). But this is BY DESIGN. It's inevitable because of their stupid design and missing features, and they HAVE to know that.
So here's the problem. Google Messages are automatically backed up to Google Storage. This INCLUDES all media sent through messages. So effectively, every photo or video I've ever sent or BEEN sent with this phone is backed up to my google storage, EVEN IF I DIDNT SAVE/DOWNLOAD THEM TO MY DEVICE. There is also no way to delete them from backup storage. I cannot access that storage to go through the phone backup data there and decide what to keep. I can only do so for photos/google drive/gmail, but not for phone backup.
There are some people saying online you can go to the conversation details and see all the media that has been sent in that conversation, then hold to select and delete them all. That is no longer true. I have tried it, I can get to that screen, but can no longer select and delete the media from that screen. The ONLY way to do that is to go through the conversation, scroll up, and individually delete each and every message/media. ALSO, Google for some reason does not give us the ability to auto-delete messages after a set number of messages or time period (i.e. delete messages older than X number of days). The only other solution I've been able to find is to delete the entire conversation/group chat and start a new one. Even though other android messaging apps still have that feature, and I do not want to lose recent conversations.
So that's what Google has designed. Ever text/picture/video in every conversation gets backed up in perpetuity, with no reasonable way to access, manage, or delete them, and then SURPRISE! Your limited free storage is full! Better pay us a subscription for more!
THE REQUEST
I've temporarily installed Textra and have used it to delete all messages past 200 most recent in each conversation. I've also seen online that I should disable RCS messaging in Google Messages before swapping to making Textra my default texting app, in order to accomplish this. In theory, this should have cleared the messages from my phone, and the backup should sync with this and delete the stored messages/media from my backup. Then I can go back to using Google Messages (which I prefer on all other usability considerations). However, it's been a week and my Google Storage has not dropped, even through all the old messages appear deleted when viewed from Textra.
IS there another solution that I havent tried? Am I wrong about anything here? Has anyone else figured out how to make this work? Is there a way to force a sync? Any help would be appreciated.
