This month: Advance Wars

Just play regular campaign, Advanced Campaign is next level stuff and I'm not going to require that. Lol. We also won't be messing with the final Rivals! mission, which has to be unlocked in a very specific way. Definitely check it out if you're not familiar, but we won't do it for points this month.

Campaign mode is available after you complete Field Training. If you're already familiar with the game and you don't want to do Field Training, just tell Nell that you don't want to do it, and then you can finish just the last mission to unlock Campaign.

Choose any mission path you want to when you have a choice.

half point: Complete the third mission in Campaign (Air Ace) and have Max join your team.
1 point: Complete the Kanbei's Error? mission in Campaign.
2 points: Complete the Final Battle mission in Campaign. (must be completed and posted in October.)

Games Native Super Smash Land PORT for GBA

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been working on a native GBA port of the game *Super Smash Land*, and it’s nearly finished (I know the game was originally intended for the classic Game Boy, but running it on that hardware is virtually impossible). I realize this might not generate a huge buzz, as it’s not a game many people remember, but ever since it came out, I’ve been dying to see it running on real hardware—so I felt the time was right to give it a shot and share it with you all. I’ve tested it on an emulator and it works, as well as on real hardware (as shown in the video) using a SuperCard MiniSD (I’m not sure how it performs with other flashcards). If this post gets a positive response, I’ll release the FULL ROM next week.

Just a quick note: I want to give credit to the original creator, Dan Fornace, who made the game for PC. https://www.supersmashland.com/ I hope you enjoy it!

Shopping/Haul Went to a used game shop in Japan

Went to a secondhand shop near me to look at SPs. Rough conversions at today's rate (160 yen to the dollar):

- Famicom color SP, console only, 66,000 yen (about $410)

- Pearl Pink, boxed, 60,500 yen (about $380)

- Onyx Black, boxed, 55,000 yen (about $345)

- Boktai "Django Red", scratched, 55,000 yen (about $345)

- Toys R Us limited, scratched, 55,000 yen (about $345)

- Onyx Black / Pearl Blue / Platinum Silver, console only, with scratches, 29,700 yen each (about $185)

The handwritten notes on the tags say things like "scratches on the body" and "mint". A scratched SP was around 5,000 yen (about $30) here not that many years ago.

Modded so I made an unforgettable gift

I have been married for a few years to an incredible woman. She is a huge fan of two things: Pokémon and Cardcaptor Sakura.

I enjoy researching Nintendo products—I have a small collection myself; nothing rare or particularly expensive, but I like learning about limited and rare editions out of pure curiosity.

During one of these searches, I stumbled upon a Japan-exclusive model themed around Cardcaptor Sakura. Without a second thought, I sent some images to my wife, and she mentioned that she would love to own one someday. After looking up the price, I realized that this model is not only rare but also extremely expensive—once you factor in exchange rates and taxes, it would cost as much as an economy car in my country.

That’s when I had an idea: I managed to get a good deal on a transparent Game Boy Color. It was in rough shape—the screen was burnt out, the shell had been cut for a battery mod, and it had yellowed with age. It was the perfect candidate for a birthday gift project. I began my research and planning in January; her birthday is in October.

I managed to find a replica of the limited-edition shell, but the quality didn't meet my standards, and it would have required further cutting to accommodate another key part of the project: an IPS screen.

I ended up buying a white shell that was already pre-cut for an IPS screen mod, with a battery compartment ready for a future battery upgrade. My original plan was to add themed laser engravings, but there was a snag: none of the 80+ laser-engraving companies I contacted were able to do the job. My wife’s best friend suggested an alternative: high-quality domed (resined) stickers, which would allow my wife to customize it herself.

For this project, I used a laminated IPS screen with a pink glass lens and an illuminated logo. A pink Wii wrist strap, an EZ Flash Junior with a full set of GB/GBC games, and a transparent pink pair of headphones to complete the set. And to top it all off: a replica sticker based on the original version, and a custom-made unbleached cotton bag. She really liked it.

Managed to snag an $8 Functioning Game Boy, $13 for a SNES controller and two GB games, as well as two vintage PC titles. The GB has some vertical lines, but that's super easy to fix.

I'd love to hear your thoughts. The Nintendo Game Boy Color Grape has had its screen replaced with an LCD screen, the Nintendo Game Boy Color Teal has its original screen, and the Game Boy Advance SP AGS-101 also has its original screen. Which one do you think has the best picture quality? I prefer the GBA. The GBC Teal has a very dark screen, although you can't really tell from the photo.

Mod/Modding SP 001 - ITA vs AliExpress "AGS-101" screen

Looking to upgrade my ags-001 screen and after trying an IPS screen on my original GBA I'm thinking of going for an ITA or possibly one of those recreated AGS-101 screens from AliExpress if anyone's tried them as I prefer the original feel of the older screens.

Anyone who's tried both have any preference in the two?

Thanks

Ribbon cable is situated ok, connections seem clean, game does not start even if the Nintendo logo is clear. Unsure what to do from here.
I can post pictures of my circuit board and my soldering in the replies. I'll do that soon.

Edit:
Some more info:

I'm using Ikea Lada batteries, I have both the 1900 and 2450s

I have tested the old screen again, it gives the same glitch on that one (pictures are in the replies)

Boxy Pixel aluminium shell, laminated screen, brass buttons and custom CNC-cut brass lettering that I made myself.

Even the brass flash cartridge got a custom treatment.

A different take on the classic DMG. What do you think?

Troubleshooting Donkey Kong screen flicker/pulsing

Its hard to see in the video. But this is the only game in my library that does this. Is this normal for Donkey Kong for the game boy to have a pulsing/flashing screen interference on a game boy pocket?. The game has a new battery pre installed from ebay. Its really weird no other game gives me this ripping pulsing/flashing screen interference effect

Questions Repro GBA cardridges

I found my old DS Lite, which has a slot for GBA cartridges. I’d really love to play the old Pokémon games—Emerald, Pearl, etc.—but the prices for the cartridges are incredibly high. I know I could just use an emulator, but I think you all know that holding the actual DS in your hands feels way better than emulating the game. I’m wondering: if I just get a reproduction cartridge, will it work reliably? I’ve heard that there are often issues with saving the game. I’d appreciate some tips from people who have experience with this!

Troubleshooting Any way of fixing a "sensitive" cartridge?

Thumbnail

I bought this second hand Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team in Japan about a year ago and it works without a problem except one. I play on a gameboy advance sp and with this console the cartridge is inserted from the front instead of the other game boys where it's inserted at the back. I have a tendency to fidget and get impulses to squeeze and lightly bend the gameboy while playing (nothing so strong that the console breaks though). This is never an issue except for when I'm playing this cartridge. If I bend the console while playing this cartridge the game will freeze. I think this is just the nature of older second hand products to not be in mint condition (this was one of the cheaper products available) but still, if it can be fixed that would be great. Is there any way of fixing this or does an expert have to fix it? Or maybe I should just unlearn this specific tick.

Questions Help me estimate value for a VGA graded Game Boy (CIB)

Post image
• Upvotes

I just got this DMG-01 bundle authenticated by VGA. There was a rip in the cellophane so they wouldn't grade it sealed, but they just started authenticating CIB. As this is a new service from VGA, I couldn't find any comps for a CIB graded Game Boy. Does anyone have any comps for this or can infer value?

Questions Can the Play-Yan ROM be made to function on a GBA flashcart?

Hello!
I know the Play-Yan relies on its dedicated decoding hardware (Alphamosaic VC01PXX-ES2) for MP3/MPEG-4 playback, and that standard flashcarts can't emulate that. I also know GBE+ now emulates the full experience on PC.

But I'm curious: has anyone attempted a ROM hack or partial bypass to at least get the menu / minigames working on a flashcart (Everdrive, EZ-Flash, etc.)? Even a stripped-down version that skips the media decoding but lets you browse the SD card and play the downloadable minigames would be interesting.

I saw Shonumi mention in 2020 that "it's possible to forcibly bypass a lot of those checks" has that research progressed since then, or is it still completely out of reach for a flashcart context?
Thanks!

I don't plan to mod my original DMG ever, because I want to keep it pure and unaltered. So if I wanna play in the dark, I'm gonna use what was used to do just that back in the day. Call it larping, but I just think it's cool

Finished my perfect GBA to daily drive. AGS-101 screen mod that I did way back when IPS screen kits did not exist yet, blue power LED, Funnyplaying everything else basically, shell, buttons, rubbers. Holographic stickers and glass. Also swapped my copy of Emerald's shell to one that matches the GBA, seeing as that's all I'm playing these days.
