Fiona Apple Rocks books that are fiona apple coded??

was just listening to “I know” and it’s sounds like the bell jar for sure. anything else? it doesn’t have to be necessarily sad girl - sad person; complex emotions emotional depth that kinda thing. hurt. neglected needs. a mother who didn’t give you that love that you deserved that kinda thing.

Edit: if anyone comes across this post after this edit, please add a song the rec sounds like. Or to any of the recs below!!

Fiona Apple Rocks I directed Fiona's "Pretrial (Let Her Go Home)" video. The campaign is up for an Anthem Award and could use some help from this community.

Hey everyone,

I'm the director of Fiona's music video for Pretrial (Let Her Go Home). I've lurked around this subreddit for a while, and figured this was a good reason to actually post something.

The video was made as part of a larger campaign with Zealous called Let Her Go Home, which advocates for ending pretrial detention which is the practice of keeping people in jail before they've been convicted of anything, often simply because they can't afford bail.

The campaign goes beyond the music video, connecting people with court-watching organizations, bail funds, and groups like Free Black Mamas DMV that are doing the actual work on the ground.

Anyway, the campaign has been nominated for an Anthem Award in the Human & Civil Rights category, and there's a public vote happening right now.

I know Reddit isn't exactly the place people come to be asked to vote for things, but I'm really proud to have been part of this project, and I'd love to see the campaign get some more attention. I also know how much this community cares about Fiona and the things she chooses to put her energy behind.

If you have a minute, you can vote on the Anthem Awards website! Just find Let Her Go Home under the Human & Civil Rights (non-profit) category and hit the Celebrate button.

Thanks, and happy to answer any questions about making the video if anyone's curious. It was a pretty special project to be involved in.

I'm partial to the "Fast as You Can" video since it was the first time I had seen or heard her, but she has a lot of other good ones.

Fiona Apple Rocks Fiona Apple Essay & The Industry Finally Catching Up to Her

Hey everyone!!!

A little over a month ago, I wrote an essay on Substack about Fiona’s career, and I’d love to share it with people who care about her as much as I do. Fiona is my favorite artist of all time, and my Substack is actually named after her (it’s called "Hard to Know" after the line in “Left Alone," which is my favorite song of hers).

The main argument is that the qualities critics now celebrate in Fiona, her refusal to make herself more sellable, her insistence on writing exactly what she wants, and her raw vulnerability, were all there from the beginning. What changed wasn’t her, it was the industry’s willingness to accept them. I go through a few key moments in Fiona's career: the “Criminal” video and the SPIN cover, the infamous 1997 VMAs speech, Roseland in 2000, the Extraordinary Machine saga and the Free Fiona campaign, and finally the critical reversal around The Idler Wheel and Fetch the Bolt Cutters.

I also look at how Fiona herself has reframed some of these moments over the years, like her take on Roseland in 2012 and her revision of “there’s no hope for women” in 2018 (which makes me emotional to think about).

If that kind of analysis is your thing, I’d really appreciate it if you gave it a read! I’d also love to hear what I missed. Are there other moments in her career that fit this pattern, or places where you think I got it wrong??

Thanks so much!!!

She’s been one of my top 5 since I was 13 and Tidal came out, and it’s always been a dream to see her, but I know she doesn’t tour. Think it might happen?

Fiona Apple Rocks The albums and the four seasons

I heavily associate each album with a certain season.

Tidal makes me think of winter. Something about the slow and heavy nature of most of the songs plus the white and blue of the album cover.

When the Pawn... is extremely autumnal. All those weird rhythms, spooky keyboards, and at times ominous strings, it's borderline Halloween-y.

Extraordinary Machine and Fetch the Bolt Cutters both make me think of spring. EM because it has the airest, poppiest songs of Fiona's career and because of the album cover, and FTBC because I will always associate it with the spring of 2020 and being stuck in quarantine.

The Idler Wheel... is a summer album to me. It feels extremely hot and dry, and it was released in the summer of 2012, a particularly hot summer in my memory.

~For the caged bird sings of freedom~

—I’ve been in here too long.
30x40 • Oil

I’m not going to write a dissertation on what this woman means to me,
But I could,
But I won’t.
For the reader’s sake.
I will say, though, there have been many times in my life now,
Where I had nothing.
Except for Fiona’s
Words,
voice,
and strength.
And that was certainly enough.
And so
I’m forever grateful

Thank you Fiona
A stentorian voice
for people incarcerated pre-trial
For pit-bulls
And for anyone else who takes the time to listen.

Fiona Apple Rocks give me some songs and/or lyrics that represent unrequited love

something along the lines of a "situationship." as if you were more than friends but less than lovers. the pain that creeps right into your heart where some warmth should''ve been. I want to feel soothed, but shaken at the same time. I know tons of fiona's songs but perhaps there's something I've missed? please just drop a few so we can all sob in our awfully wretched existence.

Fetch the Bolt Cutters ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING FTBC 🚨🚨‼️

Fiona Apple’s 6th studio album, Fetch The Bolt Cutters, has officially been BANNED from my car’s stereo.

After multiple violent incidents regarding road law, and the safety of other road users, the One-Of-The-Greats council has decided to deny playing access to FTBC while I am driving.

The album resulted in 7 road incidents, 5 of which had me as the main holder of responsibility.

We hope to see an improvement in my driving ability moving forward.

Fetch the Bolt Cutters Love an artist who just keeps growing as a person. It's like watching a life unfold going through her discography start to end. Some (many) thoughts on FTBC

Listening to FTBC, and seeing how her discography has evolved stylistically and thematically over the years, there is something so comforting and inspiring about the personal growth and outlook on life you see develop over decades.

After studying art in college and getting a lot more serious and conceptual about it, my favorite way to engage with art of any kind has really become a lot more about looking at how it fits into the context of an artist's life and whole body of work.

You always see ideas develop and solidify over years and it gives you a ton of perspective into what the work actually means to the artist. You get to hear a kind of wisdom that only comes from experience and reflection. FTBC specifically, changed my outlook on life and mentally aged me like at least 5 years when i first listened to it. Like a slap in the face from your mother as she tells you exactly how little you understand life and how narrow-minded your world is as a child.

There's this artist, chris burden, who made all these masochistic, self punishing performance pieces in university (literally getting shot in the arm, or crucified to the top of a VW Buggy). The kind of work me and every angsty art student has thought of as the "meaningful" stuff, the deep stuff. And the irony and beauty of his body of work is this absurd transition later in life towards making these joyful, family friendly, whimsical miniature metropolis-es. He was in his 20s getting shot as a performance, and in his 60s building glorified hot wheels courses.

And it gave me this indescribable hope for the future and realization that the good in life is ALL that matters. What you make of pain, matters because it should be good. The hurt you've suffered, matters because you can heal from it. Life itself, matters because it has love and joy and human connection with strangers.

I see so much of this artistic growth in FTBC, and across her discography. You look at tidal and when the pawn and they're these great powerful works of pain and hurt and anger, and I'm drawn to them and many people are because of the impulse to stew in that pain, validate that resentment. You see a lot more healing and a desire to move forward with extraordinary machine and idler wheel, but something is stuck sometimes in that past.

But then you listen to Relay and it's this punch in the gut, staring down that impulse and cutting through everything, straight down to a fundementally human culture of rhythm and chant. I think the percussion in the album, as great as it all is, serves it's purpose most in just cutting through all the bullshit of history and classicism, down to the very soul and essence of being human.

The whole album is just so much more nuanced imo than her younger works. You can see this journey of pain and hurt, being held down by the past, stuck as the one with righteous anger who never gets to just enjoy living for youself. You can see the years it takes to heal the soul, to develop a perspective that moving forward matters, for yourself and for the people you care about, for strangers you could otherwise help and connect with.

The album has anger but everytime it is expressed, it stops being about just the artist, just Fiona. It's not about what in the past was right or wrong, what should have happened, how it made her feel. It's an album centered on how to move forward and how to heal with compassion for the people that you can still be there for. There's no trite "forgiveness is a virtue", because some things are unforgivable, but it will tell you bluntly that you're only hurting yourself and shutting out others when you hold onto the pain of being wronged so tightly.

Ladies and newspaper are without a doubt some of the most nuanced songs I've ever heard in terms of message. A serious listen to this album is as productive and nuanced as reading a bell hooks book about the role of love in feminism. Hell, just the line 'There's a dress in the closet. Don't get rid of it, you look good in it. I never fit in it. It was never mine, it belonged to an ex wife of another ex of mine. She left it behind with a note, one line, it said "I don't know if I'm coming across but I'm really trying." She was very kind.' is amazing. It's poetry doing what poetry should. (Sure, I'm a gay man so I can't speak much about how it resonates with women, but I've had my share of gender troubles and the outlook she has on it all is so intelligent and compassionate)

I listened to the album during lockdown after my high-school English teacher recommended it. I had only heard fiona apple on a cover of another song at that point. I was an extremely angsty, mentally ill, closeted teen living with my very traditional parents 24/7 and just stewing in resentment and really justifiable anger. I felt awful, and thinking about how unfair it was and how I wasn't in the wrong only made it worse and I loved making it worse. 5 songs in, relay played and that line about resentment, entering the endless race, then the repetition of the "chorus", hit me so hard I started sobbing. It reached into my soul at a time where I was nowhere near old enough or experienced enough in life to see the way my resentment was killing me, and just told me in no uncertain terms to grow the fuck up and keep moving for the sake of myself, or live forever in pain and miss out on everything.

This album will always mean so much to me, and I wanted to share my very longwinded thoughts and appreciation for the art of it all. To this day, I still like to make art about my emotions and the struggle of it, but it keeps me pushing myself to try to think past it, deeper into what I want out of my art practice long term. It keeps me coming back to ideas of human connection when I'm so often concerned with the self.
