Looking For A Distro I want to find a Linux distro based on Ubuntu but with clean Gnome. No snapd at all. Is there any? Not Debian with Gnome. Based on Ubuntu. Nor VanillaOS because it's immutable.

What the best linux distro for gaming on old thinkpad (x220)?

I want to run a specific game (rimworld) on thinkpad x220 that I have. Latest steam version has better performance. I also want to play some other "light" games like factorio or OpenTTD

My specs:

Intel core I5-2450M 2.5 GHz

6 gb of ddr3 ram

Drive: Samsung ssd on 128 gb. (samsung mz7td128hafv-000l1)

I'm stuck between Linux mint and Catchy Os. Maybe some of you can help me?

For me, ease of installation (I’ll be using Ventoy) and out-of-the-box functionality for Steam and games are important.

Looking For A Distro I've been trying different Linux distros to find the one I like most. What would you recommend?

I'm currently trying different Linux distros until I find one that I really like. So far, I've tried Ubuntu, Fedora, and EndeavourOS.

Here's what I think about each one:

Ubuntu

- Simple and beginner-friendly.

- Comes with more built-in features and customisations than vanilla GNOME.

- Feels like a complete desktop experience right out of the box.

Fedora Workstation

- Offers a relatively up-to-date Linux experience.

- Uses GNOME with fewer customisations compared to Ubuntu.

- Feels closer to vanilla GNOME while still being user-friendly.

EndeavourOS

- I really like its appearance, especially KDE Plasma.

- Offers lots of customisation options.

- However, I encountered a few issues while trying it. Maybe some of them were caused by using the live environment instead of installing it, but I'm not sure.

I'm still a beginner with Linux, and I'm enjoying exploring different distros and desktop environments. I haven't decided which one to settle on yet.

I'd like to know:

- Which distro would you recommend for someone like me?

- Are the issues I encountered with EndeavourOS likely to disappear after installation, or could they persist?

- Is EndeavourOS worth using as a daily driver, or would Fedora or Ubuntu be a better choice?

- What other distros do you think I should try?

I'd appreciate your honest opinions and experiences. I'm interested in real-world user experiences, not just distro rankings!

Which Linux distribution would you recommend for switching from Windows and for further use?

I often play games, sit in the browser, make a 2D game for Godot, and generally do other everyday tasks.

Looking For A Distro Spaced Linux 10.26.3 out. Now with perfect Windows Networking.

We had almost everything else working perfectly before, but the samba/windows networking stack was still in development. It's perfect now. This distro runs in < 1gb of ram. It is the prettiest, fastest, cleanest distro possible as it is built on devuan ceres, with compiz. It has built in themes that can make it look like Windows, Mac, or several other options. The ISO is < 1.6gb. It has a real time voice assistant that can search the web, move files, dictate in libre office or email, and also control every other aspect of the desktop.

Come on in boys. The water's fine!

Looking For A Distro Looking for out-of-the-box Linux distro for Lenovo Legion 5 (Battery life, GPU switching & Gaming)

Hey, some time ago I bought a new laptop. Specs: Model: Lenovo Legion 5 OLED 10TH (15AHP10) Screen: 15” 2560x1600 165Hz OLED OS: W11 PRO 24H2 (ATLAS OS 5) Drive 1: SKHYNIX_HFS512GEM4X182N (NVME 4.0x4 2242 512GB) Drive 2: LEXAR MN620 1TB (NVME 3.0x4 2280) CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 260 RAM: 16+8GB (Micron + Samsung) GPU0: RADEON RX 780M (iGPU) GPU1: GEFORCE RTX 5060 Max-Q 8GB (130W) PSU: 245W Lenovo Brick Wi-Fi Card: Realtek 8922AE Wi-Fi 7 NIC

And I switched from:

Model: ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 (AMD) Screen: 14” Multi-touch And Privacy Guard OS: Nobara 43 (KDE Ed.) Drive: Lexar MN620 1TB CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U RAM: Samsung 32 GB 3200MHz CL22 GPU: Vega 7 (iGPU) PSU: 65W / 135W (from Ultra Dock 40AJ)

I really enjoyed using Nobara on the ThinkPad For a few months, but on the Legion, it has trouble running in a dual-boot setup—as do other distributions (there's an issue with installing the bootloader).

My requirements for a distribution: stable, out-of-the-box experience with no post-installation configuration needed (since I'm not good at tweaking those things) unless there's a script that handles it without breaking the distro right away. I also want to use this laptop as a portable laptop, so it needs to have good battery life, functional GPU switching, and Windows game emulation that runs with similar performance.

Looking For A Distro Help me decide my daily driver distro

Hey all,

I'm heavily considering the jump from Windows to Linux for my daily driver. I'm really only familiar with headless Linux, as I run multiple homelab servers using Linux.

However, I have no idea where to start for my desktop that I use for different things. I'd greatly appreciate some guidance on this before I make this jump.

I use my desktop for playing various games like Valheim and the occasional random Steam game. Steam is my main game library.

Now, one big game I don't want to lose is Microsoft Flight Simulator (via Microsoft Store) and some of its third-party components. I have some peripherals (mostly WinWing/WinCTRL components) that are mounted to my desk.

I'm also a software developer and use JetBrains IDEs and occasionally Visual Studio (not VS Code) for C# and .NET/MAUI development.

I also run a Jellyfin server and rip CDs using MakeMKV and HandBrake for encoding.

I think that about sums up my daily driver. What would you guys recommend?

Framework user ditching windows.

Hi all, I've finally decided to de-windows my life and move to Linux. I have a framework 13 that I want to move over that is my daily machine. I want a Linux distro that will be compatible with TWAIN drivers (if that exists?) because I have a legacy scanner that I want to use. I have one old laptop that I've installed Ubuntu on, and I thought that it was a nice experience. My goal is to just get something that works. I've mostly looked at Ubuntu and Kubuntu so far, but I would love all of your recommendations.

Also - does anyone know about a quick share app for Linux like the one on windows?

Looking For A Distro I yearn for stability!!

Hi, first time posting here yay!!
So, anyways, I've been using cachyos for like 2 ish months and I love it. Everything works nicely aside from the usual linux troubleshooting.
But I've realized recently that what I want is stability.
I know arch/cachy has "bleeding edge" stuff but i still dont know what thats supposed to mean, and thats made me realize that I fell for the arch propaganda.
All I want is a stable distro that just lets me play videogames and not spend 2 hours troubleshooting downloading some niche 32 bit libraries.
Any suggestions? I've used fedora kde before and that was pretty nice, I also thought of debian because I always hear it in the stability conversation, and I don't know about openSUSE but I've heard thats stable.

Looking For A Distro Any good Linux distro for my Chromebook?

So first time posting here as I thought it would be the right place (hopefully 😅 if it isn't I can delete the post) so I have a Chromebook which have 64gb of storage and 4gb of ram with Intel(R) Celeron(R) N4020 CPU @ 1.10GHz (2 threads, 2.800GHz) I copied it from the settings :')

I was wondering if there's any good Linux distro for these specs :D I was going to try Linux mint but I'm not sure if it would be good 🤔

Also I have a USB key of 8gb

Looking For A Distro Gaming.

Hey all,

I’ve used Linux before, so I’m not a newbie, but I’m done with distro tinkering. I just want to install something, have NVIDIA work properly, and play games without having to fix things every other week. Trying to escape windows with the agentic changes coming

My setup is a Ryzen 7 5700X, 16GB RAM and an RTX 4060.

What I’m after:

  • Looks decent and modern out of the box
  • Gaming-ready without much setup
  • Solid NVIDIA support
  • Anything but KDE. I really can’t stand it
  • Nothing immutable or atomic (had issues with it)

GNOME, Cinnamon, XFCE, whatever, as long as it isn’t Plasma and stays out of my way. I’m happy to hear what people recommend.

If anyone’s running similar hardware, especially a 40-series card, what are you using and are you happy with it? Cheers!

Best Linux distro for ASUS ROG G752VM? Hardware Compatibility Is My Main Concern

Hey everyone!

I'm currently running Pop!_OS on my ASUS ROG G752VM, but I'm interested in hearing your opinions on which Linux distro works best with this laptop's hardware.

I'm not new to Linux, and I'm comfortable with both Arch- and Debian-based distros. I picked up this laptop from an old post, and I've already had to do quite a bit of tinkering to get some of the hardware working properly.

My specs:

- Laptop: ASUS ROG G752VM

- CPU: Intel Core i7-6700HQ

- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

- RAM: 32GB

- OS drive: 250GB NVMe SSD

- Data drive: 2TB

- Games drive: 1TB SSD

- Current distro: Pop!_OS

My biggest concern isn't really gaming performance, but hardware compatibility and proper support for this specific laptop.

I've had to spend quite a bit of time getting the ELAN touchpad drivers working and figuring out the keyboard backlight. I'd like to know if another distro offers better out-of-the-box support for the NVIDIA GPU and drivers, touchpad, keyboard backlight, function keys, and other laptop-specific features.

I'd also love to find a reliable fan-control application, since the thermals aren't great. The laptop can sit around 60°C shortly after booting, so I'd like better control over fan curves and cooling, if the hardware supports it.

Would you recommend sticking with Pop!_OS or switching to something like EndeavourOS, CachyOS, Fedora, or another distro?

If you own this laptop or a similar ASUS ROG model, I'd especially appreciate hearing which distro you use and whether you managed to get everything working without extensive manual configuration.

I'm looking for the best overall hardware support, not just the distro with the best gaming benchmarks.

Thanks!

Looking for a distro

I recently bought an IdeaPad S145-15AST. It came with 16gb of RAM and a 500 SSD. It has Windows 11 installed. I was wondering what distro I should pick for this since there are so many distros out there.

Edit: Decided to try Fedora KDE. Thanks everyone for recommendations.

Edit2: Fedora KDE was good for customizations but I had problems. (Example: recording a single window acts weird and the program I found from searching Discover to test an EXE game didn't work.) I switched to Linux Mint (Debian Edition) and it fixed my problem.

I need a new distro for my laptop

I have been using linux for about a year or so, I went from Windows 11 > Nobara > Arch (Cealestia) > Nobara + Pop!_os on my laptop. I love Nobara for my desktop, but I have some issues with cosmic on my laptop and I just want something new. I was thinking about switching to Omarchy or going back to Cealestia, but I'm not 100% sure I want to run arch.

I just want a distro that runs well on a laptop, works for light gaming, and looks decent. Something fedora based would be great, but anything is fine. Optimally, it should have a good balance between using UI when possible, but I can use the terminal fine whenever needed.

Looking For A Distro Linux Distro for an old timer as a Windows replacement

I would like to ask you fine folks what Linux Distro you would recommend as a 'as close as possible' to Windows replacement.

My Dad (84) has been on Windows his entire life, and is one of those typical old guys that doesn't like change too much. He recently expressed that he would like to dabble in possibly switching to Linux (due to Microslop issues), but he doesn't want to learn absolutely everything from scratch.

My personal opinion is Zorin, as I've heard it is a good replacement. Would you agree, or is there something more suitable out there?

I would also like to find out if Outlook runs on Linux (I've never tested it, because I don't like Outlook personally) as the old man loves his Outlook, or is there something similar out there that you can port your Inbox rules over easily?

Personally, I'm on Omarchy Quattro currently, and have been between Arch variants and Mint my whole life, and as such, don't have the best advice for someone new to Linux.
