Venting The bot comments are getting stupider.

Twice now, I’ve had bot comments that couldn’t even get the names of the character in the fics rights. Like I’ll be writing for the iron lung, project Hail Mary, and the fall guy fandoms, and they’ll start talking about some guy named Leon. None of those fandom‘s have a guy named Leon in it, and no OCs

I mean, at least that means it’s less likely they fed my hard work into some AI, but all my stories are locked. How are bots getting AO3 accounts?

Celebrate An author that I really admire commented on my work!

You know that amazing feeling when a big author in your fandom notices you? It just happened to me!

I just recognized a comment on my new fic as belonging to the same author who wrote a huge collection of one-shots that I loved! I feel so honored to be acknowledged by a big writer in my fandom! 😁😁😁

Writing Questions How do you write your stories?

• Upvotes

I'll be honest im not entirely sure where to begin.

I have the basic premise down, introduction, overall premise, and characters. I'm just not sure if I'm supposed to have a plan or just improvise a story.

Do people usually start by planning out their story or do you all just put words on a page and let your fingers go?

Also where do you write? I was about to put it on docs but I feel like that's similar to writing an essay on carbord

Activities and Events Excerpt game: Excerpts that DON'T contain the word (but relate to it)

  1. Leave a top-level comment with a word, any word.
  2. Reply to top-level comments with an excerpt (try not to go over 600 words) that is about the idea behind that word, or relates to that word somehow, but does not contain that specific word!

Suppose the top-level comment word is 'run.'

You can share an excerpt where you very directly write that a character dashes down the road, but you happened to use the word 'dash' instead of 'run.'

Or, you could share an excerpt where you describe a character's racing breath and pounding heartbeat and working legs, all without ever using the word 'run.'

There could be a lot of ways to interpret this, approach it however you want! It's best to explain what you're going for if you think it could be unclear. For example, suppose the word is 'run,' and you want to share an excerpt where a character is running his mouth (and you never write the word 'run'). It would be helpful to explain why you're posting a snippet about a character talking a lot under the word 'run.'

Additional thoughts. Please:

  • Use content warnings as needed, and link to NSFW excerpts instead of posting them directly.
  • Leave some nice comments (no concrit unless requested) for other writers! At minimum, if possible, for each top-level word that you post, respond to at least one excerpt posted under it. You don't have to engage with content you aren't comfortable with, but please be open to leaving a nice comment on writing that may not be your preferred genre or fandom!

It's not wrong at all to do the minimum! People will have limited time and energy for plenty of reasons. But if you can do more and choose to do more, let's celebrate! I'm going to try something new & leave a top-level comment where you can celebrate if you leave a nice comment on five excerpts or more ❤️

Writing Questions Common insults in English?

I need some for my fic! I need some to describe a dramatic person, who is very annoyingly and reckless

If you know creative ones please share them, I'll pay you with my thanks

Edit: they're from teenagers to people in their 20's, in a college setting

Recs Wanted SI reborn into a fanon world.

• Upvotes

Basically, SI is reborn into, lets say Naruto, but instead of canon its fanon, Civilian Council, all those bad 2010's tropes, neglected!naruto and so on.

Or Harry Potter with Evil!weaslies.

I find them so damn fun, especially if they dont take themself siriously.

Any Recs?

Looking for long, super cheesy, fluffy, tooth-rotting romantic fics! 🥹💕with the first time trope, especially with shy/inexperienced characters and lots of tenderness. Preferably MM, but any fandom is welcome! smut is nice as long as there's plenty of romance. Please feed my hopeless romantic heart! 😭🫶🏻

Venting My most popular fiction is also the one I want to update the least

• Upvotes

I have this story (60k long, which I didn't even remember I had written so much of it) that I have last updated in 2021 and it's my most popular story by a lot (more than 5k kudos and counting). I have pretty much no intention of ever continuing it, not because I don't know how to continue it or because I lost motivation, or even simply because I don't like the ship anymore (because I do, even if less than before) but because I ended up hating the fandom for this story. I remember that, every time I would write and post a new chapter, the comment section would turn into a battlefield. It became stressing and stopped being fun. So I just stopped writing in this fandom altogether.

The problem is that people keep finding it to this day, they keep leaving kudos and sometimes comments. Because it turns out that the more popular a story is, and the more attention it keeps getting and the more popular it becomes.

It's very rare that, when I receive the You have Kudos email, I don't see this specific story there. And every time I do, I get stressed all over again, because I almost feel guilty that people keep reading this, knowing that I will most likely never continue it, to the point that I want to hide it altogether into one of those undisclosed collections so it's not available anymore. But then I think about the fact that it wouldn't be fair to these people whose only 'crime' is liking my story. Because I myself hate when a story I love just disappears without warning.

Other times I think that maybe I should just force myself to continue it, but given that I reached what was pretty much the halfway point, that would mean writing another 60k words which...I don't really want to do, especially since I'm already writing another long fiction and this one I truly enjoy writing even if it's not nearly as popular.

So, yeah, I don't really know what to do.

Is that something that ever happened to you? And if yes, what did you do?

Venting Experienced my first fandom death. I am not okay 😭

I was part of a fandom that peaked around 2020-2022, and I wrote a few chapters of a fic in that fandom before taking a long hiatus. Recently, I picked it up again and started updating it but it doesn’t get nearly as much interaction as it used to.
To compare, I got around 8+ comments per chapter but now I get just a few hits.
It’s hitting me hard realizing that the fandom is dead now. The series holds a huge place in my heart as it got me through 2020, and I really really love the fic I was writing for it. It makes me wonder if I should give up writing the fic, which honestly feels just as bad as continuing it. It feels like I’m throwing my words into the void atp.
How does one cope with this 😔

Writing Questions Help needed writing rehearsals!!

(If the wording seems a bit wierd, that's because this post has been originally written in spanish, then later translated with google translate. I kinda know my way around english, but I've had problems in the past with my less-than-graceful grammar.)

I’ve been thinking lately about writing a fanfic where the main plot centers on a group of teenagers forming bonds while trying to put on a production of the musical "Heathers" on a limited budget.

I’m not entirely sure how to write the scenes where the characters rehearse musical numbers since i want to evoke certain emotions or trigger specific events during those sequences. Blantly writting the singing as dialogue??? I feel like it would throw off many people while reading.

If anyone has any ideas or, BETTER YET, knows of any literary works available online that I could look at to understand how to approach this format, that would be a huge help.

P.S. I’m a beginner when it comes to writing fanfiction. Alongside posting this, I’m loong into writing tips and trying to read as much as I can. Anything helps, really.

Writing Questions How do I write things that makes more sense with a visual?

I'm writing a fic for a cartoon I really love, right? But when I finished the outline and actually went to go write it, I realized I don't know how to write a lot of the things that I have down.

For instance, I have scenes where bees "talk" to each other, but none of the other characters can understand them because they're, well, bees. The way I imagined these scenes in my head was the viewer could understand them through a caption at the bottom of the screen, like how some shows and movies do with characters that don't speak English. But I obviously can't do that in a typical fanfiction format.

Montages are another thing. Montages make sense in a show, movie, or comic, but not so much when they're just words. The only way I can think to write a montage is by saying "They went to a convenience store to get milk and goofed around in the aisles. Then they went to a clothing store and tried on every outfit. Then they went to Best Buy and accidentally set a smart fridge on fire." Which is repetitive and boring. (This isn't what would would actually happen in the fic, just an example)

Is there a way to write these things, or should I rewrite/get rid of them entirely because they don't transfer well to the format?

Discussion Do people hate OCs a lot???

EDIT: Okay you guys are FAST at replying. I really appreciate your insights. I am definitely enjoying every minute of writing the fic, but just a little nervous about reactions when I post it (11 years, y’all, 11 years). So I will definitely tag it correctly when I do post it in a few months. Thank you guys! <3

This is a genuine question. I’m 25 and it’s been about 11 years since I’ve written a fanfiction. I established an entire character for Project Hail Mary who actually plays a huge role instead of just Ryland Grace’s love interest. Long story short, they work on a Hail Mary replica before launch and do a ton of experiments and tests. There’s a lot of science (I did a ton of research for it), it’s a slow burn, and I SWEAR there’s an actual plot. But lately on TikTok I’ve heard that people absolutely despise x OCs 😭 ya girl is already like 80 pages into this so now I’m wondering if I wasted my time writing it? Or am I overthinking it because I’m writing fanfic at my grown age?

Recs Wanted Any good fics where the protagonist tries to get back to Earth after being isekaid?

As above. So far the only one I’ve seen was I’m Where Now?, where the protagonist got sent to Elder Scrolls and after finishing the plot gets help to jet himself back home, misses, and so on.

I’d prefer ones where the protagonist is trying to go home under their own means, rather than some ROB saying “defeat the enemy, go home with powers” or such.

Lost Fic [Uncharted] Looking for PolarGrizz47's deleted Nate & Sam one-shots — especially "Failed Escape" (AO3 #9319496)

Hoping someone saved these. PolarGrizz47 deleted a batch of her Uncharted prompt fills from AO3 sometime around 2017. None of them were ever captured by the Wayback Machine or archive.today, FicHub has no cached copies, and they were never cross-posted to FFN or her Tumblr. I had one of them downloaded myself and lost it when I switched phones, so I know copies existed.

THE ONE I WANT MOST — "Failed Escape"

- AO3 work ID 9319496 (archiveofourown.org/works/9319496, now a 404)

- Posted 14 Jan 2017, 1,576 words, one chapter, Mature, Major Character Death

- Part 37 of her "Uncharted Prompts" series

- Written for the prompt: "No. Oh, no. No no no. This can't happen. No. You can't die."

- Tagged Nathan Drake, Samuel Drake, Rafe Adler, Major Character Injury

- Tagged Nate/Sam, but only as "implied" — from what I remember it reads as platonic brothers, and that's what I'm after. I'm not looking for incest fic specifically; the fic just happened to carry that tag and got caught in the author's purge of everything tagged that way.

- Premise: canon divergence of the Panama prison break where Nate gets shot instead of Sam. Sam gets him to the boat and keeps him talking to keep him awake, and at one point asks Nate his favorite animal — Nate says lemurs. That's the line I remember best.

Related: "Bad Partnership" (ID 9169162, 2 Jan 2017, 1,099 words, Mature) was written for the prompt "Where did they shoot you!? Where did they sh-- Oh... Oh, god... Oh please no." It's possible the boat scene is actually in this one, so I'd love either.

THE REST OF HER DELETED UNCHARTED WORKS (these were all tagged Nate/Sam — I'm listing them for completeness in case someone saved the whole batch; all from the Uncharted Prompts series unless noted):

- 30 Day OTP Winter Challenge (Drake Edition) — ID 7948417, started 18 Sep 2016, ~4,000 words, 4 of 30 chapters posted. Drabble collection, not part of the series.

- Sleepy — ID 8523190, 10 Nov 2016, 296 words. Prompt: falling asleep in front of the TV.

- Teaching — ID 9162043, 2 Jan 2017, 236 words. Prompt: slow dancing.

- Bonus Points — ID 9168298, 2 Jan 2017, 250 words. Prompt: "You still get points for doing good."

- Too Keep Warm — ID 9169243, 2 Jan 2017, 475 words. Prompt: finding the other wearing their clothes.

- A Breather — ID 9169462, 2 Jan 2017, 280 words. Prompt: resting foreheads together.

- Moments — ID 9169516, 2 Jan 2017, 518 words. "Written for a variety of prompts!"

If you downloaded any of these back in 2016–2017 (AO3 EPUB/PDF, a reader app, an email-to-Kindle, an old phone backup), please DM me. The author took these down on purpose, so I'm not asking for a public repost — just a copy for my own reading. Thank you!

Discussion Have you ever read a fanfic that is a literal book for itself? An actual piece of for itself and not anything lower than an original book in terms of artistic value?

I'm new to fanfiction and haven't read many but I was thinking about the concept of fanfic writing as a whole. I personally think fanfics are an actual form of literature. Of course the quality of their writing varies depending on their author and their goal for writing fanfics, and you should always appreciate the original creators work because if it wasn't for them that world and its lovely characters wouldn't exist, but I really don't think in terms of artistic value fanfiction is something less. I would say it's a different form of writing but not something less. What do you think? If you were original authors how would you feel if someone writes a fic of your story with amazing writing?

edit: some other questions I want to add: do get curious of the fanfic authors original works if their fanfiction are well written? I mean do you like their writing or you just like the world they wrote fanfiction for? if you were both an original author and fanfic writer would you be ok for people to knew your fanfictions as well?

I'm really curious to know how much of the authors actual skills shine in fanfiction through people's opinion.

Lost Fic Looking for old Yelena Belova x Kate Bishop fanfic [MCU/Marvel Cinematic Universe]

A vague memory of reading this fic around the end of 2021 to the start of 2022 just recently came to mind, and I'm interested in checking it out again except I can barely remember a few details about it. Here's all I can recall:

The story included a scene of Yelena and Kate being undercover spies at a party or some other big rich person event, ultimately ending with one of them being severely injured afterwards.

The story included some sex scenes, I remember it specifically including Yelena being uncomfortable with her own body, and her and Kate working through that.

I also recall a scene of the pair enjoying funnelcake together, likely near the end of the story as a happy ending sort of scene.

If anyone happens to be able to identify the fic based on these vaguely recalled memories, I'd be grateful for the help. No worries if not :)

Subreddit Meta Beta Bartering [Find or Offer Fic Betaing] - October 15

Welcome to the Beta Bartering thread! Here you can look for a Beta, a Co-writer, or a Writing Buddy for your fic or offer your Beta services to fic authors.

Please note that you can request a beta reader even if you can’t offer anything in exchange, however it will increase your chances of finding a willing beta if you offer something in return.

The rules are straightforward.

  • Make a comment below with the following information.
  • Reply to people that you want to trade with. There is no one making matches for you, reach out to likely people in the thread.

If you're looking for a Beta, a Co-writer, or a Writing Buddy:

  • Name and Link to your fic (if it's not published, link something else as an example of your writing).
  • Tell us what fandom you're writing for.
  • Can someone who isn't in your fandom make sense of your story?
  • The genre of your fic - romance/smut/gen/mystery/horror/etc.
  • What you're looking for from a Beta or a Co-writer - Grammar/Structure/Plot/Planning/Idea soundboard/etc.
  • What your projected word count is.
  • How frequently you update.
  • What fandoms you are able/willing to beta for or what you can offer in exchange*.

Proposed options for no exchange wording:

  • If you do not want to offer something in exchange, please leave a brief note that you are unable to offer anything at this time.
  • Note: If you are unable to offer something in exchange at this time, please leave a brief note explaining.

If you're willing to Beta for someone:

  • What fandoms you're well versed in or if you're willing to take on anything.
  • Preferred genre/types of fics.
  • Any subjects you're not willing to tackle.
  • Types of Betaing you're good at or willing to try - Grammar/Structure/Plot/Planning/Idea soundboard/etc.
  • Minimum or maximum word count.
  • One-off (single session) or ongoing Betaing.
  • Time constraints. Do you have a fast turn-around time? Is it going to be more than a week for you to get back to an author with notes?
  • What you'd like in exchange * for your services.

* Bartering Ideas!

Since some people want Betas but are too busy to reciprocate or aren't confident in their writing skills and some Betas don't write fics themselves, you can offer other things in exchange. Please do not offer monetary exchanges.

If you aren't sure what to offer, you can also open this up to the Beta to suggest a barter in exchange.

Here are a few ideas for bartering:

  • Reciprocal Betaing (of course that's welcome!)
  • Reading and commenting on their fics.
  • Write a fic for a fandom/subject/pairing/brotp of their choice.
  • Make fanart for them.
  • Name an OC after them.
  • Edit/give assistance with a non-fic project.
  • Research help for this/future fics.

Feel free to get creative, people have many specialties they can draw on!

Here's a link to the previous ones just in case there's someone in there that catches your interest.

Celebrate Just posted my first fanfic after 4 years...

...and I can not tell if I've become a better or worse writer, but at least I posted! 4 years may not seem like a lot (and it isn't really) but it still did take a lot to FINALLY finish a fic even if it was just a one shot. I'm in the middle of several 10k+ word fics but none are anywhere close to being completed lol.

It's hard to compare my writing from before because I used to just write humor for the most part, and now I think everything I write is a lot more serious (or straight up depressing). But making sure a fic is written is appropriately emotional is very different than creating fun situations, so I have no way of evaluating my own work.

But either way, I'm happy that I have finally posted again! I've been thinking about it for so long but kept putting it off, so as soon as I finished writing I did the most minor of edits and posted just so that it was finally done. I know that stats may get to me later but for now I'm just happy to make this step :)
