Produce Plus: Free Produce

Hello,

I've been attending the Produce Plus events for a couple months now. Was unemployed up until about a month ago. I've found that friends of mine that have been receiving SNAP benefits for years did not know about Produce Plus. As someone who has medically necessary dietary restrictions, I'm forever grateful to the DHS worker who did my SNAP application and told me about this.

This is a free program put on by Food For Lane County that anyone can participate in. You do not need to be receiving or qualify for SNAP benefits to attend and take what you need. Anyone can show up. The only information they ask for is for you to scribble a 'signature' on a sign in sheet and to know how many people you're feeding with the food.

You can check the FFLC website, at the bottom of the list of food pantries, and it will show you all of the Produce Plus dates/times/locations. You basically just walk thru and take the produce that you want. Sometimes they will limit quantity on high demand items like watermelons or avocados depending on how many they have. Most of the produce is organic if that's your thing too.

There are 3 every week in my calendar:

Tuesday's at 3pm

At Kokwel Wellness Center (in the parking lot near Burger King and in front of Albertsons on River road).

Wednesday's at 10am

At the red barn behind Kalapuya and Prairie Mountain, on Patriot Way.

Thursday's at 1pm

At the ODHS Family Wellness Center on W11th.

I recommend arriving early to wait in line if you're able to, or at the very least no later than 15-30 minutes after the start time, as things can go quickly.

The one on Tuesdays is my favorite. Huge variety of produce. I cannot have gluten but they always have infinite loaves of bread and sometimes baked goods (an occasional loaf of gluten free bread for me).

The one on Wednesdays typically will have 1-2 dairy products. Smaller variety of produce but different stuff than what's typically at the one on Tue. Have not been able to make it to the one on Thur. at a reasonable time.

Things are tough for a lot of people right now and there are so many people unemployed and struggling. Produce Plus is the only reason I've eaten some weeks/months.

Stay safe and please share this info with those in your life that could use it!

Who is hiring? (Monthly jobs thread)

Welcome to the monthly jobs thread! If you're aware of any job openings, please share them here for eager job-seekers in the Eugene/Springfield area!

And if you're an employer looking to hire, feel free to share any openings you have.

The rules

  • All top-level comments MUST be a link or a description of a job opening or openings in the Eugene/Springfield area
  • Optionally, start your comment with a tag to indicate what type of offering it is. For example:"[Restaurant] Looking for a new cook!""[Tech] Now hiring new technical support reps!""[Manufacturing] Need production line workers!"

Good luck!

Fosters needing forever homes

These sweeties need their new families! My husband and I have fostered them for months and they’re ready to start their next chapters. I’ll list their short blurbs but I’m happy to send tons of photos and all of their info. We’ve had them for months, we know them very well. We’ll be particular about where they go to assure the right fit and not have them bounce around! Thank you for taking the time to look. Please reach out if you’re interested and help spread the word!

They get long great but I am not expecting them to go to a new home together, that would be incredible but not necessary for their happiness. They would do great in a home with another dog to play with and or someone who has experience with the breed!

Montgomery (Monty)-brindle neutered, UTD on shots, turned 1 in August, sweet cuddle bug boy, loves to play fetch, loves water, gentle with cats, great with other dogs, totally up for a hard hike and then lazy laid back nap for the rest of the day! 56-60 pounds

Spicy (Spicy Chicken) -black and white spots with brindle booty, UTD on shots, born on Christmas Eve, very snuggly Velcro girl, loves to sunbathe outside and always finds the sunspot in the house, loves water, loves to play fetch, has loved every dog she’s met, gentle with cats but curious, great recall, like to nap under the covers! 45 pounds

Something to do See Bat Boy the Musical this Halloween!

Hey Eugenians! If you like weird musicals, campy horror, or live theatre you should check out our production of Bat Boy: the Musical.

It’s playing at the Opal Center in beautiful downtown Cottage Grove. Shows are Thursday through Saturday of Halloween weekend (Oct 29-31) and the following weekend (Nov 5-7).

Just a 25-30 min commute from town, and well worth it to see this piece of theatre that is not staged as often as I think it should be! Our cast features talented local performers in an intimate black-box venue.

Bat Boy is based on the ridiculous tabloid stories printed in the Weekly World News in the 90s! It explores what the Bat Boy’s life would be like if a regular family took him in and taught him how to be a man. The story is hilarious, heartfelt, and tragic.
It is NOT family friendly and we are recommending it for at least ages 14 and up.

More info and tickets here.

This is my inflatable brain character that we set up for the Eugene Bright Parade a few weeks ago. What an amazing event that was. Had so much fun seeing all the incredible installations and performances. What a beautiful city. It was my first time visiting but I hope it’s not my last.

Had to slam on my brakes because this guy pulled out in front of me. Why try to go when you can’t see if anyone is coming? So dangerous.

KEZI, are you kidding me?

• Upvotes

School shooting in Bend and we have to go to weather as the first story at 4pm and 4:30pm? What is with the unhealthy fascination with weather in this town? We literally could have the deadly Cascadia Earthquake hit and KEZI would start off the newscast with the weather report.

I've got 3 bags of nothing-special sewing stuff. I'd take it to MECCA, but I'd rather give it directly to someone.

Pickup only.

Downtown Eugene.

Social security scam alert.

Several calls this morning from random different numbers claiming to be social security. I answered the last one. This individual claimed we had an appointment and missed it. Told me the numbers come up differently because sometimes they are routed from New York or Chicago. Uh huh. Sure. Told me we should have got a letter in the mail. Really. Hmmm. I asked which address. Because we moved a year ago and promptly updated that info at S.S office. He couldn’t tell me the old address. Said I needed to update at office. Or he could do it for me. Sure. I reported the scam to police and social security. He was convincing. I can see how a elderly person could fall for it.

Measure 20-388 would charge large retailers a 2% fee on gross profits from Eugene sales to fund clean energy programs. Lookout Eugene-Springfield checked key claims from both campaigns, including whether the fee would raise prices and how retail plays into the city's climate pollution issues.

Looking for a specific kind of pizza. Please help.

I've had ok pizza in Eugene, but I'm looking for old school crispy pizza. The kind that is flat, and sometimes has cornmeal on the bottom.

It's old school Pietro's style. Ciddicci's in Albany used to be great. Then it was not. Paddington's in Salem style. Wallery's in South Salem was so good, then they weren't. Shakey's, but they closed.

Abby's tried, but failed and costs nearly 50 bucks for a pie.

Do you have any recommendations?

I might just drive to Cottage Grove and order Pinocchio's, because it's really good and exactly what I like. I WAS JUST HOPING TO FIND THAT PIZZA HERE IN EUGENE.

Homelessness Disabled- Housing/Navigation help?

• Upvotes

I am severely disabled & unable to work- without ending up in the ER. Many stacked conditions so it doesn't take much usage of energy/stress before my body malfunctions.

I've been staying with my bestfriend unofficially(not on lease) but I have to find a new place to live. I only get $994 SSI income.

I was wondering what disability resources have been proven to help in navigating housing & acquiring it? I don't to waste time & energy just to realize an organization can't help.

jiggly Cyclists, what does your cycling attire look like in the colder months?

I haven't been a regular cyclist in a long time though I used to be, but I didn't really care about getting cold and soggy buuut now I do. What do you wear that's water resistant and BREATHABLE? I wanna work commute and go on fun long rides, if that makes a difference in answers. Also bonus points for tips on riding in the rain as a glasses wearer! TIA!

Oakway Center Mall slowdown last night?

• Upvotes

Does anyone know what was going on at Oakway last night? I was headed to the movie theater around 7, and there were people stopping everyone as the drive through an intersection; they wanted to know where we were headed, and wanted to chat about nothing in particular before letting us go. I was in a rush otherwise I'd have asked them what was up. Any ideas?

Lost & Found Lost Bag on EMX

Shot in the dark, but if anybody that was on the 9pm EMX from Eugene station tonight (Oct 14th) that got off after Q street station would let me know something. If you saw anybody take a black Adidas drawstring bag off the front of the bus on the higher seats would you send me a DM? Ive already sent a lost and found request to LTD as well as reported my cards stolen so no fear of the person running them. Sadly the most they will get is free rides through next month unless said bag is recovered. I was so stupid and I NEVER leave without it.

Thank you advance my fellow Eugenians.

Something to do Calling All Skaters

Is there anyone in town who can successfully grind this rail at the top, kickflip the gap, and continue the grind down the second section?

There's a substantial hill/runway at the top for building speed, I think it might even be possible with the right set of roller blades....

Southern Oregon Driving Education - Driving Test.

Hi Everyone ! I have my driving test coming up soon at Southern Oregon Driving Education, and I was wondering if anyone here has taken their test there before.

How was your overall experience? Was the examiner friendly or strict? What did the test involve, and were there any tricky parts I should prepare for?

I'd really appreciate any tips or advice from people who have taken their driving test there.

ACTUALLY Hiring ?? (preferably restaurants)

This probably gets posted all the time but I’m a college student (21) and I’m looking for a job. I’ve applied to so many places online that say they’re hiring but never get anything back (not even a no ??) and i’m going insane, does anyone know of anywhere that’s ACTUALLY hiring? 😭
