Announcement EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: Negative comments criticizing a creator's use of AI assistance in their project will be removed

Recently, r/DragonQuest has seen a huge uptick in negative comments, such as calling projects "AI slop" whenever the creator mentions that AI assistance was used in some way. Going forward, negative comments that do nothing but attempt to derail project posts over their use of AI assistance will be removed for trolling (Rule 1). Repetitive abuse or mockery of this decision may result in a temporary ban.

While community feedback is vital, users should focus on constructive criticism of the quality and substance of the work rather than blind hostility and toxicity toward the creator. Many creators leverage AI to handle repetitive bottlenecks, allowing them to achieve milestones that would otherwise take years or be impossible. A prime example of beneficial AI assistance is the decompilation of games back into human-readable source code which can then be modified and natively ported to other platforms. It can also speed up translation projects that might otherwise never be completed.

We will be monitoring this situation closely as we move ahead and we will determine if a minimum level of quality will become necessary so that we're not overwhelmed with low quality projects. At this point, we're not there yet but there is definitely an uptick in releases.

To be absolutely clear: AI-generated artwork is still not allowed. Because AI artwork requires zero manual effort to generate in mere seconds, it can easily overwhelm a subreddit, drowning out genuine community created art.

Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !

Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!

We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index

Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"

So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)

This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.

Thank you and have fun questing!

General I finally finished every mainline DQ game

Took me a couple years but I beat them all except 10 for localization reasons. I played the newest version of each game except 1 & 2 (iOS), 7 (3DS) and 8 (PS2). This was cause the newest version wasn’t out when I started except 8, but my coworker gave me his old PS2 for free so I figured I’d put it to use. For 1-6 I used a non spoiler guide, say what you want but I have a limited amount of time and a backlog too big for the time I don’t have. I still explored and got got lost but when I was ready to move on I referred to the guide if I needed it.

But anyways, as a newer fan who just finished all the games, here’s a little bit about my experience:

DQ1
Not good enough to make me fall in love but good enough to keep me playing

DQ2
I really liked the party members and it got me excited for future games

DQ3
I skipped this one initially because they announced the 2DHD and I wanted to play that. Wish they announced 1&2 and the same time cause I would’ve don’t the same for them as well. But this games story was straight forward but charming, and the new art style did wonders for the visuals

DQ4
This is where I fell in love with the series. The chapters and characters were so creative and I had never played a game like this up until this point. Psaro is an amazing villain and for sure the best villain in dragon quest.

DQ5
The best story in any dragon quest game. This game is heavily about family but the part that stood out to me was Hero and Bianca’s love story throughout their lives. It’s the first game I ever played where you pick a wife and it actually affects who your kids are. This game is peak.

DQ6
I really found this game to be charming. A lot of people online really do not like this game, and I admit the dungeons and level spikes are less than desired. But the characters and story really did something for me. Journey of self discovery with no main bad guy till later on kinda felt reminiscent of real life. I realize that having a spoiler free guide meant I was never truly lost, so that could be a reason why I like it more than most. Also the Hero design in this game is a top 3 design for me, along with a lot of the character design in this game.

DQ7
This game started out really slow for me but once I got to the job classes it really took off. It was the first game I really put a lot into the job classes and the story does time travel pretty nicely in my opinion. I didn’t hate Maribel as much as I’ve seen others.

DQ8
This game is peak. Easily in my top 5 games of all time. The localized voice acting did so much for this game. The party is small but they make up for it by being some of the best characters in the franchise. The story is really good but nothing too crazy but again, the characters just breathe so much life into the story anything that’s happening that involves them is engaging. I wanna play the 3DS version and from what I hear they fix any issues I had with the game.

DQ9
The first game I could match the Hero’s skin tone to my own. This game had a similar feeling that 7 gave me, slow start but hits its groove once I got to the job classes. I wish I played this game when it came out with friends.

DQ11
This game has 10/10 gameplay. Might the most fun I’ve had playing any game ever. It would be my favorite game of all time if it wasn’t for one thing. The ending of act 2 was, in my opinion, perfect. And act 3 getting rid of all that character development for less fleshed out versions of a similar outcome just didn’t sit right with me. The end of act 2 felt like a story of grief and perseverance which kinda felt undermined when the hero just goes back in time so no one has to deal with those emotions anymore, which just isn’t as good a story to me. I understand he’s saving a lot of people by doing it and that is the right thing to do, but it makes it less interesting and applicable to real life. Also the sexualization of jade felt super forced. They tried to make her Jessica from 8 without understanding why those tropes work for her character. But over all this game is a 9/10. I absolutely love this game.

My top 3 is 8, 5, & 11

General Just now use auto battle tactics and wow you guys

In this order I have beaten XI, IV, and V. I’m working on III 2D-HD atm and just tried using auto battling for the first time and omg I have been missing out.

I’ve probably put 170 hours in DQ gameplay over the games and I didn’t realize how much auto battling streamlines the experience. It’s way more efficient! Sure sometimes my hero just spams Kazap (DQIII) but once I got a couple Goddess rings (recover mana by walking) the encounters are so chill.

I favored mana conservation but now I am finding (that at least in III) that because of Goddess rings, prayer rings (III gives you so many like Jesus Christ), and quick access to using inns (depending on if need in a dungeon), the time spent articulating clean and quick encounters doesn’t outmatch auto battling. However every boss fight is more fun maximizing manual strategy.

If you find dopamine out of efficiency I recommend giving it a try!

I’ve been looking, but I can’t seem to find any kind of necklace or pendant featuring the trident symbol from the church in the game.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find one?

Dragon Quest VII Please help I’m really stuck

• Upvotes

I’m stuck in VII Reimagined. I can’t figure it out what to do next. I’ve beat Ballymolloy, Emberdale, L’Arca, Frobisher, and now Regenstein just a few minutes ago. I didn’t receive or get any fragments in Regenstein. I know usually once you finish an island in the past a new one pops up in the present but i can’t find anything with an exclamation mark. The little guy in the shrine of mysteries says he doesn’t sense any fragments in the whole world, but my current objective when I bring up the map says “Search for the stone tablet fragments you need to continue with your adventure.” They’re contradicting each other so I’m really confused. I’m truly at a loss.

Video I made a real NES RPG inspired by Dragon Warrior I-IV!

Hello r/dragonquest! I have been wanting to share this with you guys and holding off for SO long but I think the time has come.

This is not about an official Dragon Quest game, but rather something I've been working on that I think might appeal to fellow DQ fans!

I am an older gamer, grew up playing Dragon Warrior I to IV and, to this day, they remain my all-time favorite games. Though I still love them, I couldn't *quite* get as much into later Dragon Quest games and have spent my entire adult life wishing we could've had more 8-bit DW games. Then, one day, I just decided to do it myself and I have been working on it for almost 2 years now.

My game is called The Book of Rynn. It is a game made from scratch for the actual NES console, *not* a romhack, and all assets have been handmade by me, a professional pixel artist and a professional music composer. Not a single asset has been lifted from anywhere. I started off wanting to essentially cosplay creating a Dragon Warrior game but over time Rynn formed its own lore, its own characters and locations, its own mechanics and vibes as well.

I had many stories to tell, so I opted for a "short stories" format rather than one long epic adventure, so I chose to break this down into 4 standalone stories. The first story, called The Royal Seal, is now out and playable as a free demo. Expect about 8 to 10 hours of gameplay.

The game is mechanically complete, and I am preparing to launch a Kickstarter campaign in January 2027 to finance the production of the next 3 stories as well as making physical copies of the game on a real NES cart, with box, manual and foldable map, just like in the old days!

I will leave you with the good stuff:

Free demo: https://sebotron.itch.io/the-book-of-rynn (you'll need an NES emulator or a flash cart to play on an actual NES)

Kickstarter campaign: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sebotron/the-book-of-rynn-a-new-homebrew-nes-jrpg

I would absolutely *love* for fellow fans of older Dragon Warrior games, the ones that remember the long grind fondly, the quirky NPCs, the catchy music tracks and all the evil demon wizards we sent back from whence they came, to give it a try. The final game is still in development and nothing is set in stone so feedback is more than welcome!

Thank you so, so, so much for reading and checking it out and I hope you all have an excellent day!

Sebotron

EDIT: I have to leave for a few hours, I will absolutely be back later and reply to more comments! Thank you all! I'm back!

Anime Advice please! I am wanting to purchase the physical discs, and I found a complete set listed on Ebay for $44. However, I am worried it might not be legit since the synopsis on the back is for a different anime. Should I get it?

Dragon Quest Monsters 2 Question about Monster Count

Playing DWM2 Cobi for the first time in a long time. Turns out the guide, which I’ve never used in the past, says there’s some cool post game stuff I want to work towards. Problem is, you need to befriend a LOT of monsters to get there. I see that your dad tells you how many species you’ve made friends with and the library tells you all monsters caught. My questions are this. Is there a way to see how many Monsters I’ve become friends with total? Do duplicate monsters count towards my total to unlock postgame keys? I’ve wandered the island and internet to my best trying to find this info. Thanks in advance :*

Dragon Quest XI Need help grinding in dq 11

Hello all. This is my first dragonquest game and I've I've been really loving it but I've ran into an issue that's been hurting my enjoyment of the game.

I was trying to do the hallelujah + electro light combo + sleeping them with Rabs pep power at manglegrove way station but everytime I've attempted it the metal slimes run away before Rab gets a chance to sleep them, or even before I have a chance to swap in Erik and attack them with Erik or even Jade after.

Is there another way to grind decently that's not so frustrating or rng reliant? It takes way too long to pep jade up again to cast electro light even with save scumming just for the slimes to run before I get a useful turn. I don't want to burn out right here at the end because until this grinding thing I was having fun. I'm playing on harder monsters as well. Thanks for the help

Dragon Quest IX Garth Goyle defeated solo

Post image
147 Upvotes

After this, I’m swapping to Priest.

This boss ended up being a lot easier than it definitely should have been, and I’m going to get into exactly why in this description.

First things first, you probably noticed my Maximum HP is a lot higher (and my Maximum MP is higher by 10) compared to when I fought the Leviathan, even though my level is the exact same. That is because I finally took the time to grind levels in every other class (except Priest) for permanent stat boosts.

The way this happens is, as seen at the end when I leveled up from this boss, skill points can be used to grant pretty decent bonuses depending on where they’re applied. Up until this point, I only had ever played the Minstrel class, so the skill points I had earned are all the ones you see at the end of this video, mainly put into buffing my Shield skill so that I could protect myself more easily with a minor amount put into Swords to make grinding faster (and so I could unlock the Gladiator class) and a small amount into Litheness for a bit more protection (increase dodge rate at red hp). Now, though, I have gone through almost every other class, pretty much exclusively putting points into their special skills which grant those general permanent stats such as Max HP and MP. Other massively increased stats are my Strength and Resilience (Resilience is the base for your Defense stat).

To describe some of my actions for this boss fight, I looked up what Garth Goyle is weak to, and it showed that it takes 125% damage from Wind based attacks, so by using Gale Fource from the Armamentalist class in tandem from Double Up from the Gladiator class, I managed to absolutely shred this boss. And this will be the case for all future bosses that have elemental weaknesses as well. And after seeing that I was barely taking any damage before using Double Up, I was confident that I didn’t need to use Immense Defence for the protection.

Up next is The Tyrantula.

Dragon Quest VII DQVIIR: Balance feels off?

I’ve seen countless posts on how easy this game is supposed to be but i feel that doesn’t tell the whole story.

I’ve just reached the Beacon and the game feels stupidly hard all of a sudden? Harmours one-shot me fairly consistently and most battles get out of control real fast. But i can’t seem to find any mention online of this part of the game being particularly difficult?…

And overall the balance feels off. The game starts out really easy, so i put Strong Monsters on, and Damage Dealt less but then battles drag on for way too long, so i turn Damage up again and now this.

Do difficulty sliders overcorrect this much or is this part of the game legit hard?
