Question Anyone used these in their dice?

Looking for new things to try, anyone put these filler things in their dice? Thinking they might make an interesting texture as well as some iridescence

Liquid cores.. in winter?

Hi, the winter is coming (pun intended), and I'm here overthinking the physics of liquid cores, water expanding, and dice exploding.

Sooo, have you had any issues with liquid core dice cracking due to cold?

I wonder what kind of liquids you use (and in what proportions) to make sure the dice travel safely through international post in winter?

At first, I was making the classic mixture of water (50%), glycerin (50%), and alcohol (a few drops). Not sure how well that holds up. Probably need to throw it in a freezer to see.

But then I thought mica powder just takes too long to settle, and it's very hard to mix it up at first when rolling. (I'd like that quick rise, quick fall kind of action.)

So I tried 100% water plus a few drops of alcohol. The swirly action was much better... but that will definitely freeze and crack.

Then I tried 50% water, 50% alcohol. But UV resin doesn't stay on the cap hole and sinks, creating threads while I try to cure it.

THEN I tried mineral oil, but for some reason, it's EXTREMELY hard to seal with UV resin as well.

Kinda lost here..

P. S. Yes, I probably need to use glitter instead of mica powder if I want that quick rise, quick fall action, but the question about not freezing still stands.

3d printing Calling all Master Makers, this is not a drill!

Hey folks,

Formlabs just dropped a 699$ printer. I have one on pre-order as well as 3 of the “alpha” resins. I will do an in depth comparison with the Form4 and Form3 in regard to master making.

This might be HUGE or it just might be a better consumer option atleast.

Curse of Strahd dice for a friend

One of my friends is going to DM a Strahd campaign for us so I made her this set and box using the red and purple theme with gold lettering. Using the beautiful SpaceBarShop mold results in crisp numbers and very little flashing. I also made a quick resin potion bottle for an added touch 😁

At this point, I'm about 20-ish sets of dice poured and loving every minute spent experimenting with resin, inks and molds!

Lighting in my office is crap, so apologies for the iffy images.

so my experimental set in the last image has a regular white polymer clay base + several layers of paint. my hands are a bit shaky so it's been hard to paint on something so tiny. it's been a fun and yet time-consuming project, but I think I'd like to try making more painted dice in the future. if you can't tell, they're supposed to be pink leopard print. next time I might try using neon colors though.

Releasing a cast sterling silver D20 from its sand mould. Quite an anxious moment as it's when I find out if the casting was successful, or if I need to start again from scratch. Thanks for watching ☺️

It's almost done!! Just have one more unexpected thing to test, and I'll be sitting to write out all the instructions for this technique! Still trying to keep an eye on how these will last longterm, but even from my first attempt with this method, it's holding up better than I thought. That being said, I noticed some colors behave differently than others, so we'll see.

Hi friends, I made my first dice set with a custom lord-of-the-rings elvish font made just for the dice. Super excited about how the obsidian cut feels and looks. Would love to get some feedback... next step is 3D designing a dice holder. Let me know your thoughts :) Calling it "VaultBorn Dice"

Pressure Pot Questions

Hi! I am trying to make some dice for my D&D campaign, however

1) I have never made dice before

2) I have none of the materials

My biggest hold up is the pressure pot. I don't want to spend a bunch of money for a pot, and I don't have a lot of space for it. Does anyone have ideas or suggestions on where I could rent one or find affordable options? Or techniques that don't require a pressure pot? General advice and suggestions are also welcome! Thanks!

Advice Zona & Nanolab

Post image
9 Upvotes

I have used both Zona and Nanolab in polishing dice. I thought I would share a picture of Nanolab's pink paper after use.

I wouldn't say this was light or heavy use. This is the appearance after moderate use on a pottery wheel. There is no question that Zona lasts longer to me. However, a fresh piece of Nanolab does well, but doesn't last long.

The adhesive back of Nanolab makes it a bit easier to apply and swap, and it will stay as flat as you apply it. Zona, however, can snag if a sharp edge catches the paper. So long as that doesn't happen, Zona will last longer. Sometimes it can be a little difficult to say whether a piece of Zona has worn out, because it doesn't change in appearance much.

I will also add that you can use water with both. Zona edges out Nanolab for one simple reason. Zona lets water soak into it and through it, while Nanolab is a piece of plastic. The color on Nanolab can get into the numbers of your dice if it is wet and gets worn out too much.

I think there is room for both in your polishing materials, but using the right one for the right purpose is important.
