I purchased a project car from someone in Michigan who bought it in Utah. They never transferred the Utah title but filled out the buyer’s portion in their name.
We mistakenly filled out the secondary reassignment portion not knowing it’s reserved for dealerships only. Michigan SOS interpreted this as title jumping which now makes sense.
Michigan SOS recommended I send the title back to the Michigan seller, have him transfer it and then sign the new Michigan title over to me. I did that and the title and bill of sale got lost in the mail.
I was able to actually get in contact with the original Utah owner and he mailed me a duplicate title he signed off on.
My question is- does the person I bought this from in Michigan need to be filled out as the buyer on the Utah title to avoid title jumping? Although I’m in possession of the Utah title that’s signed off, technically I didn’t buy the vehicle from the Utah owner on record currently.
Wanted some input on this situation before I schedule a trip to the SOS office and find out the intermediate buyer needs to title in his name first. It’s a weird situation.
