After finishing Culdcept Begins, I wanted to share a few thoughts and pieces of advice based on my experience with the game.
I’m not exactly new to Culdcept. I’ve played several of the previous games, especially Culdcept Revolt, so I came into Begins already familiar with most of the basic ideas behind deck building, territory management, and combat.
But one thing Culdcept keeps reminding me is that building an advantage and keeping that advantage are two completely different things.
Nothing is truly safe in Culdcept.
Your hand isn’t safe.
Your magic isn’t safe.
And your territories are definitely not safe.
You can spend several laps building what looks like an untouchable position, only to watch the whole thing fall apart because of one spell, one invasion, one bad roll, or another player who happened to bring exactly the card needed to ruin your day.
Learning how to recover from losing something important is just as important as learning how to build it in the first place.
This is probably one of the biggest factor.
Where you place a creature can matter more than what creature you place there.
On many maps, those boring-looking corners, after intersections, and side routes that give other players the option to simply go around your territory can actually be some of the safest places on the board.
A strategically placed mediocre creature can survive for an absurdly long time simply because attacking it isn’t worth the trouble.
Sometimes geography protects your territory better than any defensive item or creature ability ever could.
Being ahead too early isn’t always an advantage.
The player who grows too quickly tends to become the obvious target. Suddenly everyone has a reason to interfere with you, invade your territories, destroy your hand, or otherwise make your life miserable.
And Culdcept’s economy actually makes patient growth surprisingly viable.
By the middle and late game, magic becomes much more plentiful. If you can keep enough territories and make it back to the castle, the lap reward alone can give you enough magic to upgrade several levels at once.
Reaching the target value often isn’t the hardest part.
Keeping what you’ve built long enough to finish is.
So far, the most reliable books I’ve used tend to fall into two extremes.
One approach is maximum offense with minimum economical defense. Build around creatures and cards that let you threaten invasions almost anywhere, while carrying just enough defensive tools to prevent your own important territories from being taken too easily.
The other approach is almost the exact opposite: maximum defense and expansion with minimum necessary offense. Focus on occupying territory, making your important lands extremely difficult to remove, and carry just enough offensive power to forcefully take one critical territory when the situation demands it.
Either way, I don’t think you can completely ignore offense or defense.
And both depend heavily on what your opponents are using. The best defensive card is the one that stops their method of attacking you. The best offensive card is the one that gets around their method of defending.
Culdcept rewards paying attention to the other players’ books instead of simply executing your own plan.
Your book doesn’t need to be filled with powerful creatures.
Cheap and seemingly weak creatures are very nice to have.
They can claim empty land cheaply, satisfy territory requirements, establish chains, act as disposable attackers, force opponents to spend resources, or simply occupy locations that aren’t worth committing an expensive creature to.
And sometimes making your opponent spend a valuable card to remove something you barely cared about is already a win.
That’s one of the things I really like about Culdcept.
One of the easiest mistakes to make is treating every territory as something you need to protect.
You don’t.
Some territories are valuable because of their location, level, element, or importance to your chain. Others are simply there because you needed somewhere to fxck with other players.
If an opponent wants to spend a powerful creature, a valuable item, and a large amount of magic just to take a territory you barely invested in, sometimes the best response is simply to let them pay for it.
The same applies to defensive cards. Just because you can save a creature doesn’t mean you should. Burning an important defensive item to protect a level 1 territory may leave your level 4 or 5 territory vulnerable a few turns later.
Sometimes a territory’s greatest value is forcing your opponent to spend resources taking it.
I’m curious what other experienced players think. What lessons have you learned from playing Begins or the older Culdcept games?

Playing Culcept Begins on switch 1. Some sound disappeared. Things like "Aim for the castle" and other voices in combat. Is this a new update? I had to update something this morning, not sure if it was the Switch or the game.

TLDR: abysmal fps
So I tried downloading the demo on my laptop and I was getting maybe 5fps. I know laptops aren't super powerful, but i have been able to play other games such as Hollow knight and ITGmania on it without issue. It has a weak but dedicated graphics chip and 16gb of ram. I tried lowering setting but it didn't do anything. I also couldn't lower resolution at all. I changed from borderless-full frame to full frame to windowed, but it wouldn't let me lower the resolution. I will try again on my steam deck later but I am just wondering if other people have dealt with this or have solutions. I love this series but having unplayable performance out of the gate did not sell me on this game at all. I want to convince my friends to try this series and I doubt I will have luck unless something is changed.

The AI is the poor fella who abandoned after I took his high level territory right as he was about to cross the castle. His fault really, he swapped the creature standing on that tile with one with quicksand right at the very end

I remember this card back in Revolt. And I don’t remember there is a super effective way to counter it.

I should be receiving my physical copy of the game shortly. Before I decide to keep the game, however, I need to know some things about the multiplayer. I don’t like when I’m here, but everything is so vague.
1) Is there couch multiplayer? I’m hearing no, but I need to verify. This was the number 1 reason why I barely played Revolt. I played the PS2 and 360 games to death, but I never even finished the campaign of Revolt.
2) I might be able to live with that, though, because my household has 2 NSWs and 2 NSW2s. I hear this has gameshare. Gameshare is usually pretty bare bones, though. Can cards and decks be shared? If my family is limited to only using Starter Decks across multiple consoles, I don’t see the point.
Because of my excitement for the upcoming game and reduced my family to the older games. They seem to like it a lot, but if I can’t have a good experience with my family what’s the point?
Thank you

Have almost 4 of every card and still can’t find ONE quicksand! Bad luck? Or is there something I’m missing? Is it a special unlock through an achievement?

I'm so excited to play a new Culdcept game. It's been too long!

Been playing a lot of the ps1 version of culdcept and totally reliving our past. it’s still so much fun.
this folk vs folk battle was a foolish attack by me as i didn’t win nor die and thus did not get the inheritance nor the territory
but was still fun to have the folk battle each other

Topic.
I saw Begins in upcoming physical releases and figured it's a very niche game that looks interesting.
I don't have the attachment a lot of people here probably have.
Is it Monopoly with Dokapon monster battles?

Any issues with the ps5 version to be aware of? Also is the only way to do multi-player with friends doing the gameshare function like they were couch co op? Was a big fan of saga and wanted to see if this was as good.

Anyone playing the Digital or physical on Switch 1? How is it? Good ol' cepter fun? Anything that seems buggy or slow?

I was sad when the physical version got delayed, knowing I had preordered this copy when it was announced. Happy to finally be able to play

Loving Culdcept Begins, but MY GOD! The amount of fort camping rolls the AI hits is absolutely ridiculous. The AI always seems to perform the most soul crushing roll possible. This is almost worst than the AI rolls in Blood Bowl. Anyone else get this too?

I have a switch 1, but can only see news about a physical copy that is switch 2 (switch 1 compatible). I don’t want to pay $75 for it (in Canada), but I want the physical version over the eShop. Does anyone know if a physical switch 1 version is also coming September 17th? Or is it just the switch 2 version that’s backwards compatible?

What are the unlock methods for all the E rank cards in the game?
Onix and Migoal's Blessing are part of the story.
I know someone posted that the Abyssal Monarch required getting 4 of each abyss creature.
The 4 Elemental Blessings require getting all the cards of each element.
There's a Culdra card that I don't know what the unlock method is. I'm assuming it's getting all cards in the packs.
Then there are 2 other E rank cards that I am not sure of.
Is Bundle Gear an actual unlockable card or something that only appears as a fusion during a match?
I don't know how Armageddon unlocks.

To anyone who has played through Culdcept the First. Is it worth playing/getting? I'm waiting for the physical PS5 version but not sure if it's worth picking up

This is one of the titles (achievements) you can get in Culdcept Begins. I’m getting close to having them all, but I’m stumped on this. I feel like I’m ignoring something obvious.
Any ideas?
Edit: It was a pretty simple solution! I had a deck with x4 Mana and x4 Squeeze. I had some zero cost creatures. I played on the Gaidess Tournament level 1, so a 5+ would put me past a fort. Get 100 from a spell, pass a fort, summon a zero cost creature!
Good luck!
