I AM CORNHOLIO!!!

Anyway, about the topic, i only play ironman. I like it, that i have to deal with the consequences of my actions and from events. Even 1% chance of death in an event is something you need to consider, if you can afford it, with the succession when you die etc.

I had the 'white ship' event once, where almost everyone drowned on the way to my coronation. That had some serious consequences for my dynasty.

I still love the icon for that achievement.

201

u/Starfleeter 1d ago

Based on the YouTuber Koifish who is known for his constant Haesteinn shenanigans.

70

u/MikeTheActuary 1d ago

Yep. That's why I love it. :)

I love when Paradox references the community. Like how TommyKay is the one in the “Dam It!” achievement art in HoI4. Though they did him super dirty by giving him a massive bald spot, lol.

u/The_Noremac42 1d ago

I have barely touched China lol

71

u/NatAttack50932 1d ago

I really enjoy playing in Korea and China. I haven't touched the Japanese government types yet, but I did a Korean noble into Son of Heaven run a while ago

47

u/Battleaxebro 1d ago

I tried Japan it’s super boring and slow. You can’t own more than one region and are poor so you spend most of the time sitting there or trying to boost relations with other lords.

30

u/BBQ_HaX0r Roman Empire 1d ago

Lore accurate. There's a reason no one colonized them or tried to conquer them until the mid 1800s.

13

u/Icy-Inspection6428 Roman Empire 1d ago

4

u/The_Yukki 23h ago

You'd expect a men whose full title was essentially "man meant to deal with barbarians" (since that's what Shogun was, or rather shogun was the shortened version of Sei-I-Taishogun) would deal with the "barbarians"

8

u/LiliumAstrale 1d ago

I cheated by taking an adventurer to Japan, conquering Okinawa and vassalizing myself. As a tribal vassal you don't have the normal restrictions so I could expand pretty easily as long as I had high enough opinion with the Kampaku to get pardoned for going to war.

I wanted to do it the normal way but currently, becoming an administrative noble house as an adventurer is an auto-game over, and then I just couldn't resist expanding and forming a kingdom title before switching to administrative and immediately becoming Soryo 😂

3

u/Sovos 1d ago edited 22h ago

becoming an administrative noble house as an adventurer is an auto-game over

Funny you mention that - this annoyed me so much I made a mod to fix it until Paradox get their shit together and patch the bug.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3818185139

Edit: looks like they actually fixed this in 1.20.1

Fixed a Game Over that could occur after procuring an estate.

u/LiliumAstrale 18h ago

aw man I wish I had found your mod! but yes, it looks like they've fixed it in 1.20.1. I haven't tested it yet, but hopefully it's really fixed!

u/preckles 1d ago edited 19h ago

Every time I play China or Japan, I wonder if I’m missing something.

China feels like you’re mostly doing inspections, then you just wait. And Japan feels like you’re not doing anything at all.

3

u/Scratch_Careful 18h ago

It sucks there is no way to force inheritance on specific titles in China. I wanted to roleplay as a dynasty loyalist who defends the frontier (either northern great wall border or silk road like the Guiyi prefecture) but next generation you lose it all to get some random province.

I wish the cycle was less an explosion into kingdoms and more increasing autonomy, less centralised control until the centre collapses completely and the process then reverses until the centre is a true hegemon again.

3

u/preckles 18h ago

Yeah.

Playing China as a lower rank than an emperor just makes you feel like you’re fully at the mercy of the game.

Like, you’re in an incredible position and location, and suddenly the emperor "promotes" you by sending you to the poorest region across the map that is also currently being decimated by a plague.

0

u/Substantial-Cake8982 8h ago

Wow, definitely different to my current game. I'm playing around China for the first time (returned to the game after 3 years). Starting as a nestorian tribal chief on the northern border, minding my own business with fellow tribal and nomadic neighbors when all of a sudden China exploded into Division in the lifetime of my first chieftain.

From there it's been roller-coaster, like ck2 byzantines on steroids so far 😀

1

u/EEguy21 20h ago

Same here. I really don’t get it

1

u/EpicDDT_ 1d ago

Yeah, Ritsuryo seem boring af. That's why Soryo exist.

5

u/The_Noremac42 1d ago

The only time I really played around in Asia is when I did an immortal adventurer run and traveled from England all the way to Japan.

1

u/The_Yukki 23h ago

Damn, you needed immortality for meta loop?

34

u/MiguelIstNeugierig Excommunicated 1d ago

Starting from scratch in China and working your way up to Minister and then uprooting the incompetent Tang lineage from the throne was fun, but I wouldnt imagine myself doing it twice.

Adminstrative-like realms are so micro-heavy compared to the classic gameplay loop

10

u/RyanB1228 1d ago

“God what I wouldn’t give for claims on a neighboring duchy”

-Man playing as a tourma in the Byzantines

1

u/The_Yukki 23h ago

How do you even manage to do that, tang explode like 5 years into game start for me every single time. (And then china never unifies again).

1

u/MiguelIstNeugierig Excommunicated 16h ago

It didnt in my game I guess haha. Some shenanigans ended with a child on the throne, which guess I sniped the throne of before they could shatter China into a billion peaces.

It was already threading towards the bad chinese era anyway when I did this and dropped the game, so Idk, it may have shattered under me if I continued playing

1

u/geschiedenisnerd 16h ago
  1. By playing...gasp...the 1066 start date. The 867 bookmark for china is if you want to go full warlord, for full bureaucratic gameplay you need the later bookmarks.

  2. China reunifies a lot in my games, so it is not an universal issue

3

u/The_Yukki 12h ago

Tang is only a thing in 867 though, and the person I replied to mentioned going beurocrat to uproot tang.

1066 its song dynasty iirc.

8

u/GrandFleshMelder 1d ago

And I have barely touched Haestein

3

u/northerncal Inbred 1d ago

I've quite enjoyed it, although I actually started in Central Vietnam, but have fully embedded my dynasty across every Kingdom in China by this point.

Also Genghis Khan became my hegemonic tributary, and I helped guide, fund, and defend his descendents (currently on his grandson or great grandson) with the goal of getting the Mongol horde to reach the Atlantic by conquering Normandy lol. Thanks to me jumping in on defensive wars, Genghis' Borjigin dynasty survived the succession wars intact after shattering, and have since managed to slowly reconquer their supposed successor states and continue to move westward.

It's actually an interesting new kind of challenge to try such an indirect NPC domain related goal.

2

u/EEguy21 1d ago

It’s so boring

1

u/Spookyelectrik_real 1d ago

i managed to do an adventurer play where i captured japan and was the ruling family by a high margin for the entirety of it never had any trouble getting what i wanted from my subordinates. Japanese administrative govt can be fun but i didnt have much else to do but take korea and siberia then hege china.

I got the dlc and barely touched the east because I'm a dumbass and it's all so complicated..

u/Aggressive_Hat_9999 1d ago

remember when not playing on iron mode you werent eligible for any achievements?

lol

171

u/Fiskmaster Sviþjod 1d ago

I have almost 800 hours in CK2 and precisely 0 achievements because of this. I can't ever do an unmodded Ironman run now because it would ruin my perfect 0% completion.

54

u/Frazzledragon 23h ago

Now I'm imagining you as a person who plays all video games by precisely mapping out in advance, what you can do without getting any achievements.

"Complete the tutorial" must be a real gamestopper.

18

u/ginaj_ 17h ago

I have 2 achievements across thousands of hours on CK2 and CK3, and they’re the “get married” achievements

4

u/notprussia69 17h ago

Same lmao

Can we do mods again for eu5 and still go for achievements?

Stellaris too

57

u/gujwdhufj_ijjpo 1d ago

I didn’t know stellaris did too

27

u/Elitewrecker 1d ago

Can't with checksum-modifying mods though.

3

u/Felab_ 1d ago

Hmm, isn't there a workaround it though ?

2

u/Joe_The_Eskimo1337 Decadent 22h ago

Any workaround would modify the checksum.

2

u/Elitewrecker 18h ago

There is a file hacking method to restore achievements for that save, I think.

3

u/IrregularPackage 1d ago

i know at various times there’s been a mod that reenables achievements

4

u/Bobrocks20 1d ago

Wait what

13

u/fast-as-a-shark 1d ago

Vic3 had it since launch, ck3 pretty recently.

4

u/EEguy21 1d ago

What?????

-15

u/NikEy 1d ago

wtf. why?! what's the point of it then if it's basically trivial to achieve now?

49

u/HumbleYeoman 1d ago

Because video game achievements are a trivial thing.

-12

u/NikEy 1d ago

What an odd comment. Some of the achievements are very hard to get in Ironman, yet trivial if you can just reload at any time. What's the point of making this so easy? Why not just use a trainer for infinite gold?

14

u/ness_monster 1d ago

Because you can use basically a trainer to unlock all achievements on steam. So why care?

10

u/HumbleYeoman 1d ago

You can already save scum ironman by finding the save file in your file explorer and making a copy elsewhere on your computer so not allowing saving normally was only deterring the uninformed. As for why I would say why not they don’t matter and don’t mean anything which is why I called them trivial.

1

u/The_Yukki 23h ago

You could also force crash your game to make it not save on exist if something really bad happened. Think I did it once in ck2 when doing rome run.

1

u/The_Yukki 23h ago

Which one is, only one I can think of is MOAB (or whatever the white animal hunt one is called mainly because it relies on RNG that's 99% outside of player control. Everything else is super gameable.

1

u/Scoliosis_51 1h ago

You could alteady do that + Noone is forcing you. You can still play ironman and get the achievements that way if you'd like

7

u/Arsustyle 1d ago

it was dumb that you had to play with bugfix and (many) cosmetic mods disabled to get achievements

7

u/Sbotkin Hellenism FTW 1d ago

Including modding, yes.

67

u/tayto175 Ireland 1d ago

The only reason I play on iron-man mode ks becuase i forget the save when I log off.

142

u/Hanibal293 1d ago

Theres literally the option for exit saves which is enabled by default

32

u/Magger 1d ago

Yes, I liked it that way

215

u/Aggressive_Hat_9999 1d ago

I didnt

The game has many vague descriptions or gamebreaking bugs that the inability to reload saves can ruin an entire run in my own opinion

107

u/MiguelIstNeugierig Excommunicated 1d ago

And the ironman save files can just be save scummed either way, so it was just the game forcing you to waste more time on it, as cheats arent even native to these new games anymore (unlike HOI4, VICKY2, EU4, stellaris and CK2, which have a native cheat console)

Its a good change

20

u/Andrei144 Wallachia 1d ago

They still have the console you just have to start the game in debug mode.

10

u/Adler718 1d ago

Although it is annoying to have the game running with it because you get way too much information on characters cluttering the UI. And afaik you have to restart the game, to turn it back on, if you turned it off.

-4

u/MiguelIstNeugierig Excommunicated 1d ago

Yeah yeah, they have a debug mode which is an hassle in of itself to boot up, in comparison to the native console

7

u/Andrei144 Wallachia 1d ago

I meant that there's still a console and it's still native since it's built into the game and you don't have to use mods to use it. The only change they made was disabling the shortcut to open it when you're not already in debug mode. But yeah fair enough, it is a lot less convenient, especially with how long the game takes to start.

4

u/Sanator27 1d ago

it's easy as fuck to get debug mode to work with CheatEngine pointers, even enabling and disabling achievements

13

u/wilkonk 1d ago edited 1d ago

yeah I used to make backups of iron man saves to avoid losing to bugs but it did sort of make the requirement pointless, since being able to do that made it basically an honour system anyway and you can do the same thing without ironman

5

u/Hellioning 1d ago

Yeah I've heard of so many 'my good heir died so my game crashed' jokes that it's not like iron man mattered.

3

u/matbot55 20h ago

Also not having an ironman requirement encourages experimentation, particularly for newer players.

When Vic3 was released, it was way easier to get into the game than other PDX games, since you could just try out stuff and figure out what works, without losing everything or needing to look up meta stuff online.

After both CK3 and Stellaris removed the ironman restriction I've also had a lot more enjoyment playing, since I just engaged with more systems than previously.

As a contrast, I find it to be highly frustrating when I try a new build in hoi4 and I just lose an hour of my time.

3

u/IndividualShelter985 1d ago

I love when my realm breaks apart because a dissolution faction demand popped up a microsecond before I was about to click something else, don't you?

-6

u/Coloss260 1d ago

that's what made achievements feel like 'real' achievements, after all, they serve no other purpose than showing people that you've dedicated an entire run just for a virtual medal

38

u/Substantial_Dish_887 1d ago

so the game bugging somehow means you haven't done it?

it's only real if you do it 6 times because the first 5 had gamebreaking bugs?

-15

u/Coloss260 1d ago

game breaking bugs are a separate issue, but the ironman system by itself is perfectly fine

22

u/Substantial_Dish_887 1d ago

problem is we're never going to be able to seperate ourselves from that issue.

the bugs keep coming. many of them don't even get fixed.

if you want to play ironman more power to you but enforcing it for achivements as if it isn't "real" unless you happen to be lucky enough that bug doesn't kill your run is pathetic.

you have no reason to be so worried about others being able to get you precious medals. nobody gives a shit what medals you have or don't. if you can't find personal satisfaction then it's pointless. who cares if someone else have cheated to get them? they could do that anyway with ironman enforced.

-4

u/Coloss260 1d ago

I mean, I do agree with your points, but then what's the point of having achievements, if you can just cheat them?

I mean, to be fair, it might just be a "me" issue, I do like having a little challenge along with my achievements, but to each their own

14

u/Substantial_Dish_887 1d ago

but then what's the point of having achievements, if you can just cheat them?

so they should be deleted entirely? because no matter what you do people can cheat them.

i don't feel i don't have a challenge because i'm not forced to and don't play in iron man. but then i don't have a compulsion to take actions that ammount to cheating my way to get the achivements.

going back to a previous save when a bug fucks me over i don't consider cheating.

8

u/Aowyn_ Sicily 1d ago

You still have to actually do the achievement, its just that now you won't waste hours of your life if the game bugs or you make a run ruining mistake.

22

u/EastArmadillo2916 Incapable 1d ago

"Getting your 9 hour achievement run ruined by a gamebreaking bug is what makes it feel like a real achievement"

-6

u/Coloss260 1d ago

If you were able to read and process information, you would suddenly realise that this is not what I have said

11

u/EastArmadillo2916 Incapable 1d ago

If you were able to read and process information you wouldn't have responded to someone pointing out that gamebreaking bugs can ruin an entire run with "Well that's what make achievements feel real" then decide to get mad at me for pointing out how ridiculous that sounds.

-2

u/Coloss260 1d ago

What I have said is that the inability to reload saves is what I feel like serves the "you have achieved something" part of the achievements, game breaking bugs are an annoying part of the process, but this is what should be solved, I believe that the way to gain achievements is fine as it is in paradox games

8

u/EastArmadillo2916 Incapable 1d ago

That was not what you said. What you said was

"that's what made achievements feel like 'real' achievements, after all, they serve no other purpose than showing people that you've dedicated an entire run just for a virtual medal"

If what you meant was that "the inability to reload saves is what serves the achievement part of achievements and game breaking bugs are bad but aren't intended so not a legitimate reason to remove ironman mode requirements"

Then that's all well and good, but you did not in fact say that so don't go getting mad at me for not mindreading you when you said something completely different from what you actually intended.

3

u/Coloss260 1d ago

Alright, you've won the debate, I admit defeat, that's indeed what I meant, but what I said was too vague

1

u/Gyerfry 21h ago

Okay but you understand why the context of your comment would lead someone to think that's what you were saying, right?

1

u/Coloss260 19h ago

you're kicking a dead horse, man

5

u/No_Obligation4496 1d ago

Tell me why?

14

u/Magger 1d ago

The game is way too easy as is, specially if you can reload saves. Theres no sense in achievement upon getting achievements.
But more importantly, iron man forced you to experience failures and have the best campaigns play out as a result of it. Losing a war, getting a coalition you cant beat, being deposed, and then gaining that all back afterwards, is what CK3 is all about. Those are the type of stories the game wants players to experience.
You could argue I can still play iron man, and youre right. I still do from time to time. But now I find myself just often going for non ironman as there is no more incentive.

However I did read many of the comments in regards to iron man saves bugging out lategame and preventing achievements. That does really sway my opinion.

11

u/No_Obligation4496 1d ago edited 1d ago

Oh sorry I was making a Backstreet Boys reference. Never wanna make you say all that but that seems reasonable.

6

u/Scorp_DS 1d ago

He wants it that way

4

u/Magger 1d ago

Hahaha oops

1

u/darthchoker 16h ago

I love it now, it was the case that I wanted to use a lot of QoL or GUI mods that made the game achivement incompatible, I personally have only played in Iron-man and see no reason to play otherwise because I like taking both the wins and the losses.

0

u/DrButeo 1d ago

That's why I only achievement hunt in CK2

290

u/JeranF 1d ago

0.4% according to my steam. Must be a bug, most people don't care about achievements.

103

u/Ill_Constant_2021 1d ago

the other 99.6% of us are still trying to pick a wife

28

u/V3mu 1d ago

Yeah, something similar happened on my Steam, all achievements had 100%. So either a glitch or people have really taken a shine to achievement hunting.

27

u/Netherknight666 Lunatic 1d ago

Is that Koifish reference?

5

u/ExchangeDeep9882 1d ago

Indeed it is.

17

u/Scyobi_Empire Possessed 21h ago

that’s wrong, i haven’t. paradox clearly doesn’t consider me a player, this is devastating and i shall never financially recover from this /j

12

u/aiusepsi 1d ago

It’s a bug. Steam is adding the ability for devs to group achievements by DLC, and when the devs add those groupings on the Steam backend, it seems to screw up the percentage complete numbers for achievements from DLC. CK3 added the groupings to the backend a day or two ago.

It’ll probably all work itself out when the feature fully comes out and the groups are visible in the UI.

10

u/AmbitiousEmphasis64 1d ago

Is the achievement name a reference to Koifish

2

u/catashe84 1d ago

Of course, at this point they should make a jarl koifish.. might not be historical but it be funny as hell watching him take over the world with a char named after him

3

u/Antanarau The Apostate 1d ago

I mean, isn't there the guy from Kingdom Come Deliverance present as an adventurer? Might as well make Koifish an adventurer in 867 starting somewhere in the area/near the area of Mr Haesteinn

1

u/JarjarSW Sea-king 22h ago

Not only that, but most of the devs have their own characters aswell.

1

u/geschiedenisnerd 16h ago

As one of haesteinn's knights, maybe

1

u/DokFraz 18h ago

The name, the icon, and the deed.

7

u/SirThiridim 1d ago

Why does this achievement exist? It's so random like why exactly Jarl Haesteinn?

18

u/AnonymousBI2 1d ago

Because he became a very popular starting character so the devs were nice about it

3

Interesting.

4

Unlocked in December 2025. Haesteinn's diplomatic range has transcended time itself.

So you're telling me I did this just before the new release for no good reason?

Same bug for me, and it also applies to achievements I don't have. I guess I'm not part of 100% of players :(

American Truck Simulator has this same bug for me as well with achievements

The hardest part is getting the already old as fuck Haesteinn to live long enough and then do the conquest. The actual conquest isn't terribly difficult, at least not off the bat.
