SubReddit Announcement: A New Rule and Deputy Moderators

Hello everyone,

I know, you folks barely hear from us moderators. Truth is, we're both super busy and really only show up when called upon. I recently stumbled upon a post here bemoaning an up-tick of low-effort posts where people expect an unrealistic amount of hand-holding without much apparent thought of their own on the level of ask they are making. Therefore, a few changes around here to help keep this place tidy:

  • A new rule! No low-effort posts:

Cosplayers are passionate craftspeople. The skills and knowledge that you come here seeking comes from effort born of that passion. If you would like help with your costume, all that we ask is that you show a bit of that effort yourself. Posts must show some time and thought from you on the project you are requesting help with, and some basic understanding of the scope it would entail. Not just a blanket "I want this, HELP PLEASE!"

  • New Deputy Moderators: I'd say I'm introducing you to these people, but you see from them more than you've ever seen from me. I've reached out to some of our most vocal commenters and granted them the power to moderate posts and comments. Rather than having to report rule-breaking posts, which they have been very good at, they now have the power to directly clean them up themselves. I'll still pop in if somebody needs to be banned or larger changes need to be made, but I've seen consistent great advice from these people, and I trust them to maintain the quality of discussion here on r/CosplayHelp. Everyone say thank you to:

Cosplay 101 answers to a lot of basics

First and foremost. Your health and safety is more important than 100% accuracy. If making or wearing the item will be dangerous or painful don’t do it.

Second, I’d add this info to the FAQ but it appears I don’t have enough karma to update it personally! If the info is in the FAQ I did not duplicate it here! (The FAQ is on the sidebar! It wasn’t visible before for some reason but it’s up now!)

This is not a comprehensive list, but I hope to be able to update it when I come across new or important information! I do hope if you’re looking for something not featured here, it will at least give you a base knowledge set on how to be able to search for what you’re looking for.

------------------GENERAL TIPS-----------------------------

(Where to find certain things, very basic crafting info)

EDIT TO REMOVE INFO ABOUT COSPLANNER APP, it doesn't appear to exist anymore!

-To find patterns, or specific props. These are host websites for artists or creators where they can sell things like Etsy, or Redbubble. Etsy is a fantastic place to look for patterns to make props or cosplay pieces, sometimes you can even find people open for commissions! Artists on instagram will almost always have links to their shops to buy things, so explore there too.

-To find cheaper clothing pieces, props, or things to be altered try thrift stores. So Goodwill or other small local resale shops. This will likely take more than one trip so don’t give up if you don’t get it in one go. Ebay is also a good place to check believe it or not, there’s just a slight learning curve to searching things to find what you want.

-Dance and Athletic apparel websites will have things like leotards, bodysuits, specialized undergarments etc. They’re going to be a little pricier but they’ll be good quality, durable, and 9 times out of 10 machine washable!

-Hardware stores, paintball and airsoft companies, military/paramilitary surplus, and second hand sports equipment stores may also be good places to check for bits and pieces. Paintball/airsoft will also have a variety of masks and helmets that can be painted and altered.

-VERY IMPORTANT FOR PROP WEAPONS: Always look into your local guidelines and convention rules to see what kinds of prop weapons are allowed! Some cons have strict policies on what can and cannot be brought in!

-Michael’s, Joann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby etc. and any local craft stores will have tons and tons of craft supplies. If you want to save money and keep up to date on sales check to see if you can join an email list. I know Joann’s has coupons in them all the time!

-You can buy a variety of brands of fabric paint from almost anywhere that sells craft supplies. This makes it easy to get designs or patterns on most fabrics. For changing the color of an entire garment I’d recommend dying it.

-Some fabrics can be dyed different colors very easily, some cannot. A good way to tell is if the fabric is natural (cotton, linen etc.) it is generally easier to dye. The more synthetic (fake) a fabric is the longer and slightly more complicated it will be. Tulip is an excellent dye brand and they offer both regular and synthetic dyes with nice simple instructions right on the packages!

-You can make stencils out of craft foam or thicker paper to make it easier to copy logos or symbols on whatever you’re making!

-Wig and contact websites are listed in the FAQ but there are companies like dental distortions that make tooth veneers that can take a cosplay to the next level!

-Hollywood makeup, FX, and costume professionals almost always have social media accounts they can be extremely helpful when it comes to reference images! For example the costumer who designed the Moon Knight suits has tons of detail and behind the scenes images on her instagram!

-Complicated cosplays can be simplified by boiling down the costume to its essentials the best way I’ve learned to do this is through toys or fan art. What things are essential to recognizing the character and what things could be left off! You don’t have to be 100% to be recognizable!

-If big all out cosplays aren’t your thing you can always try “bounding.” You’ll hear “Disneybounding” most often but you can do it with other things too of course! Disney doesn’t allow adults to dress as characters in their parks, but fans got creative. “Bounding” is more about matching colors, getting similar accessories, or finding just the right combination of things to make you think of the character. It’s hard to explain verbally but easy to understand once you look into it!

-Say you have an OC, and you want to cosplay your OC. That’s fine! Have at it! You’ve got no professional media to tie you down! All these tips can still help you find or make your cosplay!

-I do have a friendly reminder though, please remember you cannot expect people to know who your character is. And it’s not fair to get mad at them if they make a guess and the guess is wrong. A simple “Nope its an OC!” is plenty for most people! I’ve complimented plenty of cosplayers and asked about their cosplay only to find out it was an OC!

“Crossplay” safety

-DO NOT BIN D YOUR CHEST WITH ACE BANDAGES IT’S UNSAFE. Compression tops or more heavy duty sports bras are much safer. If the character has an open shirt you can use wig tape/skin tape to hold the material of the shirt to your skin. If you do not have breasts but are looking to add some to a cosplay you can always pad a bra. You’ll want to measure your chest around your pectorals, that will be the band size, the letter size will be the cup. So a 34A means your chest is 34 inches around and A would be the cup size you would be looking to fill. (I have more on taking measurements later.) Companies now sell latex chests with or without breasts for people looking to be the most accurate they can.

-You can always just “genderbend” the thing and cosplay them as the same gender you are. It’s okay. People do it all the time and it’s very widely accepted. There’s also a third, more neutral option, don’t obviously genderbend the thing? You don’t have to call attention to the fact that you’re not the same gender as the character you’re cosplaying.

-An example of what I’m trying to explain: I generally read as female, but have cosplayed Johnny Cage one of the male characters from Mortal Kombat. His base look is shirtless, with his own first name tattooed across his chest. The only change I made was putting “Johnny” on a crop top. I didn’t “feminize” the rest of the outfit or go out of my way to be read as male. There is a “middle option” when it comes to presentation and cosplay. At the end of the day everybody knows it’s just a costume.

-This tip might seem dumb, but you’re going to have to trust me here. This mainly applies to people looking to make large costume pieces or props by hand. People who are already kind of intermediate with their skills. If you’re stuck on something go see how furries would make it. Not kidding. I’ve made all kinds of non-furry things with tutorials put on the internet by a furry. The vast majority of them are fun, friendly people and the community as a whole is WILDLY talented and creative. You only ever really hear about the bad apples.

A big question I see here is “what is that piece of clothing?” That’s a good question! Here are some links to historical fashion databases! They’re all arranged a little differently BUT this is a place to start looking for what specific pieces of clothing or styles are called!

Here’s another important pro tip.

It’s okay.

Your cosplay doesn’t have to be perfect.

Cosplay is for fun and if it doesn’t feel fun or rewarding don’t do it. Other con goers and cosplayers aren’t going to judge you. If they do for some reason and try to make you feel bad about it, that says more about THEM and their personality than your ability. Everybody has to start somewhere. Nobody should be ashamed of learning and practicing and getting better. You can always go back and fix things or redo whole cosplays later on after your skills develop. This is a hobby and you have the right to participate in said hobby your own way.

I can add theatrical or FX makeup tips? things like scars, bruises, old age makeup, or like changing the face shape with very specific contouring?

I also have a draft of Convention tips similar to this post, would that be helpful as well?

Wig wig advide

Hi all,

I’m in the process or restyling my venti wig and I want to know what glitter people recommend to use for wigs and what worked best for them (E.g. mixing glue and glitter or a glitter spray). the only thing is I do not like the look of really chunky glitter on me personally so the super fine glitter. sort of like this navia wig I saw on insta.

I have tried glitter spray that you get on amazon but it is hardly noticeable and transferred all over my cosplay staining it because of the binder used to make it spray.

It’s going to be a Fem venti / Barbatos wig and I want the glitter to make the lighter blue look very sparkly.

Does anyone have recs? (I have attached photos of the base wig)

Thanks in advance!

Accessory I need some help wearing a hat that is designed to sit back on a wig.

I need help trying to figure out the best way to wear this hat I bought back in the spring. I bought it from a designer, and it's a very nice hat, but the designer said he made it in a way that it was designed to be worn how Lucifer wears his in the show, sitting back on his head.

I should have just told him not to bother with that and had him make the hat to go on my head like a normal hat, but I didn't, and that was my mistake.

So now I need to figure out how to wear it and I'd like to wear it to an event on Saturday since I did pay for it.

He gave me some rare earth magnets, but I can't for the life of me see how to wear them. There's no where I can put the magnets that they will be able to make contact with magnets under my wig,. You can see in the pic how I tried to do the magnets, but the magnets are vertical, and under my wig they are horozontal. It seems like he would have needed to make the entire underside of the hat flat for me to use magnets.

The only other idea I have is something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/JIUSERLU-Pieces-7-teeth-Secure-Accessories

And superglue them to the interior rim of the hat and then let them side down into the wig.

I would truly appreciate any assistance.

One quick edit, the hat is all vinyl so I'm not sure there's anything I can sew onto it,

Sewing How would you create this mane out of faux fur fabric?

I’m making a Light Dragon mask. What do you think would be the best way to create her mane? I have some yellow faux fur fabric. I was thinking I could create a bunch of little ‘tubes’ of fabric and lightly stuff with polyfil and then maybe glue some tufts in between to blend together, but do you have any other ideas?

Edit: thank you so much, everyone! You’ve given me some great ideas and I’ve got some new ways of looking at this. I really appreciate your feedback

Sticking cobwebs to material?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello!

I’m trying to make a pair of trousers look dusty with Halloween cobwebs. I had a great time adding them to the jacket because it was a wool/cotton blend, but the trousers are polyester.

Any ideas? Preferably it would dry clear, flexible and matte. I’ve tried a watered down PVA as I had some but the polyester just sucks it up.

Prop Should I use pva or flexable primer on my foam?

I'm making a cosplay of a scout from peak and I'm working on creating the head. I used 5mm eva foam and caulk to fill in the seams. I will be painting with acrylic paint or maybe spray paint.

Ive hear people say you can use diluted pva glue to seal before painting along as your foam wont be bending. Mine can bend slightly if pressed on but it won't bend much or often.

So would using pva glue be okay or should I buy some flexible primer

Buying Survivor Jayce Arcane Jacket

I’m new to cosplay and this will be my second cosplay ever, (my first being Ichigo in the soul society arc) but I’m having a really hard time finding an affordable white blazer for season two Jayce from Arcane.

I plan on just getting a normal blazer (since tailcoats are rarely made so most are custom and expensive) and just sewing on a tailcoat with some extra fabric.

The help I need is some affordable plain all white blazers that you think would match his attire. Any help is appreciated and thank you all in advance!

Prop Am I over engineering this? Any advice is appreciated!

Hi I’m planning on making Susie’s axe from Deltarune.

Okay so the plan is to make a base made of pvc pipe (red) which I would warp with a heat gun to resemble a curved axe handle make the axe head out of insulation foam, sand that down into the correct shape then glue Eva on the whole thing for smoothness and seal and paint after that.

I want the whole thing to be able to collapse into 3 parts. Saw this method on google while I was brainstorming and was going to copy it for collapsing mechanisms.

I’ve asked a few friends about what they think I should do and have gotten some different ideas. One was to switch out the pvc for aluminum since I’m worried about the weight being too much but I’m not sure I could shape the handle how I wanted to then. The other was to not do a L shaped PVC pipe and just have it be a straight pipe but I’m really worried about the weight distribution (friend says that how I have it planned out put more stress on the L joint) and I’m sure which of us are correct.

This is my first time making a prop this big and I want to get it right

Thank you so much for your time and I’m open for anything!

Puff paint removal

Post image
108 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I need help I made a big mistake when puff painting my spider-man suit. I used my arm to puff paint the sleeve since I don’t have a mannequin. Unfortunately I didn’t take the sleeve off cleanly enough which resulted in the image you see in my post. I tried using alcohol then warm water with dish soap to see if I could remove a good portion of it and it doesn’t seem like it did the trick. I don’t know what to do, I spent a lot of time sewing these two spandex shirts together and prefer not to mess it up too badly.

Cirno Cosplay Help

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello!

It's been awhile since I've done anything cosplay related, and I want to do a cosplay of Cirno.

I'm thinking the best way to go about it is to get a white blouse and a blue dress, and then sew the white on at the bottom of the blue dress at the bottom, and then just have the ribbon be there. I have a solid idea for the wings (even if it's just paint and cardboard)

Figure I'd ask others how they would approach this :)

Buying Doki doki sent me the wrong size and color?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hi everyone.

Maybe this is a stupid question I really don’t know. I don’t do cosplays nor do I know anything about them.

I ordered a furina SR cosplay off of doki doki to wear for Halloween (she’s my fave character).
I ordered the dark version (she has a light and dark version in game and the store offers both versions as its own costume) and I picked size XL cause I’m to Asian standards quite a tall girl.

Well today my parcel arrived and I opened it only to find the pants and the top are white (the light version) and also every clothing package has an S sticker on them. I was also surprised cause my shop app says that my furina clothing parcel is still allegedly in Osaka while the doki doki website says the shipment has been fulfilled.

I immediately checked my email receipt and although it does mention I ordered a dark version, it doesn’t clearly state anywhere that I selected a certain size. And the shipping states original version while the item states dark? I am so so so confused.

Right now I’m lowkey scared cause it was really expensive and since my ‘evidence’ is kind of lacking I fear I might not get refunded or possibly get a new one. And even if I did it would definitely not arrive before Halloween.

Does anyone have any experience with this and is there anyone who knows if it’s worth it for me to reach out or of there is any way to check that I did get the correct something.

Armor Paint or Primer for base coat?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I’m about to move onto painting my ODST cosplay and wanted to know which is better in my situation as a base coat, flat black primer or flat black paint? I’ve seen both used and I’m nervous I’ll choose the wrong one after 300+ hours of work.

My props have been uniformly wet sanded with up to 1500 grit. I’d say the fillable sandable primer they’re coated with covers about 95% of the entire surface area, but as you can see from the photos, there are a few spots that aren’t covered by primer, revealing the underlying bondo putty or plastic.

After my base coat, I plan on applying another coat of aluminum paint before using liquid latex followed by my top coat paints, an oil bath, and a clear coat.

Buying Need help with Slay the Spire Merchant cosplay

Thumbnail

So for Halloween and an upcoming convention, I thought I'd do a slay the spire merchant costume, but somehow I'm really struggling to find a blue robe that captures the look. I've attached the character and two examples that I think look good. Ive tried searching for robes, cloaks, tunics, hoodies, and even surfing ponchos among other obscure names for whatever you would call it. Unfortunately for the life of me I just can't find anything thats a good match that seems like it would come from a reputable store and in time for the holiday. I know I'm cutting it a bit close but didn't really think I was doing a costume until this week.

Maybe it's just that with halloween season in full swing, theres a much larger variety of costumes that makes it hard to search, but if you happen to know of any good shops or even a specific product any help would be appreciated. While not my preference, I would be willing to make my own, but I have almost no experience sewing so I don't know what type of materials are easy to work with or what patterns I might consider for something basic

Fabric choices and attachments

needing help with fabric choices for a nangong yu costume! im going the leotard with a skirt route (like the first image) rather than a dress type situation I’ve seen cosplay websites do. I have all the fabrics for the other parts,I just need help with the main body (the leotard and white layer of the skirt).I’m thinking whatever I use for the leotard,I should use for the skirt because it seems like all the white fabrics I buy that arent the exact same fabrics, are wildly different shades of white. but I’m not too sure, and also im a little lost on how to attach the skirts together, and then to the leotard. since the pleats/ ruffles are so large and are in a roller coaster type of shape rather than just straight across, it’s not making since in my brain how I’d sew it down to my leotard. sorry if none of that made since, I have no idea what I’m talking about either 😓

Armor How to make openable chest cavity and spring heart for Spamton NEO costume

I'm following this video on how to do Spamton NEO for Halloween, and the video didn't show how exactly they made his chest cavity for his heart openable, as well as how the heart springs around when opened. Could anyone help me figure that out?
