SubReddit Announcement: A New Rule and Deputy Moderators

Hello everyone,

I know, you folks barely hear from us moderators. Truth is, we're both super busy and really only show up when called upon. I recently stumbled upon a post here bemoaning an up-tick of low-effort posts where people expect an unrealistic amount of hand-holding without much apparent thought of their own on the level of ask they are making. Therefore, a few changes around here to help keep this place tidy:

  • A new rule! No low-effort posts:

Cosplayers are passionate craftspeople. The skills and knowledge that you come here seeking comes from effort born of that passion. If you would like help with your costume, all that we ask is that you show a bit of that effort yourself. Posts must show some time and thought from you on the project you are requesting help with, and some basic understanding of the scope it would entail. Not just a blanket "I want this, HELP PLEASE!"

  • New Deputy Moderators: I'd say I'm introducing you to these people, but you see from them more than you've ever seen from me. I've reached out to some of our most vocal commenters and granted them the power to moderate posts and comments. Rather than having to report rule-breaking posts, which they have been very good at, they now have the power to directly clean them up themselves. I'll still pop in if somebody needs to be banned or larger changes need to be made, but I've seen consistent great advice from these people, and I trust them to maintain the quality of discussion here on r/CosplayHelp. Everyone say thank you to:

Welcome! A quick note about posting.

Hi all! So glad to see people posting here. This subreddit is still a baby, but I thought I would add a casual rule when posting. If applicable, please be sure to include a link to a photo that relates to the question your asking. If you need help with a character, link to that character. If you need help with a sewing method, show what you're trying to replicate. This will help us be able to help you better!

My first ever cosplay: Mimikyu! 👻

Hi everyone! I'm completely new to cosplay, and this is my very first costume. I've been working on my handmade Mimikyu cosplay, and it's still a work in progress!

I'm currently adding some weathering to the fabric, customizing the little Mimikyu plush on my shoulder, and finishing the staff.

I'm really excited to get into the cosplay community, learn new things, and improve my skills. 💜

Any advice, tips, or constructive criticism is more than welcome! I'd love to hear what you think and what I could improve.

Thanks for checking out my first cosplay!

Buying Need help with Slay the Spire Merchant cosplay

So for Halloween and an upcoming convention, I thought I'd do a slay the spire merchant costume, but somehow I'm really struggling to find a blue robe that captures the look. I've attached the character and two examples that I think look good. Ive tried searching for robes, cloaks, tunics, hoodies, and even surfing ponchos among other obscure names for whatever you would call it. Unfortunately for the life of me I just can't find anything thats a good match that seems like it would come from a reputable store and in time for the holiday. I know I'm cutting it a bit close but didn't really think I was doing a costume until this week.

Maybe it's just that with halloween season in full swing, theres a much larger variety of costumes that makes it hard to search, but if you happen to know of any good shops or even a specific product any help would be appreciated. While not my preference, I would be willing to make my own, but I have almost no experience sewing so I don't know what type of materials are easy to work with or what patterns I might consider for something basic

Puff paint removal

Post image
75 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I need help I made a big mistake when puff painting my spider-man suit. I used my arm to puff paint the sleeve since I don’t have a mannequin. Unfortunately I didn’t take the sleeve off cleanly enough which resulted in the image you see in my post. I tried using alcohol then warm water with dish soap to see if I could remove a good portion of it and it doesn’t seem like it did the trick. I don’t know what to do, I spent a lot of time sewing these two spandex shirts together and prefer not to mess it up too badly.

How do I make these look more like Rocky?

Post image
• Upvotes

I’m making a rocky cosplay from Project Hail Mary and I just made and papered these cardboard arms but I feel like they don’t look like Rocky’s arms. How can I make them look better or/and add definition? I’m planning to add the mate marks and other marks.

Wig How can I avoid tangles on my wig?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I recently bought a very long wig and was wondering how I could stop it from getting tangled without having to cripple it, I was thinking of buying a detangling spray for normal hair; I’ve also seen that some people use silicone spray, but I can’t find any, so I was wondering whether it’s worth buying a detangling spray or mixing conditioner with water to apply throughout the day to stop it tangling so much during the convention.

(I’m worried it might get ruined if it gets too tangled, but I don’t want to wear it in braids)

Buying Doki doki sent me the wrong size and color?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone.

Maybe this is a stupid question I really don’t know. I don’t do cosplays nor do I know anything about them.

I ordered a furina SR cosplay off of doki doki to wear for Halloween (she’s my fave character).
I ordered the dark version (she has a light and dark version in game and the store offers both versions as its own costume) and I picked size XL cause I’m to Asian standards quite a tall girl.

Well today my parcel arrived and I opened it only to find the pants and the top are white (the light version) and also every clothing package has an S sticker on them. I was also surprised cause my shop app says that my furina clothing parcel is still allegedly in Osaka while the doki doki website says the shipment has been fulfilled.

I immediately checked my email receipt and although it does mention I ordered a dark version, it doesn’t clearly state anywhere that I selected a certain size. And the shipping states original version while the item states dark? I am so so so confused.

Right now I’m lowkey scared cause it was really expensive and since my ‘evidence’ is kind of lacking I fear I might not get refunded or possibly get a new one. And even if I did it would definitely not arrive before Halloween.

Does anyone have any experience with this and is there anyone who knows if it’s worth it for me to reach out or of there is any way to check that I did get the correct something.

What material should I use instead of cardstock and velcro?

Thumbnail

I went as a pixelated naked sim and initially used velcro (which is visible in the 2nd photo) to hold the card stock in place. I wanted easy removal for when I needed to sit down and to prevent creasing because I was going to a con and after party. I glued a laminated sheet to the back of the cardstock to make it less flimsy. I also glued velcro on the back of the laminated sheet and sewed velcro on my clothes so I could just stick it on. The Velcro did not stay and completely fell off the cardstock. I tried to fix it for a few hours until I gave up and just used safety pins. As you can see not only did the paper rip and crease but the safety pin was hard to put back in the correct place after removing it to use the bathroom. What is a better material to use for the pixels instead of cardstock, that is easy to remove and what can I use instead of glue and velcro next time?

Hi! I’m a beginner cosplayer, and I need some help with Maomao’s hairstyle. I’m cosplaying her everyday apothecary outfit. When I tried to recreate the part of her hair that’s tied back with a blue ribbon, I ended up with part of her forehead being exposed. Honestly, I’m not sure what I did wrong, but it looks really bad. Could you please help me figure out what I need to fix? Thank you so much!

First ever cosplay

Post image

Since the first remake of The Legends of Zelda Major’s mask on the 3ds, I fell in-love with this character (skull kid) and decided that someday I wanna cosplay him and now I’m close to the crafting phase of it, I got my mask template ready and will be working with eva foam. One concern of mine is I’ve never sewn before and idk how I’ll make or buy the gloves, shorts, orange shirt/tunic, hat, and shoes without absolutely wrecking my wallet since im still a college student and I’m doing this as a side project to make my kid self’s dream come true, any tips will be appreciated 🤘🫡

First time styling wig, any feedback for improvement?

Thumbnail

First time styling a wig, non-helmet. Any tips for improving? Also would like to know how wig makers keep the hair strands in place, especially the little strands that stood up. Any tips to keep the hair strands from clumping together and not so stiff looking? Preferably a softer and natural overall look. After using hairspray, the hair just clumps together and it’s kinda hard to get it to separate since it’s so sticky.

Face bandaging with visibility?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi, I'm trying to make a cosplay for a character whos face is fully bandaged (Hyperlaser from Phighting without his helmet) but I'm not sure how to be able to see with it??

I was thinking of doing a strip of mesh where my eyes would be but I'm not sure how I'd set that up either so... help is very much appreciated. The bandaging doesn't need to be wrapped in the exact same way it is in the photo attached. I just need to have face bandages but be able to see.

I already have a headband with the horns but that can be modified if need be. Thanks!

Attaching cloth to sole

Post image
• Upvotes

Could I cut a hole on the bottom of the spandex and glue it to the edges of the sole so it covers it fully?

The sole fits inside the spandex but I have nothing to put on the bottom and I imagine the spandex would get ripped and torn, etc without anything to protect it.

Would it look awful? Any suggested way to do it or even other methods that might work better.

I more than likely will be unable to get something protective to put on the bottom if I was to put the sole inside before I need it done.

I do have other, larger, identical yellow soles.

I have ideas to make it look more shoe like around my toes and heels, just need a way to attach a sole where I can reuse the "shoe" more than once

Thanks in advance!

Wig Needing to do a ponytail wig, but I'm not the best at wig styling so I'm looking for some tips

While I have worn wigs in the past, those were ones that didn't need all that much work so I don't have much experience with properly styling one. I know I'm probably just overthinking it, but I doubt it's as simple as buying a longer haired wig and just tying it into a ponytail

Are counter-strike cosplays legal?

Recently I have been thinking a lot about making a counter-strike cosplay of the counter-terrorist agent B squadron officer | SAS but I was wondering if it was even legal to even dress up as an actual police force? If it was illegal (which I strongly think it is), how could I change the outfit/details enough to make it work?

Buying Spiderman last stand

Thumbnail

I want to dress up as spiderman, more so his last stand costume and I have a sweater that I think gives it an alternative twist to the suit. And I am thinking of buying biker gloves (as shown on the image). I also have black pants and black shows (nike air jordans to be exact, I know his are boots but im working with what I got.) Though my problem is knowing what to do for the mask because I dont have any sewing skills or anything like that but I also dont want to buy an expensive mask. So I don't know what I can do for the mask. Any tips on what I can do for the mask? I would ideally like to have a mask before halloween.

Accessory Shoe alteration/ DIY RHS

Thumbnail

I did some reasearch on this and apparently Oxford soles are especially complicated? If the shoe I wanna use has that stitched sole then that means there was another outer sole added, then everything was sewn together by machine. In these cases, can the whole outer sole be removed so it can be glued to the wood platform? I don't want anything to be in the way of the shoe and the new platform. I have to be picky with the shoe itself to match the design and there isn't a lot without that type of sole. Wikihow says I can do this, but I dunno...

The platform will be custom made. I don't work with wood but I know a guy. We'll carve the part that connects to the shoe and everything. My understanding is most modern shoe makers work with readymade heels anyway. But I can probably ask them to glue the heel on at least. Then I'll paint it and change the laces

(if you don't know what this is, Vivienne Westwood used to make them, and a ton of Japanese brands followed suit. no one's making this design, though)

Prop How can I find a budget-friendly, lightweight manual pull-string mechanism for fluttering fairy wings?

• Upvotes

Hello! I am working on a custom costume project for an original fairy character, and I need some technical advice or sourcing recommendations.

I am looking to find a reputable, specialized moving-wing accessory shop or an independent maker who can build a standalone, hidden pull-string harness.

What I am trying to achieve:

• The Motion: I strictly need a mechanism that creates a small, delicate "fluttering/flapping" motion where single-piece wings rock back and forth. I am not looking for giant bird wings that expand or stretch out sideways.

• The Fit: It needs to be a low-profile backpack-style harness that can be worn flat under a satin dress, with the pull-string running subtly down an arm sleeve to be operated by hand.

• The Budget: I am trying to source just the standalone mechanism/harness framework within a budget-friendly range of $150–$300.

Does anyone know of any indie prop shops, 3D-printing creators, or hobbyist builders who specialize in lightweight, manual wing mechanics like this?

(Note: I am only looking for physical fabrication advice. I will block or report any off-topic 2D digital illustrators or users sending predatory, ridiculously high-priced offers in my DMs.)

Armor PlastiDip or FullDip?

Hello everyone, I'm working on my first cosplay using Eva foam, and I wanted to understand how I can proceed with the first layers of primer for my armor. As a character, I'm working on a male genderbend version of Alice Zuberg from Sword Art Online, and I want to create a matte black base layer on all the pieces before moving on to painting the various parts gold. The problem is that I don't know which one to choose between the two primers. I've heard good things about both brands, although one of them (FullDip) seems to be more economical and available, especially in Europe.

What do you guys recommend? What's the difference in terms of finish? Do they both have the same adhesion? And most importantly, how many cans should I buy?

Thanks everyone for the help!

Trusted websites for male cosplays?

Basically the title. Most of the websites I get pointed towards are for mainly women, Etsy seems kind of a coin toss, and the one site I found with a lot of options is Ezcosplay but I've seen mixed reviews on it.

Buying Trouble finding boots that fit.

I am trying to find some tall black boots to do a Sith costume for Halloween, but I am having trouble finding ones that fit properly.

I recently ordered some that were size 12 (mens) "Han Solo" style boots and the foot part fit great but the calves were probably 4-5" too narrow around so I couldnt zip them past my ankle so I have to send them back.
Anyone have any recommendations on where to look? It doesn't have to be a screen accurate item since i am not cosplaying any particular character.
