I paid off my daily driver this month and am officially on the hunt for a fun car. Both of these cars were on dealer lots in my area and both cars came were excellent examples that had been very well taken care of. Both cases were also "firsts" but to different degrees. I've never driven a Vette before of any generation and while I have driven a 911 before it was a 991.2 which is a much more modern example that comes standard with a turbocharger.
The C6 was a convertible 3LT car with the 6spd. I felt comfortable in it immediately. Comfy seats, nice driving position and was able to easily adjust everything to my liking. It's been a few years since I drove a manual so it took me a few minutes to get comfortable with the bite point of the clutch and how much gas to give on take-off but once I did everything felt gravy.
In terms of the drive itself I like torque and there really is no replacement for displacement. You can lope along in a higher gear and the car just purrs or you can drop a few gears and really feel the car pull hard. I know the 08 and later cars got the LS3 and an extra 30hp but 400 horses in this car felt like more than enough for the street. This is a genuinely enjoyable car that rewards the driver but does not demand so much that it's overbearing and I think that was key to my enjoyment. I could drop the top and drive it as I wanted (sedate or in anger) and I got out with a smile on my face.
Oh and shout out to the ride quality which in the Tour setting (this car had the F55 option) was quite nice!
The 911S was a coupe and was a Tiptronic car. I am far more familiar with Porsche as a brand (I've owned and/or test driven quite a few of their sports cars over the years) but had never had the opportunity to test a 997 before so this was new but also felt similar to the 987 Boxster I owned. 911's do a good job of being small and light (at least these older ones do) while also giving you an open and airy cockpit, even in the coupes. The seats here were also comfortable and excellent which somewhat surprised me because I've never found the Boxster/Cayman seats to be all that comfortable for me.
In terms of the drive the lighter front end of the 911 was immediately apparent. Coupled with the thinner wheel and more precise steering I would say that this was the standout feature for me with this particular car. Yes the flat 6 makes lovely noises above 4 grand but I don't have a strong preference for that sound versus the Corvette's LS motor. Also apparent was the fairly strong smell of crayons. Something about German cars of this era they just have this waft of waxy smelling air through the climate control system. It's both nostalgic and reminiscent of some other Porsche's and BMW's I have owned from this era and it made me chuckle a bit.
I'm not going to give the Tiptronic an automatic (hah) negative. It was fine for what it was. Those are Mercedes Benz units and fairly robust and while it may not have really fit the character of that car I can see why someone that can't or doesn't want to drive a manual would spec one. I know Porsche manuals are generally excellent but this was the car on offer so I made do with what I had.
Back in the day everyone would have said that the 911 had a far superior interior to the Corvette but these days that just does not matter to me. I'm looking for an "experience" car and while both cars were fun to drive and excellent to operate I found myself prefering the Corvette and especially when price is considered.
Corvette's have always been excellent performance value for the money and I suppose that is true here although what I am most impressed by is again, the "experience" value for money as opposed to outright performance. $30k (give or take) can get you a clean, stick shift C6 often with low miles. The one I tested was $32k and had only 29k miles on it and was in exceptional condition throughout. And the driving experience for $32k I do not consider in any way to be inferior to the 911 that I tested and that car was twice the price.
As great as the 997 generation of 911 is I do not think they are worth the asking price these days. The C6 on the other hand? Worth every penny and probably due to appreciate somewhat for the manual cars especially. Obligatory pics time! It probably helped that the C6 was a much prettier spec than the 911!
