Question How Do You Know Valid Feedback?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello,

I recently sent what I've been working on to my friend group, and one person said my graphic novel seemed decent and could see it going somewhere, and this is what one other person has said to me about it.

My question is this, how do you know when you get valid feedback? I worry that maybe I'm just feeling like this person was being rather harsh, and they're not, they're giving me real feedback. Have you ever gotten an opinion on your work and you weren't sure if it was valid or if the person was just trying to be rude or superior? Or maybe they were the wrong demographic?

I would love to hear other authors opinions on this, thank you for your time.

Resource So, I hosted my first comic con exhibit...

... and it was bad.

At least at first.

Then, after sparse sales, and interactions with buyers and "almost but not quite" potential buyers. I learned that you're not really exhibiting and showing off your creations as much as playing the game of managing expectations.

Would I recommend it?

Yes, but don't go in there expecting to make lots of sales or even a lot of new fans. If you go there as an indie creator (especially if your comic con host decides to put you in the infamous "Artist Alley" section) you WILL be neglected and you will be neglected for hours. Dozens, no, hundreds will walk right by you and the most you can hope to get from them is a curious glance before something else grabs their attention.

My advice? Don't take it personally. They're looking for something and you just aren't it. Even if it's for something as shallow as because they never heard of you or what it is you're selling, always keep in mind their budget is not a bottomless pit. All you can do is bring some business cards (Which I foolishly did not have prepared) and give as many of those away as you can if you can't make a sale.

Plus, always tell yourself it's never about the profit (It's almost impossible to make profit). It's about the exposure. You're not going there to cover the cost of the exhibition fee, the trip, and your next project. You;re going there to make sure you get a few more fans who will know your brand and follow it for as long as you don;t give up on it.

So, in short, never think of comic con exhibitions as huge leaps. Just small steps for you to mature as as an artist.

I walked in, had my soul crushed, then walked out not happy, but humbled and relieved for having done it at all.

Question Mods, how can we add images as replies?

Hi Mods, quick question but is it possible to change the settings so we can add images as replies, since this is an image -centric community? I see others doing it. Just curious if it'd be possible to implement.

Crowdfunding 'HITMAN HOTLINE' Issue #2 - October 30th! Kickstarter Sign-up page is now LIVE!

Hello!

As many of you may be aware, a few months back I debuted the first issue of my comic, 'HITMAN HOTLINE', on Kickstarter to (surprisingly) great success (and a BIG thank you to everyone who has shown support to, offered designs, ideas, and feedback since!)... And long story short, I'll soon be releasing Issue 2!

After lots more writing, drawing, procrastinating, colouring, and lettering, I am happy to say this second, extra-large chapter is almost complete! Slightly less punching and kicking - a lot more story, characters, and dialogue. You know, all that good typical book-stuff! I'm also going to be reselling Issue 1 for anyone that missed it!

Unlike last time, I actually have a pre-launch page for this chapter (something which is apparently very important - news to me!) for anyone who wants to sign up to be notified of Issue 2's release, or just to be nosy. Please check out the new kickstarter link below! Thanks!

Looking for Artist - Paid [PAID] Looking for a background + colour artist for WEBTOON Original Cat Bird Dog – $250/episode (20 panel episodes)

Hey everyone!

We're looking for an artist to help us finish upcoming episodes of Cat Bird Dog, our WEBTOON Original.

https://www.webtoons.com/en/comedy/cat-bird-dog/list?title_no=8577

We currently handle the episodes in-house, but we have a few other projects taking up our Creative Director's time at the moment, so we're looking for someone who can take over the backgrounds and colouring while we continue to handle the character artwork.

Each episode is around 20 panels, and we would provide:

  • Panel layouts/composition and character sketches
  • Finished character linework
  • Character colour references
  • Existing episode and location references where available
  • Any additional direction needed for specific environments or props

We would need you to handle:

  • EDIT: As I've had a few questions on requested turnaround time, clarifying here that we will need at least 8 episodes finished by the End of November and 8 again finished before the end of December. Internally we have found our Creative Director alone can do all environments and colour in around a day, so ideally any artist we bring on would need no more than 2 days to complete an episode's backgrounds and colour work. (to test this, the deadline for any tests will be within 2 working days of receiving the test materials).
  • Drawing and lining the backgrounds/environment artwork
  • Working out the background details from the panel layouts, story context and existing Cat Bird Dog style
  • Colouring the characters and backgrounds
  • Simple shading, lighting and finishing where needed to match the look of the existing series

The biggest thing for us is being able to match the existing Cat Bird Dog style consistently. We're not looking to redesign or reinterpret the artwork, but for someone who can slot into the existing production process and help us get episodes over the finish line.

Budget is $250 USD per 20-panel episode.

We'll be testing a few artists, roughly half an episode of content that takes place inside a character's house and the other half episode of content takes place outside in the wider world, so it should give a good idea of how the collaboration works across both interior and exterior environments.

If it goes well, we'd ideally like this to become ongoing work rather than a one-off episode.

If you're interested, please leave a comment with:

  • Your portfolio
  • Any examples of comic/Webtoon work
  • Examples of backgrounds/environment work and colouring
  • Your usual turnaround time for something around this size
  • Your general availability

Experience working from another artist's layouts and character linework is definitely a plus.

No generative AI can be used at any stage of the work.

Thanks!

Looking for Artist - Paid Transformers fan comic

Hi all,

Looking for an artist to illustrate a full 22 page comic - it’s part two of a four part comic story I have: it’s about the battle of Autobot city and focusing on the fates of characters we never saw on screen. Post your information and examples below please! No dms at first as I found out to my detriment!

Issue 1 can be found here:

Question How do indie comic writers publish consistently? With budgetary constraints, is incorporating quality art a barrier for everyone?

I'm curious about the methods of indie authors who release multiple issues per year. A single issue can cost thousands of dollars to illustrate, and rightfully so.

So how do people accomplish this? Can all of the consistent publishers simply afford it, or are there other ways?

I'd especially love to hear from creators who've found sustainable ways to publish without sacrificing the quality of their work or underpaying artists.

Hello everyone, I am currently looking for an artist who wants to collaborate on some character designs, for a superhero comic series, and some 5-10 page ashcan, preview comics as well

Please send your rates for character design or your per page rate. I am looking for someone to do ink, coloring and lettering, but it is obviously not required!

Yule. Geol. Weihnachten. Winter Solstice.
Before the soda drinking bears, before the bright red suit, and before the litany of saccharine films & music that saturate every holiday season, there was cold and night and fear.

The award-nominated collection of short horror comics returns to examine Yule, Winter Solstice, Jacob Marley, and a slew of other terrifying folklore from around the world, from well-known tales of the Mouse King to the lesser-known Kukeri, and all the bizarre traditions in between.

Don't stand idle, back YULE Vol 2 today! Just in time for spooky season, being delivered by Christmas. Whether as to extend the month of fright, or just to make your holy night even less so.

Contributing to this book is an all-star lineup of talent, with each team producing tight-and-terrorizing tales based on 16 different pieces of worldwide folklore:
Jacob Marley - Dillon Gilbertson & Zack Traum
Pére Fouettard - Lesly Julien & Minerva Fox
Werewolves - Ian Mondrick & Frederik Hornung
Nisse - Fellhound & AHG
The Grither - Kat Baumann
Mouse King - u/alairebowen
Yule Cat - Casper Binnett
Joulupukki - Christa "Cabbage" Harader & Han Seelie
Carnival of Mumathones - Morrocco
Kukeri - Sierra Barnes
Saint Knut's Day - David "DB" Andry & Desolina Greigo
Tschaggatta - Don Cardenas
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight - Grant Stoye & Heather Vaughan
La Befana - Amy Chase & Alex Schlitz
The Wreck of 1912 - Toren Chenault & Lauren Houser
Sluagh-Sidhe of Brug Na Boinne - Rae Allen
Cover art by Val Halvorson
Pinup by Pete Collins
Lettering & Book Design by u/tobenracicot

----
Hi all! It's me again, but with a new Kickstarter. One I did not create, but am involved in! Gotta help spread the word of the newest gut wrenching volume of YULE.

❄You can get THE COMIC to read at your bone-side table! (Digital or physical)
❄Spooky PRINTS and POSTERS to adorn your dreadful hollow!
❄ORNAMENTS to hang upon your grotesque and mildly posessed holiday tree! (Exorcisms not included)
❄Even more ways to make the Yuletide GAY! And sad! Hooray!

Image credits for this post are as follows: Graphic by Fell Hound, Pete Collins, Zack Traum, Alaire Racicot (me!), Heather Vaughan, Casper Binnett, Morrocco, Kat Baumann, and Val Halvorson.

Check out YULE Vol 2 here! Thanks everyone!!

Looking for Artist - Unpaid Artists need a writer to execute your vision?

To start with I know this is a much less common form of collaboration but before you go lemme pitch myself to you.

Artists need a writer to execute your vision? Have a concept and lore but looking for someone good at dialogue, character, and all that stuff? I'm a comic book writer with 3 comic projects in the works (one close to crowdfunding.) 2 of those comics are me executing an artist's vision. I made a post similar to this before but honestly I didn't have the experience then that I do now so I didn't feel confident in executing some of the pitches. (And one artist ghosted me, so it goes.) However now I've done much more comic work and as stated work executing others stories and visions. If you'd like to see examples of my work and/or are an artist who is looking for a writer to collaborate with (for free I might add) direct message me on here!

Now a few guidelines before you reach out.

If you have no established lore but rather an idea and some characters. I love this gives me a lot of freedom to flesh out the story. Just come up with a short pitch to message me!

I will work with established lore but if you have lore documents that I will be required to learn it must be no more than 2 pages.

I must have the ability to make my own creative decisions regarding characters and dialogue while following within your lore or pitch. You are reaching out to me, a writer, for a reason. That being said I am willing to make revisions of the final script

I will write a 12 to 24 page comic script. From there we can decide if we want to continue our collaboration

I look forward to working with you so we can both get some more comics experience under our belts!
