*** Johannes ***

Johannes was a contested emperor / usurper who seized control of the West after Theodosius II neglected or refused to nominate a successor following the death of Honorius in 423. After Johannes allowed himself to be declared emperor, Theodosius elevated Valentinian III, deposing and executing Johannes after a brief struggle. Johannes' coins are tricky because his only AE coinage shares reverse types with Honorius, Valentinian III, and several other emperors of the period. Generally only a few letters of the title DN IOHANN - ES PF AVG are visible on any given coin. Johannes had a beard, but this is often worn flat, poorly struck, or simply never engraved in the first place.

Top row - These coins have enough visible legend to be 100% attributable to Johannes

1. Excellent portrait with full DN IOHANN visible. $85

2. Worn, good portrait with -ES PF AVG visible. $70

3. More worn & slightly porous, but still an attractive example with a clear -ES PF AVG visible. $60

Bottom row - These coins are a good portrait match to the above, but do not have enough legend visible for a firm attribution.

1. $10

2. $10

*** Arab-Byzantine coins ***

Struck by the later Rashidun and/or early Umayyad caliphs, imitating Byzantine coins of the period, mostly Heraclius & Sons, or Constans II.

43 - 48. $10 each

*** Standing Caliph coins ***

Struck by the Umayyad caliph 'abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, 693-697 only, as an intermediate step between shunning the Christian iconography of the Arab-Byzantine coins and when the Umayyads decided that depicting the human form *at all* was forbidden by their religion. Immensely common, immensely important coins.

49 - 59. $15 each

*** Umayyad fals ***

Various Umayyad or early Abbasid fals

60 - 64. $8 each

*** Later figural bronzes ***

Later Islamic caliphates were less strict about the prohibition of iconography and on rare occasions decided to place humans or animals on their coins. Coins mostly from Seljuk dynasty etc.

65 - 74 $10 each

This is very common with ancient coins in slabs due to the irregular edges and thickness of ancient struck flans. The slab itself is completely intact with no cracks, and the coin remains perfectly secure, protected, and fully guaranteed by NGC.* See video

Everything will ship USPS Priority SFRB for $10. Any added insurance or signature confirmation at cost. I will pack everything as I would want packed if I was the receiver (air bubbles/stuffing inside so nothing is moving or rattling, full tape around the sides). I will also personally hand each package off at the post office and provide pictures of package and tracking receipt. My responsibility ends once package is handed across the counter and scanned, but if there are any issues will assist in any way possible.

Any questions please let me know! Thank you for looking!
