Discussion ❓ "What's Cities: Skylines II like now?" megathread

"What's Cities: Skylines II like now?" 🤔

One of the most common questions on the subreddit is whether people should try or purchase Cities: Skylines II. This understandably leads to many duplicate posts discussing the game's current state, what has changed since launch, and whether or not it is "worth playing". Since last month's megathread, this same question was asked roughly once every 36 hours.

This megathread aims to gather resources, reviews, and recent first-hand player perspectives in one place. This way, whether you're curious about performance and gameplay features or simply want to hear opinions from others who have tried the game, you've got a straightforward resource that collates that information.

We want to encourage constructive and engaging conversation:

  • If you've been actively playing the game, we'd love for you to provide feedback about what you enjoy, what could be improved, or what you feel is still missing.
  • If you've dropped off, or are still waiting to pull the trigger, we'd love for you to explain what led you to step away from the game or what features are keeping you from getting started

As the goal is to provide helpful guidance for others considering the game - you should avoid leaving short, glib, or otherwise unhelpful responses. Remember that Reddit is community of individuals and those people have come here because they're looking for your help and guidance. If you'd prefer to "send a message to the devs" the best way to do that is drop a Steam Review if you already own the game, or keep your wallet in your pocket if you don't.

General FAQs

If you're after general information about or help with the game (e.g. features, minimum or recommended specs, the situation related to modding, when the game will release on consoles), check out our wiki articles below. They'll provide you a decent base level of knowledge and help you understand more about the features and limitations of the game.

Patches and Bug Fixes

As of the start of this month, there have been 35 patches for the game. These patches have included things like modding support, bikes, economy reworks, bug fixes, and new game modes. You can review the change log for each individual patch on the Paradox Wiki:

What's happening with custom assets?

Official (albeit beta) support for custom assets was added on 4 December 2025. At the moment, buildings, props, surfaces, trees and decals are supported and documented. Other asset types (like vehicles and networks) aren't officially supported, but some enterprising modders are brute-forcing their way towards an answer.

What have the devs been saying?

The main channel for "formal" communication from the developers comes via the Official Information & Announcements section on the Paradox Forums. We maintain an accompanying megathread for each post which captures a lot of player feedback and reactions to the news shared each week.

In December of 2025, it was announced that Colossal Order will be transferring development of the game to Iceflake Studios (an internal Paradox developer). Since this change was announced, Iceflake have introduced four patches and two hotfixes. According to the announcements, they will be responsible for all ongoing development of Cities: Skylines II, including the console version (although nothing has been shared about potential launch dates for this - so please don't ask).

The best way to catch up on past posts is to browse the Dev Diary and/or Announcement flairs and dip into the more recent ones. Unfortunately, these links may not work on Reddit's mobile apps (please tell Reddit if you'd like this fixed) but in the meantime you can go to the main page of the subreddit and use the "filter by flair" options provided.

Live Gameplay Videos

If you're interested in seeing how the game is playing today, you can check out recent videos or streams from YouTube and Twitch. These will show you the "real" game, not marketing videos, and let you spot how the game is performing in real-world scenarios.

Reviews

Although critic reviews aren't necessarily reflective of the current state of the game user reviews (especially recent ones) are helpful sources of information to help you decide whether or not to drop your cash on any new game, not just Cities: Skylines II.

Try Before you Buy

If you're still unsure, Cities: Skylines II is available on Microsoft Game Pass for PC, which is a subscription service at a much lower monthly cost than the full retail price of the game. Microsoft is currently offering an initial 14-day trial for as low as £1/$1/1€ (which renews at full price after the 14 days).

Refunds

If for any reason you can't make use of a discounted Game Pass for PC subscription (i.e. it may not be available in your region), you have the option of purchasing the game and refunding it within the store's refund window.

  • Steam: Request a refund within 14 days of purchase, as long as you haven't accrued more than 2 hours of total playtime
  • Microsoft Store: Request a refund within 14 days of purchase, as long as you haven't accrued "a significant amount of play time"

Recognising that you may not be able to reach the "late game" within 2 hours, you can use this 100k benchmarking city to establish whether or not you're comfortable with the performance on your system.

Specific Questions

If you've got specific questions about items not covered in these FAQs, feel free to ask them below. If you've been redirected to this post by a removal notice, please understand that this is done to help keep the subreddit tidy by providing a centralised and dedicated location for all information related to this topic.

These megathreads are scheduled to post at 00:01 on the first day of each month. If it's late in the month, you may want to wait for a new post to appear. Please send us a ModMail with any suggested improvements!

Discussion Cities Skylines 2's radio doesnt hit the same as CS1

Post image
47 Upvotes

thats my opinion anyway, after playing COUNTLESS hours of cities skylines 1 on the ps4 since i was a kid (2017) and 60s hours of cities skylines 2, i can safely say that cities skylines 1s radio is better than cs2s radio.

i think that mainly boils down to the type of music on the radio, and the adverts on those radios. firstly the songs. i think the songs are... fine in cs2. they do the job i guess, they "exist" and they are all instrumental music. in cities skylines 1 you had fantastic songs on Cities Radio, Gold FM, and my favourite, Synthetic Dawn! the songs with lyrics especially have stuck with my all these years, especially the songs specifically on Gold FM, and Synthetic Dawn. god those radios are peak!!! on the other hand, cities skylines 2 doesn’t have any songs with lyrics, at least in the base game, instrumental songs are fire dont get me wrong but that kind of song will have a way less likely chance of me searching it up on youtube when im not playing the game lol

also, the Commercials. in CS1 the commercials played between songs ever so often and i never felt like turning them off because they all were so varied and unique. i even today remember the "Yakisoba! it Literally means Fried Noodles" and "Why not take a Little Bite when you can take a Big Bite" adverts while listening to the ingame radio. Cities Skylines 2s commercials on the other hand are almost entirely made of jingles that may be funny to listen to at first, they get old really quick.

I'm back with a big update after a month! Mostly finalized the Neustadt district blocks & courtyards and -based on your feedback in previous post- updated cycle lanes to realistic reddish-brown, and did some texture rework in Altstadt (old town). You can find link to previous post in comments!

Discussion i really hate the trash system/ landfill system

i can never manage the trash system at all and i know that’s partly because my traffic and road systems aren’t the best but i just hate the way it works. the landfill has to be near the city because otherwise the trucks despawn and the trash doesn’t get picked up, but if it’s in the city then everyone complains about pollution and it makes the grass ugly. i hate the purple grass. i don’t know where to place them. i feel like quitting every city i build because i just always have a trash issue.

Discussion New CS1 DLCs Delayed

If you did not see the announcement within the last hour, the 2 new DLCs for CS1 scheduled for Oct. 28th release has been delayed due to technical issues. No new release date has been confirmed.

The good news: in a random response to a comment on their X feed, it was stated that CS2 for console is still in development.

Sharing a City Throwback Thursday: The San Fierro Bay Area I thought it would have become

This was before CS2's version of San Francisco but I have yet to do San Fierro in CS2 due to insufficient content. This San Fierro version I did was in CS1 and it included the famous Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge and a sneak peak at an earlier version of Night City (it wasn't very detailed at the time). At the time of creating the city, I was playing on a potato PC and didn't even try to redo (even finish) this map on my modern PC under a higher resolution because that time has come and gone.

Sharing a City Throwback Thursday: There will never be another Liberty City map like this ever again

Thumbnail

In GTA3, there was the old Liberty City with 3 districts. In GTA4, there were 4 districts and 3 islands. After all the modifications and additions, the map I created several years ago had 8 districts and 2 islands with assumed direct connections to Interstates 80 and 95. West Liberty was the eighth district I created, consisting of some industries, stadiums, major markets (even a shopping mall) and critical infrastructure. The population at the time did cap at over a million people. We may be years (if not decades) away from a remake of Liberty City in a GTA game, though it probably won't be like this because it could very well be extended.

Help & Support (PC) Best ways to merge arteries to highway

Can someone share any layouts and ideas on how to connect my arteries with the highway, except the cloverleaf?

Somehow placing roundabouts and cloverleafs on every exit in the middle of the city looks meh..

I expanded the city, adding more residential and commercial areas. I also expanded the rail system and constructed a second airport, which increased demand and traffic.

Sharing a City Update to my city

hey guys so i didn't have as much free time recently but i've tried to develop my city as much as posible. I really want your guys honest opinion about how it looks. I know it's not the most detailed but i'm not the most skilled builder and i don't want my pc to explode.

look from above (i do acknowledge my current zoning problem but they're caused by my city not having enough uneducated workers)
a look at the main city gate from a park perspective
a little unfinished castle avenue
unfinished royal gardens
a new housing area on the north
first look at the new church in the western part of old town
one of roads in old town (kinda reminds me of abbey road cover lmao)
market church infront of gardens

Discussion Traffic Flow Simulation

I would like to know whether, by approximately replicating a real town in the game, it is possible to use traffic density on the streets as a parameter, or whether the game’s traffic system is not representative enough to provide coherent results.

Sharing a City (WIP) Which parts should I "bomb"

So I'm trying something new: I started my new build with a medival theme, succeeding through the centuries in "circles". First baroque, then the german assets and lastly the 1920's Bauhaus style dutch brick buildings.

Well...

Mustache guy is here to bomb delete the shit out of the city to force surrender. The targets? Habour and the mine.

What else?

Afterwards I will rebuild those parts with brutalists building massive highways like in the good ol' fifties..

Modding WIP CS1 Reflections mod NO RESHADE

Thumbnail

Ever wanted building and water reflections on your mac? Or maybe installing reshade is too much and you want an in-game solution? This reflection mod adds reflections to water and to glass/metal/etc... It isnt screen space, so they can be inaccurate sometimes, but they make the game look really pretty. How smooth the reflection is will be determined by your water theme... you can change the texture using the theme mixer mod

Discussion I’ve never played CS1 normally. Should I change that for CS2

Thumbnail
gallery
11 Upvotes

My CS1 city was created with unlimited money, mildstones and resources. It’s been like that for every city I’ve created in CS1 I’ve never played the game with money or stuff being locked. I’ve always like just being able to hop on and create a city that I like with free will. And now that I have CS2 on PC with a ton of mods I’ve created my first city with unlimited money, resources, and everything unlocked it’s been fun being able to design and create a city to my liking without having to worry about money getting low. I can build till my heart’s content. As a first city I knew for a second one I could do way better. Sadly I’ve tried loading into my CS2 City and it keeps crashing so I think I must move on to create a new one. Even though I still wanted to create so much more for this one.

For a new city I don’t know if I want to do the same that I always do and create a city without any restrictions or problems. But I feel as I should give building a city with normal restrictions so I can play the game normally and have to deal with problems properly. The thing is doing it this way takes more time to build the city you want and I would have to first build a city that functions in order to make one that I want. As for using unlimited everything I can just build the city that I want. What should I do?
