AskChennai Wholesome: maid aunty no longer needs to work

We used to have a maid aunty working in our house for almost a decade. While she was working here, I always forced her to sit on the chair/sofa while drinking her tea but she was always too hesitant. Always sat down on the floor in the balcony. Then she had to stop working temporarily due to some health issues.
Recently she came home after almost a year, to invite us for her daughter’s wedding. Working as a house-help alone, she raised her 3 daughters, got them educated and is now getting them married one by one with all the “gifts” (read dowry) required in today’s marriage world. When she came in yesterday, she paused for a second and then sat on the sofa as she was talking about the wedding. She looks so happy, so relieved.

And I was so happy to finally see her treat herself as an equal. This is so wholesome, yes she need not work anymore. Hope her daughters will take good care of her ❤️
Just wanted to share this small but heartwarming moment

Books/Food/Hobby/Travel I turned my reading on Chennai's history into a small browser game, from the 1639 grant to the metro

Thumbnail madras.v40.in
• Upvotes

I've been reading about how Madras grew into Chennai and turned my notes into a tiny game called Madras Rush.

You start in 1640 on a masula boat off Fort St George, riding the surf. The trams arrive on 7 May 1895, buses take over after the last trams in 1953, and the metro opens in 2015. Along the way you catch 30 records, each a dated fact with its source.

A few of them:

  • 1856: the first train leaves Royapuram
  • 1914: the Emden shells the city (you jump the craters)
  • 1959: the LIC Building rises on Mount Road
  • 1996: Madras becomes Chennai
  • 2015: the first metro line opens

p.s: the research and game design are mine. The painted art, music and sound were made with AI tools, and I checked each scene against dated references so nothing appears before it existed. The code was written with an AI coding assistant.

It's a v1, built as a weekend hobby. Corrections on any date or place are welcome in the comments. I've also made a kolam film of Chennai's neighbourhoods and I'm slowly rebuilding Madras around 1700 as a 3D world. Both are on the same site.

Play: madras.v40.in/rush (desktop, or phone in landscape) Everything else: madras.v40.in

AskChennai What’s happening with the Chennai - Bangalore expressway?

Hi All,

Does anyone know what’s happening with the NE7 Chennai - Bangalore expressway?

I was travelling from Bangalore back to chennai and used a small portion of the expressway - around 70kms from Hoskote till Andhra border. Roads were like butter. 120kms an hour did feel like we were skating through butter.

After that, the roads were quite bad and the average speed just dropped big time. No toilet facilities. No charging facilities nothing along the whole NE7

How much progress is pending in the TN side?
When do you think they’ll open the whole stretch?

Rant I didn't expect starting a new chapter of my life to feel this stressful

• Upvotes

I'm getting married next month, and honestly, I thought I'd be feeling excited right now. Instead, I'm stressed out of my mind.

My fiancée, her mother, and I have been told to leave our current house by the end of this month. None of us has another place to go, and we're trying to figure everything out while dealing with the fact that our wedding is just around the corner.

The three of us manage financially by pooling our money and sharing expenses. It's not the conventional family setup people might expect, but it's what works for us. I work full-time and get home around 8 PM, my fiancée works from home, and we're just trying to build a life together. What's been getting to me isn't just the practical stress. It's the feeling that something as basic as having a place to call home can become so difficult when your circumstances don't fit what other people expect.

I understand that people have their own reasons and preferences. Nobody owes us anything, and I'm not saying landlords should be forced to accept every tenant. But it's still emotionally exhausting to deal with uncertainty when you're already trying to get your life together. I keep thinking about how different this period was supposed to feel. We should be talking about our wedding, making plans, and looking forward to the future. Instead, a huge part of my day is spent worrying about something I honestly never thought would become this stressful.

I know plenty of people have much bigger problems, and I'm not trying to make this sound like the end of the world. I just didn't realise how mentally draining it would be to have so much uncertainty around something as fundamental as a home. Maybe adulthood is partly about learning to deal with situations you never planned for. But right now, I'm finding that lesson particularly difficult. I wanted to share this because I wonder how many other people have gone through a period where several things in their life become uncertain all at once.

AskChennai Need recommendations for health and care worker visa immigration lawyer in London

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, especially those in London.

Does anyone know a good immigration lawyer who can help with filing a health and care worker visa application? I have already spoken to Aramm legal twice, but they have not been very responsive, although they were quick to charge for the hourly consultation.

I would really appreciate any recommendations for a reliable and responsive lawyer.

Sorry for posting in this sub, as I know this may not be directly related. I don't know many people here, so I thought it would be better to ask in these subs in case anyone has useful recommendations or experience.

Nandri makkale.

Non-Political News Heads up - Traffic on OMR

Was riding home from Thoraipakkam to Sholinganallur and I noticed that the traffic was heavier than usual for this time of the day. Many U turns have been blocked. Lots of police personnel and bystanders.

I can only assume that this fanfare is for the CM. Can anybody confirm?

AskChennai ACT Fibernet - Impossible to Change the plan (downgrade)

Anyone else facing this issue?

I felt the current plan was quite expensive, so I tried to downgrade to a lower plan. However, the app only allows me to upgrade the plan, with no option to downgrade.

I also tried several ways to reach ACT customer service, but every attempt ended with an AI chatbot and zero real agent support. 🤦‍♂️

Rant Who is enjoying the luxury?

This is the road condition on the sides of the Porur Junction flyover. A night before Modi's visit, they laid a new road on the flyover and near the porur metro station, painted the roads by blocking the traffic.

Okay, that is fine, but shouldn't they have done the same thing on the roads below the flyover?

So, a good smooth roads that are constructed with Tax money have to be enjoyed only by the Politicians and Ministers and not by the Tax payers?

Afterall, all the political parties are just the same and we are fools to believe we will see some change, but all we see is just the opposite.

Sigh...

AskChennai Stuck in a massive transit crunch tomorrow afternoon at Kilambakkam on a zero rupee budget

Sharing my Thursday afternoon (Oct 15) travel madness here in case a fellow commuter is heading the same way.

I have a confirmed Second Sitting window seat on the 16053 Tirupati Express leaving MGR Chennai Central at 2:40 PM tomorrow for my Tirumala trip. Right after booking it, my friend asked me to accompany her on the 1:00 PM MTC bus from Kalavakkam (OMR) to drop her off at Kilambakkam (KCBT), which puts me at Kilambakkam at 2:15 PM.

As a 17-year-old student with completely empty pockets and zero kaasu left after booking that train seat, cancelling or taking cabs is completely out of the picture.

The same train halts at Tiruvallur at 3:13 PM and Arakkonam at 3:38 PM. From Vandalur and Kilambakkam, the Outer Ring Road connects straight to Tiruvallur.

If a rider or driver happens to be cruising from the Kilambakkam or Vandalur side towards Tiruvallur on the ORR around 2:15 PM tomorrow and has space for a pillion with a small backpack to catch that 3:13 PM halt, that would be legendary.

Or if anyone is driving down towards Tirupati or Tirumala tomorrow afternoon with an extra seat in the car and wouldn't mind a student tagging along for company, my inbox is open.

Just a solo student trying to pull off an impossible mission tomorrow afternoon. Ping me if our routes match!

AskChennai Garba hopping and fun food hunt?

Hey guys! I'm looking for people to go to Garba with and explore some good food spots in Chennai.

A little about me: 25M, Gujarati, and somehow I've never actually done Garba. 😂 I've been living in Delhi for work and am back in Chennai for a short while. I've lost touch with most of my friends here, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to meet some new people, make plans, dance (or embarrass myself trying to), and grab some good food!

If anyone's planning to go for Garba or is up for making some plans, hit me up. Always down to meet fun, chill people!

Rant 29M — I feel like a refugee in my own hometown, and I'm tired of feeling this way

I'm 29, autistic, and living independently in Chennai, my own hometown. And honestly, I'm tired. I'm tired of feeling lonely, worrying about my future, struggling with anxiety, and trying to figure out what I'm supposed to do with my life.

The worst part is that I'm living in my own hometown, yet I don't feel like I belong here. This is supposed to be my home, a place where I should feel comfortable and settled. Instead, sometimes I feel like a refugee in my own city, just existing here without a real sense of belonging, security, or emotional support. I go about my everyday life, fulfil my responsibilities, and try to carry on, but inside, I feel stuck and exhausted.

My personal life is still unresolved.

Then there's my job situation. I'm a contractual employee, and I don't have the security of knowing what my future holds. I keep worrying about my employment, what happens if I lose my job, and how I'm supposed to manage financially. How am I supposed to build a stable life when even my livelihood feels uncertain? I want to move forward, but I feel like I'm constantly waiting for something to go wrong.

And being autistic makes many of these experiences harder to navigate. Social interactions can be exhausting. I overthink conversations, worry about how people perceive me, and sometimes struggle to explain what I'm feeling. Being misunderstood is painful, especially when I'm already trying so hard to manage my anxiety and fit into environments that don't always understand neurodivergence. I don't want every interaction to feel like something I have to analyse afterwards.

What frustrates me is that all these problems are happening together. It's not just my job, or my personal life, or loneliness. It's everything piling up at once. I have to think about earning a living, managing everyday responsibilities, trying to build relationships, dealing with anxiety, and navigating life as an autistic person. Sometimes I genuinely feel exhausted by the effort it takes just to keep everything going.

And this is my hometown. I'm not somewhere completely unfamiliar, trying to adjust to a new city. I am in the place I call home, yet I still feel like I have nowhere that truly feels like home emotionally. I can live here, work here, and go about my routine here, but that doesn't automatically mean I feel connected to the place or the people around me.

I'm frustrated that at 29, I'm still struggling with so many things that I wish were more settled by now. I want stability. I want companionship. I want to feel accepted as an autistic person. I want to stop worrying so much about my future and feel that my life is actually going somewhere.

I'm not writing this to ask anyone to fix my life or give me some generic advice about staying positive. I'm just fed up with carrying all these feelings around while trying to appear as though I'm managing everything.

I don't want to feel like a refugee in my own hometown anymore. I want to feel that I belong somewhere, that my life has some stability, and that I have something to look forward to. Right now, I'm struggling, and I needed to rant about it.
